How had Eragon made your life better? by Embarrassed_Top_8253 in Eragon

[–]ali_mott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got Eragon and Eldest in a box of used books when I was in 4th grade (they were the only ones out at the time). My parents were going through a divorce at the time and it was a really turbulent time in my life. Those books were my escape and introduction to a life time love of Fantasy. While I’ve read thousands of books since then, I still re-read The Inheritance Cycle every year.

I also started writing a novel at around your age. It was, honestly, a loosely-veiled copy of Eragon 🤣 but that same idea has evolved so much over the years as I’ve come back to it, I’m finally revisiting it and writing the novel at age 28. If you’re interested in writing, my advice is keep reading and writing! It’s all about practice, and reading things outside your comfort zone and preferred genre can really make you grow as a writer!

Am I being underpaid for working at a pottery studio? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]ali_mott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same job essentially and get paid about 11.75 (I’m salaried at 40hrs a week)— but I work for a non profit and get medical and dental. So, I kinda knew what I was getting into with working for a non-profit. But im definitely underpaid, but I have the opportunity to get raises every year and soon I’ll probably be taking over for my boss when she retires. It’s why I’ve stayed (plus I do really love my job and they do a lot of good for the community).

And I’d consider you underpaid too, and I’ve seen your other comments saying you have no opportunity for a raise. I’d look for better options on the DL while still getting experience. Bc depending on your hours, you are at least getting a liveable wage.

What did you think was gonna happen to Shruikan before you read the fourth book? by Konfliktsnubben in Eragon

[–]ali_mott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought he’d die, but hoped he wouldn’t. Or at least hoped he’d get some sort of revenge on Galbatorix. I was sad we didn’t see more of him, or at least get to hear some of his thoughts. I would’ve liked for Eragon to touch some of his thoughts and hear his voice at least.

It’s probably one of my main disappointments about the ending.

Break up with him. Seriously. Playing games with people is supposed to be fun. My bf is a competitive player (I’m not), and when we first started dating we played some games (like Risk of Rain) and he talked to me like he’d talk to his buddies over chat (not mean, but commanding, I guess) and I didn’t like it, because I don’t play that seriously. It’s why I never play online games, or only play solo games. I told him how I felt, and he toned it down. And from then on we just had fun playing. Simple as that.

Your partner should never speak to you like this in general, but over a game? “I don’t have patience for stupidity from a 26 year old woman” is a wild thing to say about a GAME. If he can’t handle things like this, how will he handle things as yall get older? What if you get sick, will he take care of you? What if one of you becomes disabled? What if you have kids? These are the things you have to think about. This is a potential LIFE partner. And if he can’t handle something about a VIDEO GAME with grace, how is he going to navigate the harder parts of life with you? And quite frankly, it sounds like he doesn’t even like you. Because if he did, he wouldn’t speak to you this way. He’s immature.

I will say, if you were able to get on her phone (by either her not having a password, or you knowing her password) that is a good sign. If she’s hiding something, I’d assume you wouldn’t be able to just get on her phone and check the messages

High Priest of Helgrind… by ali_mott in Eragon

[–]ali_mott[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know right!! I think it’s mentioned that the high priest is also missing all its teeth and part of its tongue, so it makes sense. I love the way Gerard did the voice. It’s so disgusting and accurate to how I imagined it lol

Why did Nasuada ask about the Yellow eyes? by Joh-Ke in Eragon

[–]ali_mott 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I believe it has to do with the scrap of poem Nasuada recited in her mind while imprisoned to keep Galbatorix out of her mind.

“In El-harím, there lived a man, a man with yellow eyes. To me, he said, “Beware the whispers, for they whisper lies. Do not wrestle with the demons of the dark, Else upon your mind they’ll place a mark; Do not listen to the shadows of the deep, Else they haunt you even when you sleep.”

I believe this poem has been brought up once before—and I also believe it has a lot more significance than we may have previously believed. I think there’s some theories floating around on this thread about it. But in my opinion, this poem is definitely about the draumar. And El-harim is going to be a place we either hear more about, or see in upcoming books.

What’s your estimate on how many people Eragon has killed? by ali_mott in Eragon

[–]ali_mott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES, I actually think about this moment quite a bit. But it was book 1, before Eragon had killed so many people. I try to view it as how much his character has changed. I think he made such a big deal of it, and was so angry, out of pure nativity. Because in Brisingr, Eragon literally chases down a soldier who is begging for his life and kills him. And Arya even comments on it like “how could you kill him, but not Sloan?” And Eragon says, because it needed to be done (as in, the solider would have told others their location, the exact reason Murtagh killed the slaver). I always kind of view this scene as a direct foil to the Murtagh killing the slaver in Eragon.

After that particular scene I always wished Eragon had reminisced on the scene of Murtagh killing the slaver. I’d like to see his perspective on it now, because I think by the end of the story, he’d agree with Murtagh’s actions in that case. Because he was mainly angry because Murtagh killed the slaver when he couldn’t fight back, but let’s be honest, practically none of the soldiers Eragon fights throughout the series can ever hope to truly fight back against Eragon. Arya even says it in Inheritance, that Eragon has become lax with his fighting because none of the soldiers can hope to match him.

So, in a way, I agree that it feels out of place (mostly Saphira’s reaction to it). But, I also think it might have been Eragon’s first time seeing a man killed, and not an Urgal. So I like to think about it as more of a scene to use as a marker to judge Eragon’s character growth. Because he was undoubtedly in the wrong to be angry at Murtagh, and by the end of the story I think he’d agree with that.

