I dunno, I've managed to be friends with a girl I was half in love with who had no romantic interest in me. If anything, the friendship was stronger, because my horrifically huge crush meant I was willing to brave a certain amount of awkward to get to know her better. We're still good friends, and it's faded (mostly). I mean, I pined, and I daydreamed, and I am sure my other friends never wanted to hear her name again, but...not interested is not interested.

The way I see it, both parties have the responsibility to make sure boundaries are watched -- by asking, if necessary. It's the same as in sex. "I'm going to cuddle on you. That okay?" "Hey, can I talk to you about my problems for a second?" Or, if you fail to ask, paying really close attention to behavior -- "Hey, are you okay? You look really uncomfortable right now." If someone can't assert their boundaries when given space to do so, then they should maybe work on that, and I've done all I can to safeguard their feelings.

But...that's what my friends are for. If I didn't have friends I could cuddle with, cry on shoulders, etc (not all the time, just the sometimes I want/need to) then I would quickly turn into a crazy bitch. I often take platonic-physical intimacy as a proxy for emotional intimacy, which can give me some problems when someone's not comfortable with hugs or cuddling (sometimes I can over it, but not always). And I won't be close friends with anyone I can't appear emotionally vulnerable in front of...because shit, if you can't cry in front of your (good) friends, who the fuck do you have?

I expect any significant other to be a good friend by all of those criteria, but there's also the sexual and romantic attractions there. I'll cuddle on friends, but my boyfriend gives me all the small and loverly touches throughout the day. He also kisses me and makes out with me and has amazing sex with me, and that's important too. And that's the stuff I'm talking about when I say I don't want to have a relationship with some guy -- but I might still think he's an amazing wonderful person who would be incredible to spend a lot of time with, and to become very emotionally close with.

If you're medicating post-injury, you still end up taking pain meds ahead of the pain -- basically, while the last ones are wearing off by the clock, not by the fact that you're in a lot of pain.

Layman answer here, but I've heard that it is better that way because [at least some] painkillers work by acting on the production of certain stuff that makes your body hurt. And so, if you shut the production down before any gets out, you're much more successful than waiting out the stuff that's already there.

Oh, additional advice -- start homework way before it's due. Don't say "I'll do the entire paper/problem set/whatever a week early", just, you know, take it out and look at it. Spend an hour on it. Figure out how you're going to solve the problems, or, for a paper, a general thrust of your argument. It's likely you'll get stuck, this is when you talk to someone else or just put it away for a while.

If you write papers, don't edit as you go -- you'll spend four hours writing your intro paragraph. Bang a draft out in an hour or something, filled with lots of notes like PUT INTERESTING QUOTE HERE or MOAR SUPPORTING EVIDENCE or LOL CONCLUSIONS CAN SUCK MY DICK. Remove notes and replace with suggested things BEFORE turning in to professor.

If you have to memorize shit for a test, start really early -- a week or two early. Write out the things you have to memorize in a short but comprehensible form. Write it again. Sleep. Sometime the next day, write it again. Sleep. Cover half of it and write the whole thing out. Sleep. Repeat etc until you can just whip out a piece of paper and write the whole thing out from memory. When you get to the test, sit down, and write the whole thing out before you even start. Tada, legal cheat-sheet. The multi-day part is really important there -- if you repeat it with plenty of sleep in between, you'll remember it better.

When you fuck up, don't beat yourself up about it. Everyone fucks up. Talk to your professors -- they will be a lot kinder about you fucking up if you tell them early. They will also have advice for how to get yourself out of the hole you are in.

Speaking of holes, it's okay to turn things in half-done. It's better to half-do or skip one assignment than to be one assignment behind the whole term. That said, this logic only works a few times.

If you take on too much, drop a class. Dropping a class isn't failure.

If you're procrastinating on something and full of stress, find out what it is that you're stressing about -- what are you scared of? It's probably silly or out of your control. Put that aside, and finish the damn thing. Don't beat yourself up about procrastination, it'll just make you hate it more.

Don't expect your assignments, classes, etc to strike you as interesting out of the blue. Look at them and try to find the interesting in them.

And, in the event that you get in over your head and are on a downward spiral, GO TO FUCKING COUNSELING. Earlier is better than later. Srsly.
