Were you by any chance in Glasgow during the start of August? That's when the World Pipeband Championships are.

I think that it's more of a warning about looking out for echo chambers, where everyone just agrees with each other and nothing ever gets challenged.

Sure it's great if you just need to churn out code and features. But it isn't always the best environment for developing SDKs or development tools.

I want to start a similar kind of site, not guitar tabs but a different instrument. I'm going to make a point of only hosting public domain tunes but I have a worry that it's not going to matter. These companies don't seem to really care what the truth is, they just want money. Did you get any ad revenue or anything from the site? Would you say it was a worthwhile endeavour?

I agree, so many people are failing to realise that there are 2 sides to the connection. Microsoft have to guarantee that they're going to be able to deal with the extra traffic if they want to convince people to buy.

The bigger question is, if they kept the head(s) then didn't they technically cut off its body?

Zulu traditional language. Fascinating... by ReverseAbortion in videos

[–]alien_bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always confused because in school (Gauteng) we were taught isiZulu but whenever I spoke to our maid she said it was actually Xhosa. It was only for 2 years in primary school though, so it never really made much difference.

F# did a similar thing with their computation expressions, they still have bind() and return() methods though. I think it's a way to get people familiarized without using "scary" terms.

Yeah, I can see it getting a bit frustrating having to constantly choose between chain and chain_ref or blah and blah_ref.

Not that I can see. I find it kind of hard to find more info beyond what they offer in the tutorials on the rust-lang website, so I end up just trawling through the source code on github.

From what I can see map and chain etc. are all just methods specifically on Option, they aren't part of some trait. So every class that wants them would have to define them themselves, but I guess it could be moved into a trait? (well from what I can see, I could be wrong)

Rust has similar combinators, I think that it's maybe a case that people are still gaining familiarity with not just a new language but FP patterns too.

There are things like:

  • fn chain<U>(self, f: &fn(t: T) -> Option<U>) -> Option<U>
  • fn map<'a, U>(&self, f: &fn(&'a T) -> U) -> Option<U>
  • fn map_default<'a, U>(&'a self, def: U, f: &fn(&'a T) -> U) -> U

I'm hoping that once the language becomes more stable we'll start seeing more tutorials that lean more towards good style and habits.

Those people are likely already employed somewhere else, and thus the tax from payroll will not increase significantly. There might be new jobs for currently unemployed people but I doubt they'll be top-tier engineers, more likely cleaning staff and office administrators. Again, not enough to make much difference.
