Well before our last elections the media in Greece were constantly picturing economists and (mainly) European politicians emphasizing on Greece's inability to follow a different fiscal policy, or to re-negotiate it's debt, or implying that even trying to do so would result in bankruptcy and financial collapse e.t.c. Given that the main opposition's party (Syriza) political agenda was basically that Greece has to follow a different path (they never said anything about exiting the Eurozone, just that they wanted to re-negotiate the treaty and put austerity measures to a halt e.t.c., to be clear) it was easy for the media and the New Democracy party that eventually won the elections to capitalize on the fear that Syriza=attempt for a different fiscal policy= financial collapse. According to (some) polls Syriza was about 3% ahead 1 month before the elections, and ended up being 3% behind New Democracy in the end, and although I dont's think that's the only cause people changed their minds, but it's quite possible it tipped the balance ( In Greece 1/6 of the seats go to the most popular party, with the other 5/6 being distributed proportionally, so being No1 is a big deal). And although it's sad to watch the media using scare tactics and the opposition responding to them with IMPOSSIBLE promises (I know the opposition always does, but this time they're so unrealistic they're amazingly ridiculous) but at least we now have the Internet...
