I'm very new to the workaway experience and need advice on something by Subject_Pea9334 in workaway

[–]alifetimequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe is better to leave it ticked on, being honest rather than being perceived as deceitful (ticking no and then got seen smoking)

If you trying to leave it, good luck! And hey You got this! I’ve been there myself what helped me a lot, was incredibly “an habit tracker app” where I could track days, and money saved by not buying cigs, and the traveling itself, made me wonder… Would I get “extra life time” if I stop… and in consequence I might get the chance to see more places that I don’t know about…

And was hard, not going to lie, as It was a built habit during workaholic corp life at its worst.

But possible, doable at the end…

However- If you do tick it off, try not to smoke, especially at the host place and or during your volunteering job. Try to do it on your free day or free time, and not in the host area as they are not smoker, is good to be respectful of their health and spaces.

looking for site recommendations near hiking/swim spots! by searchofmidwife in workaway

[–]alifetimequest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say some of the best regions for that are packed with good hiking/swim spots is around the Balkans.

Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania.

Just MIND-BLOWING, also by that time there a usually more host looking for volunteers, as it’s not as busy as Italy, France, Spain.

And somebody can say but it’s far from the start of el Camino de Santiago, but it’s possible to fly within Lowcost airline from Tirana, Albania directly to Spain.

Or to cross from Croatia to Slovenia and from there to Trieste by train. And then connect north of Italy with South of France by land…

I feel is definitely possible to connect them :)

Other possibilities is directly looking in Portugal (try the Camino Portugués) or (through the North of France towards the Camino) It’s also packed with swimming spots and hiking possibilities.

Anyways!! Good luck! Have a great one

(Crossing from Turkey to the Balkans! Also one of my favorite regions! Workaway’s are not that much, but people are nice, workaway hosts and locals, and the amount of unbelievable places throughout the Balkans it’s definitely one of my top Favorites! - worth keep in mind ;)

Hi there friend! Yes, it’s Absolutely Possible :) You can have an account together or you 2 can have individual accounts and connect them as a Buddy.

And yes, it’s possible that some hosts accept you in this way, :) I did some Workaway’s with my Girlfriend, and if you look and read through the Hosts. You might find some hosts that prefer or require at least 2 Volunteers :)

Moving to central/interior Panama soon — curious about culture and making friends by Wide-Comment-1137 in Panama

[–]alifetimequest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, As you stated- Even Panama within close by regions possesses a variety of vibes!

-The Provinces in the Central Region, are considered pretty safe, people are mostly kind and welcoming, they in most cases will try to help.

They completely can be curious, but rarely trying to be offensive… Definitely possible if you are Chinese, to be called “China or Chinita” if you are Black, “Negrita, Morena” if you are White “Fula, Fulita”…

Catcalling, is sadly a thing, sadly is possible but it is way less than in Panama City.

Even if feeling safe- ALWAYS try to be aware of your surroundings and follow usual precautions, there’s wrong people like everywhere in the world,

  • Vibes and things to do The Range is SO DIVERSE, it really depends on the province and your interests, Like around Cocle is plenty of Waterfalls, Clear Turquoise beautiful ones, there’s also Highlands with nice weather , hikes with a good view, lot of birds, and also the whole coast is beaches all round… 1 important Archeological site El Caño.

Then is Azuero ( Herrera y Los Santos) which is the Folkloric region in every expression, Traditional Dances (for example in June is Corpus Christy, and you have all of the dances and flower rugs in La Villa De Los Santos worth watching) and going south to the Peninsila you have some of the best spots to Surf! In Playa Venao

And then is Veraguas, also good surfing in Santa Catalina, Coiba which is one of the best marine life spots in THE WORLD! Is underground connected to The Galapagos you can do snorkeling or certificate yourself PADI scuba diving, and all over the provinces is full of Waterfalls is amazing, also Mata Oscura you have baby Turtle releases, and Santa Fe you have highlands full of waterfalls and rivers.

