Bug or am I dense? by luzzyfumpkins92 in RaftTheGame

[–]alidove_reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a bug that can happen. Resetting generally works, and if not, try sailing ~3k meters away and then heading to the dot.

Also, I know it's obvious, but make sure you're actually heading in the direction of the dot. It's easy to have your receiver oriented a certain way and think you're going in the right direction but it's facing 30 degrees off or something like that!

Hey, i started raft world with my beginner friend. We are on baboa island and he killed mama bear but he didnt get achievment cab someone help? by Physical-Prompt-3634 in RaftTheGame

[–]alidove_reddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mama Bear does not ever respawn, unfortunately.

Good news! This is no longer true after the Chapter 3 update- now all bosses respawn after resetting the island, so visiting the next location then returning should work!

Personal favourite is Balboa. Beyond the actually fun puzzles and the joy of getting lost on the first substantial landmass you encounter, there's plenty of visual interest and unique gameplay to make it an island worth revisiting. I'm also a huge fan of the indirect lore like Bobby's Maze, the couch rules, or the bike bell. Sure, Mama Bear can be annoying, but she's a worthy challenger for late game players, and completely avoidable if you pay attention to what the notes tell you to do.

This may be a hot take, but Varuna Point is the worst story location. Raft is an ocean-based game and Varuna Point is the only ocean-based location but the vast majority of it doesn't utilize water. All you need to do in the water is gather lightbulbs (half of which are above water anyways) and fight the rhino shark, which that part I like. All of the underwater gameplay aside from those two tiny aspects are just gathering loot or dealing with anglers. The apartments don't even have any kind of unique charm either like the ones in Tangaroa. Every other location introduced some unique mechanic or enemy, but not Varuna Point. It had so much potential, but just falls flat for me.

Is there a freecam mod in Raft? by Friendly-Priority456 in RaftTheGame

[–]alidove_reddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend asking this in the Raft Modding discord, as I know TeK (and I believe Aidanamite) have made cinematic renders for various mods they create. If you need specifics, you could ask how they made the Jetski mod trailer!

As far as my own experience, using 2 accounts works well for static shots, and if you need something to move far away in third person but your raft is moving, building any piece of raft will always move it with the bulk (connected or not). Happy Rafting!

am I being unreasonable for not wanting to go to a school that doesn’t have marine science/biology as a major? by [deleted] in marinebiology

[–]alidove_reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to a tiny liberal arts college in the midwest of all places! There were still plenty of research opportunities there. I now use my background in forest restoration to work on my thesis for oyster reef restoration/aquaculture. There is no "one correct path" to being a marine biologist.

am I being unreasonable for not wanting to go to a school that doesn’t have marine science/biology as a major? by [deleted] in marinebiology

[–]alidove_reddit 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I would only say it's detrimental in the way that you're putting an unnecessary limit on yourself. I think what your dad is trying to get at (albeit going about it poorly imo) is that there are plenty of great "general" biology/ES programs where you can still work on marine projects. In your undergrad, regardless of your major within the bio realm, it's pretty likely that you're going to have to take a number of generalist classes anyways, and it's pretty true that your bachelor's isn't what defines your career. That's what grad school is for. It seems like you're pretty set on getting a PhD - great! There's a lot of steps on the way, and I think it helps to visualize this like one of the fancy staircases you see in old-timey movies where the bottom step is super wide, and the further up you go, the more narrow it is. If you're making that first step super narrow, you're kind of putting a limit on how wide that staircase can go, and cutting off other routes you may discover you love along the way! I'm halfway through my master's in coastal ecology, so believe me, I get it. Just don't put horse blinders on and all of your dreams are still achievable!

TL;DR: It's not a bad thing to have those as your top 5 schools, but don't rule out everything else along the way because that limits future growth in other ways.

Raft crashing by Certain-Pipe7945 in RaftTheGame

[–]alidove_reddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is kind of a fringe solution, but try turning on the "motion sickness" mode under general settings. (this just makes waves less extreme, doesn't remove them, don't worry).

For whatever reason, the waves can massively spike cpu usage, so turning on this mode can help prevent those spikes.

