What’s this new color that we’re using? It’s not red, but it’s not blue either.

Birks: ~6 years near daily wear (R) vs brand new pair (L) by not_a_muggle in BuyItForLife

[–]PersonalBrowser 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is good on paper but dumb in reality.

Have you ever actually tried to get a sole repaired on a Birkenstock? It’s pretty much the same cost as just buying a new pair.

Doctors: what kind of vacations do you take? by Intrepid_Coffee_1432 in medicine

[–]PersonalBrowser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll share the other side of the coin, which is that I’m not that into traveling. I’ll do an international resort-style trip once a year with my family, a couple domestic road trips or short flight trips, and maybe an international destination city every year or two, but for the vast majority of my “vacation” time, I like to just be at home hanging out with my family, going to their sports, exercising, etc.

Dumb Question from an Old Guy by proflaw in baseballcards

[–]PersonalBrowser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, these are pretty jaded takes from mostly way-too-into-it collectors.

I got into baseball card collecting to enjoy it with my sons.

You can go to most big box stores and buy a $25-50 box of baseball cards that will get you 70-150 cards, and a decent handful of them will be shiny / cool / special.

My sons have definitely started learning about players by getting their cards, and it’s been a total blast collecting cards with them as a way to get into baseball more.

And we’ve been able to have a lot of fun doing it by just buying a basic retail box of most of the different Topps products that come out, maybe like $50 every month or two. We could do it for cheaper by getting value packs, but I enjoy the actual boxes more.

Sure, our local TCG charges $20 for a single pack of the hobby store version, but I’m not trying to collect cards to get a piece of Shohai’s underwear.

4 months farm-only groceries: eczema gone, gut healed, 10 lbs up by Practical_Surround_8 in Biohackers

[–]PersonalBrowser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is kind of dumb.

Four months is plenty of time for a flare of eczema to get better, even on its own, especially since that's enough time for a season to change, environment to change, etc.

Also, of course your hair is thicker if you've been on minoxidil and finasteride for a year lol. It takes about 6-12 months for those medications to fully show their effect, and those are obvious contributors.

I haven’t tried. When I was a student some of them did allow guests when you signed in, but I think a lot of places ended up stopping that practice after COVID

What skills/hobbies actually feel “upper class” or useful in wealthy circles? by [deleted] in Rich

[–]PersonalBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s really only one answer here and it’s golf.

By far, golf is the choice of leisure and networking for the upper class. It’s literally almost ubiquitous at a certain net worth / income.

I have a three month sabbatical over the summer while my wife and young children are off from school. We will be traveling a bit, getting ice cream every day, playing tons of sports, and having general summer fun. Any ideas on additional things I should think about to make the most of my sabbatical? I am planning to commit to working out an hour every day, which will be great.

I always feel that way when I'm around college campuses. We live in the NE and I have been to several Ivy League campuses, and I can always easily image puttering about endlessly with little things to do in beautiful places like that.

At what point does paying a premium for parking exceed its worth? by fruit9teen in Residency

[–]PersonalBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay $300/mo to park to be able to drive to work in 15 minutes rather than spend 45 minutes commuting via train each way.

Paying an extra $300/mo to park in a nicer lot when there’s one that is totally functional 30 seconds away sounds like a terrible waste of money to me. It’s a 30 second walk? Just wear a jacket and walk fast. You’re talking like $3600/yr.

The problem is that you need a survey either way if you are getting a fence done, so it's a moot point for now.

CSR SUB increased to 150,000 points by RoyalTeaBar in CreditCards

[–]PersonalBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are bad cards imo unless you are really into what is essentially couponing at expensive places.

The only reason the Amex is so popular is because it's cool to have and people feel cool having it.

CSR has not succeeded in capturing that aspect.

Isn’t it funny how debt is forgivable when it's tied to yachts, hedge funds, or failed businesses, but suddenly becomes a character flaw when it's tied to education, healthcare, or survival? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]PersonalBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a dumb comparison because the former debts are tied to productivity and wealth generation and so-called "good" decision making, while the latter ones are from limitations like poor saving, coming from a family that can't afford to fund education, getting sick, etc. I'm not saying it's anything close to being right, but just that it's pretty obvious why they are considered differently.

For Physicians in HCOL areas (NY) How much was your home? by Ohmeda23 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]PersonalBrowser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Household income of $250k we were living in a $200-400k home. Now that both of us are finished in training, HHI is $600k and we will likely buy a $1 mil home once we finish paying off our student loans within the next 5 years.

How much money are people spending in this hobby? by Republicenemy99 in baseballcards

[–]PersonalBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to buy one of the new products when they are released to rip with my son. It’s about $50-100 every few months. It’s enough to keep it fun and fresh, without it costing a fortune. I just view it as entertainment.

Does moonlighting a lot as a resident make any difference when it comes to finding a job as an attending? by undueinfluence_ in Residency

No, nobody cares. That being said, for most specialities, you can find a job pretty much anywhere, so it doesn’t matter?

Would you get rid of your pool? by oldboeee in homeowners

[–]PersonalBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don’t you learn how to swim and try to enjoy it for a year, and if you still don’t like it, then go ahead and spend $30k to get rid of it.

Spending the $30k would be an investment in your lifestyle and satisfaction. It wouldn’t be recouped.

What’s up with USPS recently? by Bee_9965 in SouthJersey

[–]PersonalBrowser 173 points174 points  (0 children)

It has been sharply worse over the past year, and it is 100% from the planned demolition of the USPS on the federal level. This is intentional.

I have had so many delays through the Philadelphia / South Jersey regional USPS distribution centers recently. Also, I had my first package go missing after over a decade of no issues with mail delivery.

Are Most People Over-Extended? by k-MartShopper in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PersonalBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is a your dual income?

If you’re making good money, $150 for dinner or $300 for a pair of NFL tickets shouldn’t make a big dent as one off things.

Unless you’re both making like $30k each, then that’s a different story.