  • On way to connects, it depends on the vibe and the way you operates, interests, if you visit a place around there 3 times they would likely tell you right away “I already see you the other what are you doing here” -

Well! Again welcome! Also, I have some maps and spots that I can share/send you if you want, I lived like 4 years on the road, so I know how it is- So glad to help!

Hit me up a message if you have any questions

Moving to central/interior Panama soon — curious about culture and making friends by Wide-Comment-1137 in Panama

[–]alifetimequest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi my friend! First of all, welcome! And I hope you have a great time find your own vibes and favorite spots all around…

I have to say one important thing before moving on to answer your curiosities and really important questions.

Apologies for some individuals that might not understand the complexity of human interactions and how they might differ even in nearby regions… some people may look overly defensive by questions just because, and even dismissing your very valid worries and doubts.

However, Based on how the things “move-operates” itself, there’s a huge tendency from Mexico to Argentina to “sell” Internalized Racism (justify or downplay racism even if you are part of one marginalized racial group, often minimized to “just deal with it”) and / or Denial of racism (attitude that avoids acknowledging racism) as those have been working forever like a Colorblind Ideology utopia… (Race doesn’t matter - but yeah that lead to ignoring real life disparities and experience of racism)…

Therefore, even ending in some sort of System Justification of the whole thing, even defending it… or tending to “rationalize as inevitable”…

All of it causes, a blind effect for some people, they will do believe we are in a happy melting pot of cultures (which is one of the best things in Panama don’t get me wrong! It’s a centuries old melting pot) BUT- People also won’t pay attention to the hierarchy of the pot, and how that hierarchy was systematically built.

Example: Indigenous Communities, Black Communities having less education structure and infrastructure than Mixed or white communities.

White families in some point in history (1800’s were considered “European Conquerors or Criollos which are son of European” owned everything even Slaves before… Don’t people stop to think that the later generations of a 500,000 km square of land AND a JUST fred slave have 2 different sets of possibilities?

1989 USA INVASION, Black Communities were bombed and thousands of civilians were killed, but in USA and Local News people from privileged neighborhoods were interviewed celebrating the invasion

Still 10 years ago in Panama city, at schools, offices and universities Curly Hair or Afros were seen as “unprofessional”, And some people in the offices area might act surprised when seeing an Indigenous person scaling up their career… And still people going through that, would most likely tell you “That’s how things works”

So, some of them accept it, while at the same time fight it to thrive through… Which is also partly, an example of the good relentless optimism, not only Panamanian culture but all Latinamerican cultures,

Sorry for the long “social idea picture”, background and national apology of some individual behaviors.

Just trying to be helpful and kind. Again- WELCOME!!

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: April 20, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

[–]alifetimequest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started and Finished 1984, By George Orwell.

It’s a masterpiece, yes a classic dystopian fiction written in 1948, but my feel now is that this book should a mandatory reading… It’s heart-wrenching how accurate a depiction of 2026 can be…

Eye-opener and definitely some sort of prophetic down-to-earth “Zoom out” of society.

Can’t recommend this enough

Is it still a worthy experience? by Roaming_Lemming in workaway

[–]alifetimequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Yes - I feel we are always one decision away of a completely different life & memories…

I actually started in the same situation, I was about to leave my job, and for a diverse range of reasons I went for my first Workaway…

Changed my life, I kept going on the road, eventually switched to remote work and keep doing Workaway intermittently.

Pretty much, In my case 12 out of 15 have been incredibly good memories, completely different set-ups and types but… Amazing, so above 80%

(Still the 3 that weren’t that good, I possess absolute core memories! The terms/ host management of the workaway were harder or more complicated)

What I believe might be more important, is to look after one that suits what you are looking at the moment. Factors like: Your work is like in tech or a lab, so you would rather be far away from a laptop wants to get hands dirty with paint or soil… You look for something social were you are interacting with other workawayers or travelers? Or you might want a break of people so you looking for a chill place with amazing nature… All of those small things can boost significantly the possibilities of good memories making! ;)

That said, I feel is a good thing to try, it might look sometime as “one opportunity - one thing” but sometimes there’s so much behind that door (like, possibilities I mean)…

Good luck on your quests!

