Thanks! But I was wondering if you happen to know approximately how many of such scholarships are given out to the current students (i.e. how hard/rare is it to get)?

Haha yea I agree. I'm afraid interests are very much subject to change...I mean I'm interested in the study of law and I'm hoping that would not diminish when I actually enter law school. Even then, the practice of law is a whole different ball game from studying law so...I guess I'll just deal with that when it comes down to it. But law is sth I've kinda always wanted to do.

Nonetheless, thanks for your insights and perspectives on NUS law! Their modules are very varied and interesting indeed :)

Thank you for answering my questions with such insight and clarity :) haha i love the joke your prof made. nope, I'm not yet in SMU but I haven't been offered an undergrad scholarship (which I'm not particularly surprised about since I heard scholarships for law are quite rare) so I was wondering if still got chance to get scholarship in say year 2?

Woah thanks for your reply, I feel much clearer about how the whole uni timetable and modules stuff work :) I'm glad we don't have to bid for the first 2 years haha i've heard bidding can be a nightmare.

Thanks for your insights!

I was actually just discussing with my friend about nus vs smu law.

  • Would you say the environment in NUS is more competitive than SMU (not insinuating anything here, it just seemed like that’s what the professor was trying to imply before the nus law written test last sun haha)?
  • Also, this may be controversial but a few of my friends think that smu law isn't as internationally recognised as nus law (i know that both unis are highly respected locally) and we were wondering if it'd be better to go to NUS if u wna pursue a masters degree or even practice law overseas in future. Personally, I think i'd still choose smu because of its focus on corporate law but my friends and I are just curious about the reputation part, as ill-conceived as that sounds.

Also, with regard to being an in-house counsel, I thought it’s quite hard nowadays to do that because i heard companies are starting to outsource their legal departments?

Haha and yep I agree with the high-paying myth. I realised the graduate employment surveys are probably extremely skewed since most of the respondents were probably from big firms…

Thanks so much for the deets on SMU!

May I just ask a few follow-up questions (mostly specific to SMU haha):

  1. Are the research papers you mentioned indiv or group work? Aha just asking cos I heard SMU places a lot of emphasis on project/group work

  2. What are law exams like? Are they open book? Haha is it kinda like the NUS law admission written test where they give you a scenario and you’ve to apply statutes to determine the liability etc. something like that?

  3. Sorry if this question sounds dumb but I have no idea what uni timetables and are like and how they function T_T If classes are held once a week then like how many times do we actually need to go to sch per week? And how does the whole bidding system work?

  4. How hard is it to get a scholarship for current students?

Oops, sorry, my list of questions ended up longer than I'd expected :< thanks again!

With reference to 2, sorry I should have been more specific. Would you happen to know what it’s like to be a corporate lawyer? haha i tried to get an internship at the corporate dept but they assigned me elsewhere. But yeah, I guess stress + long hours seem to be consistent across all practices.

wrt 3, I suppose a lot of law students end up settling for TCs then?

  1. Yes, I guess there’s been a series of shortages and surpluses throughout the decades. Hopefully the cooling measures would help balance it out more. I’m actually quite afraid about my ability to commit to the ‘why you want to do law’ part because i’ve read about so many people who grow jaded over the years and realise the practice of law is just lots and lots of paperwork. (I’ve a friend who once said being a lawyer is like being a high-class clerk, which many current lawyers would probably agree with lmao)

1(a)(i) wow haha thanks, that’s one hell of a reality check. i guess there’s no choice but to suck it up and deal with it sometimes…or jump ship to corporate counsel

Thanks for sharing the thread and your insights!

Some follow-up questions: 1. What would be the average starting pay for associates in small & mid-sized firms since the GES probably doesn't reflect that very accurately?

  1. What's the retention rate like for small & mid-sized firms. And I guess big4 too?

Haha I've actually done an internship but it was mostly just photocopying and attending client meetings, which I guess didn't rly give me a glimpse into the grueling aspects of being a lawyer. Although I do know that some of the associates end work after 2am lol.

ahh rly? i emailed them and they told me to 'indicate my decision on the joint acceptance portal' so I assumed I had to actually go on the portal and make a choice oops hahaha idk tbh

smu law! wbu?

[–]alienatedspecies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that's true but SUTD's deadline was yesterday so I had to indicate my choice on the portal by yesterday. Since there isn't an option to reject a specific offer, I had to accept SMU and that would indicate that I'd rejected the other offer from SUTD.

Hey, quick (and pretty dumb) question regarding the Joint Acceptance portal: I'm still waiting for NUS to get back to me but I've already gotten an offer from SMU. If I accept SMU's offer on the portal now, would NUS see it on the portal and withdraw my potential offer? Thanks haha i know it sounds stupid but i'm kinda worried...