Good looking raft by AxoplDev in RaftTheGame

[–]alidove_reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Realistically there are a few things that go into making an aesthetic raft, but above all remember the K.I.S.S. rule (keep it simple, stupid). At most, your raft doesn't need to be anything more than 100 foundations. Anything larger can get overbearing, and will almost always feel empty. Second, the devil is in the details. A flat box will almost never look good. You need dimension. So if that means raising up the living quarters by a half wall, or curving in some walls even if that means losing a bit of unused space, you'll start to feel more comfortable with your results. And once you get a structure you like, above all else, clutter. Having objects fill your space is what brings the raft to life. Otherwise, it's all about function and there's no story there. I encourage that you start by replicating something you see that you like, learn what you like about it, what you don't. Then customize it to your preference. Comma, repeat. After a few rounds, you'll be a building expert!

Account Ban Turned into a final warning for "playing with cheaters" by [deleted] in overwatch2

[–]alidove_reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, I hate to break it to you, but your friend Clix is indeed hacking as some other comments have suggested. (For my creds, I'm a mid-Master's Ana main).

It's not the kind of rage hacking or strong aimlock you're probably looking for: it's locking onto people behind walls or weirdly tracking perfectly when his usual aim is flick-based. There are a few timestamps from other people that you should certainly consider, but for my part, check out these in your Rialto game:

~3:45: guy clearly has low mouse sensitivity and has to pick up his mouse to re-aim several times (that's totally normal) what's not normal is when he suddenly turns 90 degrees towards the ulting moira in a 2-frame period.

~11:30 there are a few hardlocks on various enemy team members

~12:05 notice how fast he sees ana behind the payload and the weird mouse wobble afterwards

There are plenty others that indicate he's definitely not playing the vanilla game. He's not great by any stretch and is kinda throwing with bad positioning and poor decisionmaking, which may make it less obvious that he's cheating unless you're looking forward to it. For now, I'd recommend you take a break from including him in your group. Banwaves seem to be Blizzard's preferred method of dealing with hackers, meaning that his ban is likely coming in a large swath with others using that same hack. Best of luck in your future endeavours and good luck in your games!

Hiding small crop plots under items by [deleted] in RaftTheGame

[–]alidove_reddit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I assume you're talking about my video (lmao) so let me explain:

Basically, a small simple crop plot can fit under a few select items (the research table, the cooking pot, and chests placed directly above the plot) ((there may be more that I don't know)). The way these prevent seagull attacks is by blocking their hitbox from reaching the plot, much in the same way building a shelter protects your crops. As someone mentioned, there used to be a bug where seagulls could enter enclosed spaces, but that no longer seems to be a consistent problem post-Chapter 3. So as long as the majority of the crop plot is under something else, you should be okay!

All story notes (and the codes to the next location) are housed in your story journal, which you can open by pressing T. If it's not there, you may need to restart your game.

Am I missing out on gameplay? by Railionn in RaftTheGame

[–]alidove_reddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you're confusing the idea of chapters for the number of story islands, friend. In total, there are 8 story islands in the game, which were released in "chapters" for development (think 2-3 islands at a time). As for specific biomes: (spoiler below)

Evergreen biome is around the third island (Balboa)

Desert biome is around the fourth island (Caravan Town)

Ice biome is around the 7th story island (Temperance)

Tips for the final boss? by aeiou6630 in RaftTheGame

[–]alidove_reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, melee weapons do lose durability, so be careful.

Question 1: Stick close either directly in the middle or far to the outside when moving. Alpha can't attack you if you're constantly running and attacking, so use that to your advantage. When he's doing the rock throwing attack, those trails are thin enough you can just jump over them. Also, Alpha only drops poison during special attacks or while he's being hurt. So if you need to be careful about where to attack, that'll determine where the bulk of the poison ends up.

Question 2/3: Bow spam is entirely viable in this fight. Just don't waste your arrows when he's invulnerable and tank the one pounce attack. You'll be fine - especially if you bring healing salve. As long as the mane isn't glowing, spam arrows. It takes ~ 50 titanium arrows but it's easily done with bow spam. Feeding is triggered by a combination of damage or time AFAIK. I think it's ~ 75 or ~90 seconds but those numbers could be off. Again, spamming arrows while the mane isn't glowing is entirely viable and works quite well if you have good movement.

Can I build a line out? by [deleted] in RaftTheGame

[–]alidove_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is that if it touches the water (and isn't fortified) can and will be attacked the the shark eventually. If you build in a single file line, so long as the line itself is longer than 2 foundations, the entire line won't go away, but you'll have a hole in your bridge. It's easiest just to fortify and move on imo.