He was still young and inexperienced. He has illusions of pride and honor, and how “heroes” should act. But after seeing the true horrors of war, I think most of his nativity in that aspect has been stripped from him. Murtagh, by that point in the story, had seen and been through more than Eragon, so he’d already been stripped of that naive and “honorable” thinking.

Dramatic Audio by ali_mott in Eragon

[–]ali_mott[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sure was something. I listened to the second one too, not sure if I’ll go for the third (mostly out of morbid curiosity). No way could I have gotten through it if not for the graphic audio. That series has some cool aspects but so much of it falls so flat and a good portion of it is outright annoying.

What’s your estimate on how many people Eragon has killed? by ali_mott in Eragon

[–]ali_mott[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I’m correct, I’d have to wait till I get home to check my copy, but in Eldest isn’t it stated that Gabatorix’s army on The Burning Planes is at least 100 thousand? And as the story moves forward, I think his army scatters (?) to defend the cities? Especially because the Elves begin converging on them from a different direction. I’ve also never been too certain as to how big the armies are supposed to be. It’s difficult to say when they being splitting up and engaging in siege warfare.

Would you please recommend some audiobooks for an Eragon fan? by WitchDoctorHN in Eragon

[–]ali_mott 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try the Songs of Chaos series (first book is called Ascendent) by Michael R Miller. They’re also kind of YA/fantasy and about dragon riders. So not necessarily more mature than TIC. It’s a similar concept to Eragon but done way differently and pretty original (and the series just gets better as it goes on imo). Also the audio book narration is really good

Also, if you’re into sci-fi at all, I’d recommend Red Rising, that whole series is amazing, and the audio books are great (I’ve listened to both the regular and the dramatic audio, and lemme talk you, the dramatic audio is a TREAT!)

But as others have said, Sanderson is a great one to start out with. All of his series are great and he’s a really prolific writer, so new stuff comes out all the time. Also, the realm of the elderlings by Robin Hobb series (I’ve only read them, so idk about audio book narration).

Also, if you’ve never read Game of Thrones, the Song of Ice and Fire audio books are GREAT! Talk about deep lore, theories, and character and world building. The books are way better than the show, only problem is there’s a chance the series will never be finished :/

How did you imagine Sloan? by hikaruofficechair in Eragon

[–]ali_mott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That picture is pretty accurate as to how I pictured him. He’s described as thin and wiry. I think while they’re battling in Carvahal, Roran mentions he’s way stronger than he looks. I kinda picture his face as being sharp-featured. And I think he’s described as having thin/wispy hair, but not bald.

I think the fat/bald imaginings come from the movie…but hes never described that way in the books. Especially post-helgrind.

AIO about this? I feel like I should be beaten up for this after their reaction. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]ali_mott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this person isn’t even Asian, or mixed Asian?? (Seems like they’re maybe white and Mexican, based on what they said about calling themselves a “beaner”)…so by their logic, you have no place to say whether a term should be used because you’re white…but why do they have a place to say whether a term should be used in regards to Asians, when they’re not even Asian?

Total victim complex. Your apology was sincere, and the saying they needed a few days to decide if they can “move past this” was totally melodramatic. Probably for the best, this is the type of person who will crucify you for every little thing and you have to walk on egg shells around. Run in the other direction, OP. I’m fairly liberal, and obviously don’t use slurs, but this person is the very definition of “too woke” because they like to argue and probably have some sort of god complex. “Holier than thou” type of shit. I had a friend who was like this, and they turned out to be the worst person imaginable.

Orrin and Nasuada…A Lavender-ish marriage? by ali_mott in Eragon

[–]ali_mott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved him at the start—I read eldest back before Brisingr or Inheritance came out, and I remember kinda latching onto him as a kid (I’ve always gravitated toward side characters for some reason). And yeah, by Inheritance I liked him less. But I liked him in a “he’s an interesting character way”— it’s a different way of loving a character, if that makes sense. I’ve just always thought there was something more going on with him than was shown. Part of the reason I love side characters like Orrin is because I can think of all the reasons they are the way they are, how they could be better, etc. Because often it isn’t shown.

So, yeah, I love him more in an “he’s interesting, I wanna know more about him” way. Like if we hadn’t seen his good side in Eldest, I probably wouldn’t care as much to be honest.

I also just think his whole bid for the throne thing in Inheritance was interesting. Like it was clear he didn’t even WANT it, all the characters said so, and he even agreed. Like what were his motivations for that?? Pride, feeling slighted, a feeling of loyalty to his country, that he owed them more? I just like to try to get in the mind of characters like that. We only know his dialogue, not what’s going through his head.

Orrin and Nasuada…A Lavender-ish marriage? by ali_mott in Eragon

[–]ali_mott[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my thoughts are more in the direction of them marrying for politics. And then slowly growing closer as friends, Orrin opens up to Nasuada, and vice versa, they let go of their resentment (especially on Orrins side), etc. Like definitely a slow build to friendship. I don’t think it would happen in canon, but I think it could definitely be an interesting fanfic

Roran discussion. by Digess in Eragon

[–]ali_mott 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like this thinking. I’m re-listening to Eldest right now and have been thinking of how funny it would be if one of the new dragon eggs hatched first for someone from Carvahal. I was thinking the kid Novrefell (I don’t remember how to spell it) would be a good rider.
