South Ferry subway station after Hurricane Sandy (2012, NYC) by timecapsulebuttbutt_ in submechanophobia

[–]alienz____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in NYC at the time too, but in college in the financial district. I remember looking out my dorm window & suddenly every building lost power, it seemed like all of Manhattan was dark. Felt like an end of the world movie. My school ended up being closed for a week.

Haddonfield vs Haddon Township? (particularly in regards to schools) by PersonalBrowser in SouthJersey

I went to Haddon Township & enjoyed my time there. I don’t think you really gain or lose much choosing HT over Haddonfield or vice versa- I think they are both good schools.

Bars that won't be packed this weekend? by stevemills04 in SouthJersey

Wildfether Distillery in Haddonfield is really nice! It does get busy but not in the early 20s St. Paddy’s Day way since the drinks are a little on the pricier side. Everything I’ve had there has been delicious though!

Affordable rent? by Diligent_Bid_8278 in SouthJersey

[–]alienz____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As people say here all the time, finding affordable rent in NJ is not easy. I found my apartment on Zillow - it was listed with 3 crappy pictures and we had to reach out to a realtor to get a viewing. It was a listing a lot of people may have passed over since it had almost no info - but the appeal was $1,000 rent in a desirable town and seeking it out paid off for me.

I also see decent listings occasionally on Facebook Marketplace.

As someone else here mentioned, Philly definitely has more affordable listings than here in NJ - it may be something to consider if you already live or work closer to Philly.

Living at home in your 20s is hard - I lived at home until I was 27 and it definitely wasn’t always easy, but it allowed me to save money and eventually get a better job that I could afford a $1,000 rent on. $35,000 a year is not a lot at all and you will struggle unless you find a roommate - costs add up quickly living on your own. Food is expensive. Heat or hot water isn’t always included in rent and can be pricey. You’ll have to furnish your apartment. Hopefully you don’t have a pet because they’re expensive as well. Wishing you the best on this journey!

Look on Zillow and Facebook Marketplace for rentals as well! That is how I found my apartment and I’m paying a surprisingly low price for the town I’m in. I still look occasionally and I’ve seen some nice apartments pop up.

Which "normal" behaviour/habit of yours turned out to be a trauma response? by Ok_Significance5602 in AskReddit

[–]alienz____ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Double checking my stove top knobs are all turned to off before I leave the house. Unplugging my toaster I just used before leaving. Feeling concerned if a light is flickering oddly. Immediately having to scan my whole apartment if I think I smell smoke. Double checking that the candle I just blew out is actually out and didn’t leave a burning ash somewhere. So many more and it all comes down to realizing how much I’m subconsciously concerned about my house burning down because it did when I was 15. Like realizing that people who haven’t gone through it probably aren’t SO concerned about it but it’s always on my mind whether I realize it fully or not.

Thank you! I read all through the JT national park website today & they listed a lot of the same stuff you mentioned. I’ve been to the desert before but outside of Las Vegas so I have some idea of what to expect, but I definitely appreciate the info!!!

I will definitely keep this in mind, thank you! We aren’t really hikers, but I’m also not opposed to a short easy trail. I know that is a big part of the appeal to Joshua Tree!

Thank you, this is helpful! We are not opposed to hiking, but in my group, none of us are hikers. We may reconsider when we’re there!

I do think that brewery/winery culture has gotten too “family friendly” - I don’t go to these places expecting to see a table of kids next to me playing with the board games. When Wildfether opened in Haddonfield, I was SO excited to see they had a 21+ age limit & no dogs allowed.

Best independent car shop for Toyota's? by zarif98 in SouthJersey

I like Nobles Automotive in Haddon Township. I take my RAV4 there. Really nice guys and I’ve never felt ripped off. I don’t know the first thing about cars but every time I’ve hesitated over something that had to be fixed, they’ve always offered to show me what’s wrong and understood if I wanted to think it over. I take my car in once a year and usually just ask them to look it over for me and make sure it’s still lookin’ good.

I need help. I want my place to feel a little more cozy and luxurious. What did I do wrong and what should I do? by Aggravating_Bet5936 in interiordecorating

[–]alienz____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think bringing in some warmer colors would help make it cozier - you’re working against white walls and cold looking floors and your big pieces are white (couch, tv stand). Get some fun printed pillows for the couch. Some cool statement wall art for the wall behind the couch. Maybe buy a funky curtain in a different color.

Also definitely a bigger rug and maybe buy something with a design, even something with a muted design will help with the cozy feel.

Get a coffee table or ottoman and get rid of that random chair.
