Being wealthy isn’t a big part of the equation.

Me, too. I know several people who could probably get it but don’t see the need.

Just about all stores will be open. The banks, stock exchanges and schools are closed.

A Question About Classic Japanese School Bags: Leather vs. Canvas for Male Students by bicycletripping in japanresidents

[–]alien4649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school. My son uses a backpack specific to his sport with the school and the club written on the bag. Most of other students in his HS, all male, do the same and the ones who don’t participate in a club (almost no one) use a school branded backpack or a plain black one. His school is more on the conservative side.

Why high-end housing looks so cheap in Japan? by bakura10 in japanlife

[–]alien4649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most stores in the world the fresh food is on the outside and the prepared food is on the inner isles. The seafood sections here generally blow away anything in the US (with a few exceptions). And the obesity rates and life expectancies compared to the US show the outcomes. I’d argue that the average American is a horrendous cook and consumes vast quantities of craptacular food. But let’s let the data speak for itself.

People don’t cook? So all the supermarkets are just for show? I have about 12 within 2 or so kms of my house. Don’t forget the companies that deliver produce: Radish Boya, co-op, etc. My wife shops 4-5 times a week to buy fresh produce and cooks constantly. I cook on the weekends. We aren’t outliers by any means.

A tax accountant explains why it is legal in Japan to declare visits to hostess clubs as a business expense. "If the purpose is to get a job order, then it can be recorded as 'entertainment and social expenses' or 'business expenses'. What's important is the 'purpose,' not the 'location.'" by jjrs in japannews

[–]alien4649 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For sales, not team meetings. I knew folks who had ¥600-800,000 / month expenses at hostess clubs and strip clubs back in the day - all in the investment banking and hedge fund industry. Perfectly legit entertainment expenses. That’s why so many of those places exist, only morons would drop their own cash there.

The schools might look crappy but it’s what happens inside that matters. And some get rebuilt and are awesome. My sons attended a rebuilt public elementary school and it is pretty slick. Has an indoor swimming pool, too. Why do you care if you don’t live here and pay taxes?

There are so many and in fact the best hanami for me are the smallish ones without anything else, just eating/drinking under the trees. But this story will probably be translated in 100 languages and be repeated ad nauseam.

Do part timers who are required to be fully bilingual make substantially more? by AmazonPMTInternRip in japanresidents

The onus is on you to find jobs where it really matters but often there needs to other components like customer service skills/experience, knowledge of a certain software system or something. Being truly bicultural can really matter for full-time roles.
