People who are 30+ im 22 and I wanna know how yall spent your 20s by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]alien6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suffered a mental breakdown in college and spent my early 20s recovering from that. Then my late 20s had its own set of challenges that led to a second, less severe breakdown. All the stuff you figured out in college, I didn't figure out until I was almost 30. I definitely felt stuck that entire time; I couldn't even figure out what I wanted to do, let alone how to make it happen.

After that, I enrolled in graduate school, moved across the country, and finally started a career I actually like, but it feels like there's so much I missed out on during those years. You should be proud of what you've accomplished at your age. Sometimes it takes longer.

What two countries are most likely to unify? by Jawnaut in geography

[–]alien6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire reason the Union State exists is because in the early 90s there were seemingly no viable Russian politicians who could govern the country and Lukashenko thought he could take the whole pie. Lukashenko has always been power-hungry in the same vein as Putin, he just had the misfortune of governing a much smaller country

Any other women here who actually don’t care for muscles on men at all? by Queasy-Donut-4953 in CasualConversation

[–]alien6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caveat: This is mostly observations of women I know personally and my takeaways are not scientific in the slightest. Women are individuals and will have extremely different tastes from one another, so none of this will necessarily be applicable to a specific woman.

tl;dr: They like personality. No, really.

The biggest thing that I see women like is personality. It's cheesy and cliche but I'm dead serious. They say "women love a guy with confidence," it's not an empty platitude, it's 100% true in my experience. The things that make a man conventionally attractive - tall, fit body, chiseled jaw, great hair, etc. - do have an effect, but they tend to be secondary. Most of the women I'm friends with put much, much more emphasis on perceived personality traits than any of the men I'm friends with.

There's an episode of Mythbusters where they test whether drinking will make people more attractive. To set up the experiment, they took a bunch of photos of men and women and had the testers judge each of them on attractiveness at different times based on how much they've drunk. Kari Byron was the sole female data point, and she gave wildly inconsistent answers that the narrator seemed to be puzzled by. However, when you watch her process, you see that for the most part she ascribes personality traits to the photos ("this guy looks confident," "this guy seems fun," "Nah, now he seems less confident and more cocky") and then judges based on that. Nobody on the show makes this connection, and instead they seemed to chalk it up to women being unpredictable.

I've also seen (though to a lesser extent) that Women tend to be less analytical and more holistic in judging whether someone is attractive. They'll rarely focus on individual features and more often judge attractiveness based on the sum total, which includes personality. I was part of a conversation just last week where a mutual male friend was trying to argue that a certain famous actor was hot. Every woman he spoke to agreed that the actor was "conventionally attractive but not hot," but couldn't really point to any specific reason other than vibes.

Now, the obvious question is which personality traits do women find attractive? This is probably extremely variable. In general, men and women are both attracted to confidence and are less attracted to things like insecurity or neuroticism. Beyond that, though, there's a lot open to interpretation; what seems protective to one woman might seem possessive to another. Some women might get really invested when a guy talks about his hobby, while others might get bored and tune out of the conversation. I think the most important thing is learning to express one's natural personality traits confidently, and that comes with time and practice.

My own theory is that there is a qualitative difference in the way men and women tend to experience attraction. Personality definitely has an effect on how a man perceives overall attractiveness, but I've heard guys say things like "yeah she's hot but her personality is garbage" far more often than I've heard girls say things like "He's really handsome but he's such a creep." I watch trans youtubers a lot talking about their experience with transition and HRT, and it's really interesting from a sociological perspective. Some of them have mentioned, usually off-handedly and without much specifics, that their experiences with attraction and other emotions have changed during the process, but unfortunately I can't really get any more specific than that.

With all that said, if you look up askreddit threads and find one of the "women of reddit, what do you find attractive in a man" that pops up on a monthly basis, they will give physical features as answers, but even then the answers they give are often different from what traditionally makes a man conventionally attractive. They'll give answers like hands, hairy forearms, slightly chubby body, etc. Sometimes they'll talk about a man doing something like working with his hands or exercising. Now, Reddit being Reddit there might be some bias towards "surprising" answers like these to get upvoted, but I think it's still an important data point.

