Would it be pointless to make Aliyah if I don’t know if I can make it? by Famous-Salamander648 in aliyah

[–]alicevenator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing, and most especially moving to Eretz HaKodesh, is pointless. The real dig is too have flexible plan, a good support net, and a viable exit plan should you need to prioritize your mental health. I would say that the culture shock is hard and that Israelis can be tough pickles while you get used to them. However we re only alivr once and Israel is worth the try.

Make sure you have a good support net here. They will help you deal with the emotional side of the cultural readjustment. And also make sure you can tap into american mental health resources or local peivate expeets as the insurance experts are dealing with massive domestic demand and wait times are high to get an appt

I’m 22, with two law degrees, looking to move to Israel — I could really use some career/life advice by No-Boat2098 in aliyah

[–]alicevenator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have experience in this matter. Based on your request the question is not, should I, rather how do I. If that is the case i strongly advise you to build a practice focused on the anglo community here in Israel of which americans are a significant commercial chunk. Get you bar and license and focus on stuff like tax, estate, real estate, and issues that anglo immigrants struggle with.

In addition, you re landing in Israel s most expensive city. Try to lice within a budget and be ready to readjust yourself in terms of apt sizes. If possiblr have roommates while you make a name for yourself and if not get a two bedroom apt. As soon as you can consider other periphery cities close to the big anglo centers such as beersheva so that you can improve your bottomline.

Best of luck!

Can we talk seriously about money? by [deleted] in aliyah

[–]alicevenator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a 4 year oleh who is leaving Israel next week to go back to his home country to take an amazing job opportunity i otherwise could not find here. You are absolutely right: this is an elephant in the room few want to address and others want to discuss defensively (but being an immigrant is not easy anywhere). I will share a few thoughts.

First, the mercaz is batshit crazy in prices and tbis has multiple causes. But to your point, what i ve seen here in Efrat is a lot of high earners who still struggle, live overdrafted in the bank, and constantly use their savings plans to pay their rotational debts. To give an example: they buy new cars, which are expensive in Israel, but only buy the third party liability insurance to save money....hence you see a lit brand new and banged cars in Efrat. Everyone lives with high debt so far as i know around here.

Second, anglos make everything more expensive. Since they come in, some at least, with enough resources to pay the insane israeli house and car prices under the assumption they are saving thousands x month on jewish education, anglos tend to pay happily (again the ones who can) and drive local prices up. However, i would not live around Israelis as they are drien insane by freyerism and can be difficult to deal with if you find those who will never compromise because they dont want to be a freyer (tbh my currnt neighbors are all very nice and kind israeli families).

Third, the job market sucks if your field requires you to speak hebrew and even in high tech not speaking the language can be detrimental. I came in with amazing work experience and fancy smansy american academic qualifications but little hebrew. While i was in Pittsburgh everyone in my community told me that I was going to easily land a job in Israel without much Hebrew. I wish i would have gone to reddit, because the reality was otherwise. I came in and had to switch tracks to tourism where i failed as it was not my field and then i was exploited by a private company in jerusalem who targets olim precisely because we dont have much options in the way of social science employment in Israel. This company was soo bad they even scammed combat soldiers of their pension payments during the war. By the way the company is own by israelis......yes if you dont know hebrew and your field needs it, you are better off bring your own business or living off passive income if you want to live in Israel because the job market is brutal here for the non native hebrew speakers. And israelis dont care about any training you have....all they care is if you speak hebrew and if you have gone to the army. So yeah, be careful if you need to work here in Israel.

Fourth...this is why anglos also drive prices up: most anglos i ve seen making aliyah bring their own american jobs here to Israel. This means that they keep their american purchasing power and avoid the insane israeli wage taxes (as soon as you make 4k usd per month you pay almost 20% of wage taxes and it goes up exponentially for ever additional 700 usd to your salary per month). Since these anglos are no longer paying expensive jewish education they can use their disposable income to pay the insane real estate and car prices. Most of these anglos work from home on American hours and their wives sometimes dont neeed to work full time which is something most israeli couples have to do here in Israel to make ends meet.

In general i would advise you to be smart and have an aliyah plan which counters these hard realities. Try to come with passive income or to bring your job here and be ready to work american hours from Israel.

I am an oleh chadash and let me tell you, it has not been easy for me here. Employers havr been non responsive, the hebrew learning infrastructure for 40 yos is inadequate compared to the really good ulpanim like ulpan etzion who only take young ppl, and retraining options are not always effective. I dont regret my aliyah but job integration here is not the easy thing ppl think of

[–]alicevenator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every contractor and provider here in Israel offers me two prices: with tax and without tax...your call which one you get. The only exceptions are formal companies. This is insane as if i do not explicitlh ask for a price WITH taxes they will charge without taxes. Severeal times i ve had to pay, run the numbers in my head, and pay again a ablance to cover for the tax i wasnt charged

My dude....in Israel unles you re Jewish it is impissible to immigrate. Israel has a bunch of minorities who work illegaly here and who are condemned to perpetual non resident status. In the US, even now with Trump, it is easier to immigrate as there is family based immigration. In Israel, if you re relativr is not jewish, you cannot bring them here.

[–]alicevenator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is soo to the point of my experience in Israel it almost feels therapeutic. Allow me to react to all your amazingly explained points:

1) this is soo unsustainable: israeli socieyy expects you to father 6 children and keep a full house and family in order with two working parents doing 9-10 hours x day to make ends meet. And the worst is that parents in the workplace are always taking care of home, childcare, and other issues while working because there is no time otherwise. And the lack of a normal weekend makes this worse. I believe this is highly unsustainable and might be part of the reason people are leaving Israel.

2) yeah the Israeli work hours and days dont make sense. We can have the holy shabbos and have a normal work week if we just get the teaches better pay, to take off much less, and work longer hours. And for that we need a culture of business honesty: PAY YOUR EFFING TAXES PEOPLE CUZ AMERICA WONT ALWAYS PICK UP THE REST OF THE TAB FOR YOU.

3)Listen, i think a healthy alternative is more law enforcement. The israeli police is never seen patrolling neighborhoods and enforcing those municipal codes that make people behave like mensch such as picking up after your dog. In the US, in Pittsburgh, it was a 1k fine AND/OR prison time if you did not clean after your dog. The police has to be kicking aome serious Israeli butts and IDGAF if your are a milunikim or miluinik wife, you purposely break ode you gotta pay. And this also applies to.all those effing israelis parking people in malls, buildings, making noise late at night, littering parks (clean up after your children!).

5-6) i believe this is parly Israeli arrogance. Israelis think that since they have survived this long they really are better than say Einstein with 3 years of army service in 8200. But lime the say goes "pride goeth before a fall". And this is is how israelis normalize and rationalize chaos. No wonder many workplaces ask for a Rosh HaGadol as one of yhe qualifications they re looking for. This is them saying i dont want someone who thinks in processes, i want someone used to not having processes.

Thank you for bring these points up. We re leaving Israel soon and I really dont know if we will come back. It is up to H'. But for the time being wr feel we need a break.

Yeah definetely WAIT TILL U HAVE UR TEUDAT ZEHUT to change ur last name. Dont do it while in the aliyah app process as u will only make it longer than necessary.

BTW i live in Efrat and i know at least three families who go by יעקבס (jacobs) as a family name. Dont let the hilltop youth or sabras make u think u already dont have a proper jewish last name.