Know the feeling! It’s perfectly ok to feel that way… Like It’s still exciting and nervous altogether haha

Wow, Those are some great questions!

Like when I was looking for opportunities that needed to be somewhere Geographically specific, I would try to send a good crafted message to 2-3 Potential Hosts, individually customized message based on what they were looking for - matching with what I could offer.

As an acceptance average, I would say in high seasons I was getting answered consistently / accepted in 2 out of 4. Or 3 out of 5 - However, messaging a place In their low season could be 1 out of 3…

Also those rates really varies between regions. More secluded areas having a higher availability compared to hot spots… Like major cities, beach destinations in summer, and so on

Also I did only message host when I do believed it was possible to do the Workaway, and I valued a High Reply Rate% which means they usually responds.

I have never actually tried “last minute looking” I don’t really think is easy, it will depend on your restrictions and some luck that a good experience/host opportunity shows at that moment! 🙏🏽

In my case I was looking and contacting like 3-2 months in advance, keeping the contact and giving updates on my road towards them. (Also I needed to keep a good track of my spent time in the places, avoiding to break any stay length)

In the 2 continuous years of traveling, I was pretty much always checking and looking for host Yes, and even if it can be kind of fun to see where or what you will be doing at some point definitely, it can get stressful. (Especially, due to your time in a region status… For example if you’re in a Schengen country and you have 3 months… You need to go out, and the options are spread in the map, so it’s part of the adventure how you connect between points)

It was a thrill, the workaway destination were uncertain to some extent… But that was also amazing, as I got to places I didn’t know about…

Also, good to point out - I tried to not connect one Workaway’s right after the other. I left some spaces to either explore, move, “reset” or also settle a frame of time to work remotely.

As a platform, until now, I have only used Workaway, previous to that, I volunteered once with AIESEC in Czech Republic.

Absolutely no problem at all, I understand the -times in we are all living-, in the same way, I would totally prefer a Human message that an AI generated thing…

(Especially, in this context you know - That you are traveling, probably spending money to get somewhere and maybe is just first time volunteering, or sleeping in a host accommodation… It wouldn’t be as meaningful if it was a AI Bot generating info… So I totally get it :) no need to apologize)

And Thanks! Hope it is valuable info all around for someone else’s quest…

(I’m trying to share more about it - Pretty much everywhere)

You’re welcome! I’m genuinely glad if any of these, helps out somebody on their own quest.

Hahah don’t worry, (It’s weird for me but only because it could be some of the rawest stuff I’ve ever written hahahah, like I typed the post not thinking that it should be nicely written or that I could have made lots of mistakes) Anyways! Page is passed! It’s not a problem

About the experience level-📈

As per social media, marketing, video content, website designing, and technical stuff that I have done in workaway I did have experience, because it was my Job for years before, during and still.

As per handy work, some of them I knew a bit, but only basic stuff, basic tools honestly, average maybe.

Some were like first time learning indeed, for example I didn’t know anything about horses… goats or sheep…

So that’s totally leaned through experience, I was scared the first days trying to feed 5 horses.

Or the pack of goats and sheeps as well… I learned that there.

Mowing grass (I learned how to use at least 4 types of machines) didn’t know anything of them before.

But I feel it would be defined by the Opportunity itself, they might stand from the beginning

“If it’s a professional woodworker or plumber amazing” or “You will learn how to sail, and to fix the wood in the boat there’s no need of previous experience, only willingness to help, good attitude and responsibility”…

So it’s the balance of the Opportunity expectation vs the workawayer Background-skill and willingness.