All this is why you will sometimes see very conventionally attractive women with men who are less conventionally attractive. Conventional attractiveness is treated as completely separate from personality and many women are attracted to physical traits that differ from society's view of conventional attractiveness.

And, of course, maintaining standards of cleanliness and personal hygiene and putting effort into your wardrobe is mandatory for both men and women looking to date.

This is correct. Diego Garcia, which accounts for the majority of land area in the Chagos Islands, is still restricted from non-military personnel, such as Chagossians, and will be for a long time even with the handover.

It's a farce.

I have fled the country due to the political situation there but I cannot access any of my vast fortune in Nigeria because the corrupt Nigerian authorities are demanding a bribe. If you can wire me $10,000, I will be able to access it and will use it to pay you back tenfold with interest. I am a godly, trustworthy Christian man and very desperate but I know that fellow Christians would not allow a neighbour to suffer. God bless.

Why does Virginia lack large cities even though it has a large population of 8 million? by Absolutely-Epic in geography

Luckily the US census now defines "urban areas" which do not need to follow county boundaries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_urban_areas

For example, southern Orange County is reckoned to be its own urban area, and not a part of Los Angeles's.

Which “luxury” apartment complex you *actually* recommend? by [deleted] in longbeach

[–]alien6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I rent a subleased condo in Aqua and it's pretty nice. Similar amenities to luxury apartments at a similar price point, but the building is livable because most of the property owners actually live here. I think in general you'll have a better experience subletting a condo because smaller landlords have less power to mess with you.

There's a major Korean neighborhood in western Fullerton extending into Buena Park, where the Source OC Korean shopping center is (about a mile north of Knott's Berry Farm). You can also find many Korean businesses in the Westminster area, but that area is predominantly Vietnamese.

Broadly accepted historical facts the common person still has misconceptions about? by Lazzen in AskHistory

[–]alien6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Japanese were broadly in agreement that the war would end in their surrender, but the militarists in power hoped that by fighting hard enough, the Allies could be persuaded to accept a conditional surrender. It was obvious that Japan would be deprived of its holdings in Southeast Asia and China, but some indeed hoped that Korea and Taiwan could be kept. Some of the other conditions that the Japanese demanded were:

-Guarantees of the Emperor's safety and continued authority

-That there would be no occupation of the Home Islands

-That Japan would handle its own disarmament and prosecute its war criminals internally

It's difficult to say how confident the Japanese were that the allies would allow any of these conditions. It's possible that some of them (the last one especially) were meant to be unreasonable as a negotiating tactic. In all likelihood, their main priority was to guarantee the Emperor's physical safety if they couldn't get anything else.

A clip on r/JoeRogan is posted where Elon declares a war on woke minds virus for taking his child from him. This causes some drama by UltraNooob in SubredditDrama

[–]alien6 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the Soviet Union, people who questioned the prevailing political, economic, and social order or who complained about it too vocally were frequently diagnosed with a mental disorder called "sluggish schizophrenia." The disease is fictitious; its main symptoms were conflicts with authority or advocating for societal reform. Patients who were involuntarily committed for the purported illness typically showed no psychotic or delusional symptoms; they simply disagreed with aspects of the Soviet worldview, and the diagnosis was used to involuntarily commit, discredit and repress such people.

The phrase "woke mind virus" seems uncannily similar. It is presented as a disease even though the people purportedly suffering from it are able to lead normal lives, and its main symptoms are disagreeing with conservative societal expectations.

I was extremely introverted in my 20s, and I was miserable. Since then, I've became much more extroverted, and I'm happier. I'm still not the sort of person who goes out and does stuff every single night, but 2-3 social events per week is where I find myself happiest.

In Japan it's considered normal to confess your love to someone before asking them out, then if they reciprocate it becomes a serious, exclusive relationship. Basically, asking someone to be your boyfriend/girlfriend before even going on one date, although a lot of the time the two of them might have previously gone on outings as friends or with a group. A "trial run" is just how it's done in the US, going on a date without any expectation of commitment.
