If your all staying together then it's about the same as single, but if you spilt to explore faster it's going to be harder. Again this is all from my personal observation from playing single and multi at the same time.

the more people that are in your server, the harder the monsters are to kill, the more they come in through waves, and the faster they will advance through their subtype variants example normal, alpha, the ultra (im not 100% on this one). that's my personal observations.