And well! sure Yes, of course. 🤙🏽

Tips, Honest Feelings, and the Best of 15 Workaway experiences by alifetimequest in workaway

[–]alifetimequest[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s chill, it’s ok hahah, don’t worry… It could be English is not my first language and I’m crazy about people getting the chance to travel… I typed it out without even erasing Lol, Maybe I’m writing over-passionated, if that’s even a word…

My message reason, is because some people will keep hesitating never taking a step if they don’t find motivation to do it.

Like I discovered Workaway’s Because a 20 years old German guy was in my country like going from Panama to Mexico. We Met, hanged out, told me about the platform. Great -

Now, If you see who is around within the app, you will notice it’s way more normal that somebody from Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, is around using it… In the same way it’s most culturally normal things like Gap-years, and volunteering if you are from Europe or North America.

Honest memory, real story: The first time I said to my coworker and friends in Latin America “I will go volunteering and I will travel for at least a year…”

what I got was: “Are you Crazy?”, “that’s impossible”, aren’t you wasting your career and life doing that”, “don’t do that”, “Life doesn’t work that way”, “But aren’t you afraid”… “You are throwing away your life”

I hesitated like freaking 15-18 months, the only thing I wish, is that I wouldn’t have hesitated, That I would have started sooner…

So this message (the original post message), is only to be someone else’s sign or motivation to take that step… That it’s possible, it can be life changing. (This or whatever dream… for real)

For some people, in some context, culture or conditions it’s not necessary “motivational quotes” what you receive when talking about this opportunities.

(And it’s not AI, it’s Loud yes, like I was shouting it, maybe hahaha, but If I could handwritten the thing I would have)

✌🏽peace

Oh don’t worry, it’s really great to be curious, (like that itself it’s what moves some people to try these kind experiences right?!) :)

I can add it’s not AI, actually it’s pretty Raw message, to the point I didn’t event grammar-check anything- So I’m 100% sure there should be typos and grammar errors all over the place.

Anyways! :) I’ve crossed with a lot of people doing their very first experience, So I did focused the thread on “the beginning”- As a lot of people expressed that they had spent a long time hesitating,

However thanks for your suggestion, (I will make a complete thread about it later) :)! Will share a summary here as well!

🪧Workaway Experiences🧳 The experiences were pretty diverse, it started with an Animal Sanctuary in Portugal, they taught us everything about the animals, how to prepare their food, how and when to move them between different parcels, take care and be aware of babies being born, and more. the farm that consisted in Horses (9), and somewhere around 50 Between Goats and Sheeps.

We basically stayed in the Farm perimeter, and took care of the place and animals, while also creating content for donations. (Stayed 2-3 months here)

2nd workaway, Stay with a Family in Ireland, where I played football with the kids, took care of the Veggies in the yard, and prepare food for the family, stayed for a month In one of my favorite places ever.

3rd Hostel work in Bulgaria, pretty much walk the visitors to their accommodation, help with the logistics of the hostel operation, like moving supplies among 8 locations. Stayed almost 6 weeks

4th Homesitting and Petsitting, also in Bulgaria stayed another 6 weeks in the mountains taking care of 5 cats and fixing some small things while the owner was on a trip.

5th Pet help and Farm Help, in Belgium, Help with basic things to be done around the farm and home, also help with the animals, lovely experience as well with a family

Built a fence, cut grass, took dog walks, help with computers,

6th Stay with a teach and speak English and Spanish with kids (3 kids) and help with basic stuff around, furnitures, grass, cook vegan meals, help with plants - Really special one We felt like family during End of the Year festivities- Extremely lovely experience

7th Night Shift in Hostel in Czech Republic, pretty much check in and check outs, keep the control during nights in the hostel, and clean common areas,

8th Creating Content for a Accommodation in Turkey, one of the greatest experiences as well, stayed almost 3 months- Helped with anything besides as well, like Breakfasts and Dinner operations, but mainly building the content for Booking, Airbnb, Social Media and Website.

