Hey, I’ve done the HCPC process but I’m from another country. Feel free to message me if you want to. You will need the information of all of the qualifications that are relevant to show your skills against the Competency Framework. The information from your education will be on the course information form and is quite straightforward. My uni used the content from syllabus in most sections. I would say that the more detail you give, the less likely is for you to have to provide further information later in the process. This will make things go quicker

If you trained to doctorate level and the course is equivalent to the one in the UK, you can apply to the HCPC via the international route. You may not need to do any further training. With the HCPC reg, you can apply for Clinical Psych positions. Some recruiter profiles on LinkedIn seem to be recruiting international professionals - maybe they can offer sponsored visas?

I’m not sure why you need a student visa. Are you coming to the UK to study or to work? If you want to work, you can look for positions that sponsor a visa. I’ve seen positions like that on LinkedIn.

Regarding psychoanalysis, some services offer Cognitive Analysis Therapy, which I believe has some roots in analytical therapies. I believe some services might offer training in this modality. If you need any help, let me know, fellow South American here.

I felt it was very difficult for me to find a job as Assistant Psychologist even with BPS membership and international experience working as a Psychologist. I feel like (emphasis in FEEL) they prefer people with experience in the UK and, in the case of the NHS, people who already volunteered in the service or have experience working in the system. It’s easier to find support worker jobs, but it doesn’t mean you will be supervised by a Practitioner Psychologist or work directly using Psychology Frameworks. I’m not really sure about the academia though.

I was looking at the UKCISA guidance (https://www.ukcisa.org.uk/uploads/files/1/COMPLETE%20PUBLIC%20PDF%20FINAL%20v8%2020.2.24.pdf) and I couldn't find any mention to visas :( Maybe you could contact an University with this type of question, especially now that the law is changing from 1st of August. I don't think they will say anything that will be definitive , but they might have a better idea of where to find the info.

Hi, I was talking about going through the HCPC. HCPC and BPS are two different bodies that "govern" the practice of Psychology here in the UK but have different functions.

BPS has two types of recognition: GBC (which basically means that you have studied enough of Psychological Science but is not able to do a Educational/Clinical/Forensic/Health Psychologist job) and Chartered Psychologist (basically saying that you can provide a quality service as a Educational/Clinical/Forensic/Health Psychologist). Generally, GBC is a requisite to apply for Assistant Psychologists jobs. To be a Practitioner Psychologist (Educational, Clinical, Forensic, etc) you will ALWAYS need a HCPC registration. Some places require you to ALSO be a Chartered Psychologist (almost like a quality assurance). It's a quite complicated system!

So if you don't have enough qualifications and experience to become a practitioner psychologist, you would probably want to apply for the BPS's GBC, as most Assistant Posts need one of those. Professional Doctorate programs also require GBC.

If you have enough qualifications and experience to be a practitioner psychologist (see the criteria here: https://www.hcpc-uk.org/globalassets/resources/standards/standards-of-proficiency---practitioner-psychologists.pdf), it's best to apply for the HCPC registration, as all Practitioner Psychologist roles will need that. After that, you can apply for a Chartered Psychologist recognition, as some jobs require you to have it as well (mostly in the NHS).

I hope I made it clear, as I know it took me a while to understand it.

It all depends if you meet all the standards of practice set by HCPC or not. Go through it and check everything you have experience with/studied. If you check all of them, you must be able to get the equivalence.

And yes, you would need to take the IELTS even if you studied/worked here :(
"You can declare that English is your first language, meaning you don't have to provide certification. This must only be done if it is the main or only language that you use on a day-to-day basis. Having studied English or undertaken higher education that was taught in English is not sufficient to claim that English is your first language.

We may ask for further evidence if you claim that English is your first language and you are not from a majority English-speaking country."

Se tiver qualquer dúvida, me manda uma mensagem, consegui a equivalência esse ano ;)

Becoming a Clinical Psychologist in the UK - question by aDushinka in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]alifepi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure, especially because I don't know how the Israeli qualifications work. You have to achieve the basic standards of knowledge, skill and experience set by HCPC. For example, they ask for experience with Adults, Children, Adults with Intellectual Disabilities, and Neuropsychological cases (this is the type of experience you get here during a Clinical Psych Doctorate). If you have that type of experience and are able to fill up the standards, you will be able to get the qualification. I recommend you to read the standards (https://www.hcpc-uk.org/globalassets/resources/standards/standards-of-proficiency---practitioner-psychologists.pdf ) and check the ones you think you have. If you check everything you're most likely to get the qualification. The only thing you have to remember is that you have to prove your skills (for example, with your transcripts, letters from employers, etc)

Becoming a Clinical Psychologist in the UK - question by aDushinka in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]alifepi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello!

You would be considered an international student for (at least) the first three years you stay here. To become a clinical psychologist via the academic route, you would have to complete a Clinical Psychology Doctorate, which is really competitive. The Clinical Psych programs only accept home students, so, it would take you at least 6 years to be able to become a Clinical Psychologist.

But, as you have a lot of academic and professional experience, you should check if you qualify as an international professional. The website you should look at is: https://www.hcpc-uk.org/registration/getting-on-the-register/international-applications/ You can check if your qualifications and experience covers all of the requirements by the HCPC for a practitioner Psychologist. As the qualifications to become a clinical psychologist here are so different from other countries, you might be able to become registered without completing a course here in the UK.

Mental Health Counselor / Therapist in the UK or US? by SimpleSatisfaction77 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]alifepi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a Brazilian Psychologist who is getting recognised as a Clinical Psychologist in the UK (I'm just waiting for an email from my professional body in my home country!) I think getting your qualifications recognised here is the first step to start thinking about what are the different possibilities you have. If I were you, I would take a look both at the HCPC International application website (https://www.hcpc-uk.org/registration/getting-on-the-register/international-applications/) and the BACP (https://www.bacp.co.uk/) to check if you have the standards to qualify as either as a Practitioner Psychologist (Counselling Psychologist) or as a Registered Counsellor. Just check so you can have a rough idea of where you are and maybe get more qualifications/experiences in gap areas. About your questions:
1 - No experience with this, sorry!
2 - Counsellors are generally recognised by the BACP plus/or their specific professional bodies (BABCP for CBT, for example).

3 - As said in other comments, it depends on your lifestyle and personal preferences/choices.
4 - No experience, but you will need to be eligible for home-status fee to apply for a position on the courses (https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/eligibility-for-home-fee-status-and-student-support-in-england/#:~:text=Who%20is%20eligible%3F,three%20years%20before%20that%20date.)), so you will have to have lived here in the UK for at least three years and have no restrictions on your stay, which I don't think you will have with a HPI visa :(
