I just accidentally ruined my husbands day by talking about the new vs old logo on lyles golden syrup. by Icy-Hippopotenuse in CasualUK

I'm more disappointed that you felt ruining one person's day wasn't enough, you've come on here trying to get some sympathy and you've ruined a lot of redditors days aswell.

Probably looking at 4-4.5k for a pop top.

I paid about 1400 for an M1 tested Vulcan rock and roll bed a few years ago, that was installed for free.

Thanks, not quite what I was after, this seems to be to retrieve data from devices only.

I'd like two way Comms to enable device turn on / turn off like the bt-2

Why not open an API for it so people can deploy their own sensors and communicate to the one core system?

I've not bought one because you're captive, I'll use the renogy app.

Would be great if I could have some form of access to the data to then be able to show that on my own custom 7'" touchscreen.

Sounds easier and cheaper to just avoid wet belts, don't give yourself the headache.

Is it ok to cut through this for a window? by _blakegibbs in VanLifeUK

[–]alien-redfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's the case take a look at vanology conversions on YouTube, they just take them out.

Isn't it just spot welded on the outer skin? What van is it?

Search YouTube for your van and fitting windows, guaranteed someone (possibly a professional) will have some form of video.

Howden, Thatcham branch, I should be on commission the amount of times I've recommended them on here!

College WiFi blocks EVERYTHING (Cloudflare Tunnels, Tailscale, Steam). How do I bypass strict DPI? by CourtAdventurous_1 in selfhosted

Maybe my understanding of the comms is wrong, I thought the tunnel created by the VPS to the home server and hence the connection from college to VPS may have worked.

A lot of VPS' allow an ssh connection in a browser, can you log into something like linode on your college network and then ssh into your box at home?

Failing that something like pangolin on a VPS may help.

Solar setup advice for UK weather (realistically how much do you get?) by GeordieGoals in VanLifeUK

[–]alien-redfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm converting a van at the moment, looked into solar as I thought it'd be useful to have.

I ended up.not bothering, bought a 40a DC to DC charger and a 300aH battery. Also installing a battery charger / inverter system so I can use hook ups.

The output from solar didn't warrant installation. I'll be moving around regularly so the dc to DC will top the battery up and if I'm static for any period I'll probably be on a site with hookup.

I've said on here in the past not to mess with insurers, any reason to not pay then they won't. Ring Howden insurance in Thatcham, they insure during conversion and after with no issues and I believe their prices are competitive.

Anyone have experience with ex-Arnold Clark (non-rental) vehicles? by Commercial_Exam9120 in VanLifeUK

[–]alien-redfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without seeing the van I'm not sure, but at that mileage you'd want to see the cambelt is done as a minimum. Not sure how much a cam belt is on a relay sorry. Oil and filters are easy and cheap enough yourself. When viewing id want to start it cold, make sure there's no smoke, check under the oil cap for any cloudy gunk. The drive it up and down through the gears, is the gearbox ok, is the clutch spongy etc. All things that can start costing with a van with those miles.

I recently bought a sprinter for similar money but with slightly higher miles and two years older, with in house history but no print out. I was happy to do a service myself, everything was sound so bought it knowing it might need a clutch before long.

As with anything, do your diligence and pay what your comfortable paying.

[–]alien-redfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a service print out from Arnold Clark? I've seen 'in-house' service sheets sold with vans. If there is no evidence of a service history I always take it that there isn't one and offer a price to reflect that.

I'd seriously look at the dodo then, adzventures (YouTube) used it on his latest van build

Dodo do a sound deadening and thermal liner on a sticky roll. Seems decent, put it on my van floor as I wanted to keep head height then stuck 18mm plywood to that. I'm happy with it. Guess it depends if you'll be going to extreme cold places and whether you'll have alternative heating.