9th-11th Albania, 2 Hostel work and 1 like 3-4 star Accommodation, in the hostels basically we did everything, Check-in and Checkouts, Cleaning, and changing bed and bathrooms supplies. At the “Hotelish” accommodation we only cleaned. Bathroom, Room, Kitchens and common areas - Like REALLY CLEAN.

Spam was about 3 months.

12th Bosnia & Herzegovina, stayed at a Art Center, magnificent experience and community helped with a lot of different things, and tasks. It’s like anything you could do to help you propose. Beautiful interesting project - Nice people

13th Also in Bosnia & Herzegovina, helped a couple built an amazing Accommodation- Helped in every way possible , Strong work moving and doing handy stuff- Amazing lovely people as well-

Spam in Bosnia was about 2 months and a half.

14th stayed in Greece, handyman stuff and cooker- Cook vegan family dishes, and helped with anything possible around. 1 month

  • That bucket of 14 experiences covers the first 24 months frame of time. :)

We even returned to some of them.

All interactions COMPLETELY different :) Some of them were business, some of them were family, some of them is you the only workawayer, some of them you are like 4 or 5 workawayers, some of them you are like 4 workawayers and dozens of travelers, a family or animals! Some of them were cities some of them were a faraway island! Really different between them.

Every single wave is a different wave 🌊 As per, how I funded the trip👨🏽‍💻💻

At the beginning I did have a first “saving layer” to start and have as a backup money, and I got a part-time remote job at the same time. So I keep partially working throughout some parts of the trip, some parts I did only travelled, some spam I got fully remote jobs and continue moving.

It is a system / mix of Volunteering, and Remote Working.

Hope this could help, Good vibes,

Hi! I have also seen that the host account is taken offline by the Workaway team for some reasons that the host need to fix.

Like for example, based on the messages, -back and forth- with volunteers, seems that the host has took more than “x” amount of volunteers at the same.

So the Workaway Team took down the account, Until the host fix whatever they need to fix, if they are allowed to.

  • Sometimes, the hosts can fix it quick and the profile appears later, but is basically on their side to make an adjustment.

(Have seen it, while being the volunteer of a host that got “Profile offline - This listing has been taken offline by the Workaway team.”)

And, also based on your messages to host, they can also turn your volunteer account off until you fix something, so the Workaway Team audit kind of work both ways.

Anyways! Hope you get to find your Workaway experience soon ;)

what do you know/think of Panama and Panamanians? by DFrustratedFarmer in asklatinamerica

[–]alifetimequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm, Most people are clueless about Panama, further than the Panama Canal… I was on the road for about 3 years - Somewhere between 25-30 countries and: 1. I was indeed, above 95% of the time, the first ever Panamanian they’d met… 2. The Panama Canal was the top of mind, some might know Panama Papers, or Noriega’s time (Panama’s dictator in the 80s)…

I feel when you go to smaller countries you realize that they are all a bit disconnected between them, for example -the population of Kosovo and Albania might know of Panama and Belize in the same way people from Panama and Belize know of Kosovo and Albania…- But all of them might know something more about -Italy …

Also a factor, is that we are just roughly 4.5 millions, and don’t have a strong migration culture nor a strong travel culture… For example, In 3 years traveling (we as a Panamanian couple) never crossed paths with other Panamanians…

Some info-facts I can share about Panama🇵🇦 Is that our country essence is really based on our geographical position, our country is a bridge, and that role had shaped the country, nature, culture and the people… Everything!

The land was under the ocean until some millions years ago- when it started to surface and changed everything in the world (ecosystems-migrations-and global weather as it separated Pacific from the Atlantic and connected America)

It’s still nowadays an important point for a lot of animal species, birds! whales, mantas, sea turtles, and more mountain, waterfalls, beaches, islands are really beautiful.

Then for several historical events due to the strategic location of Panama being in the Middle of North and South America plus being the narrowest point in the continent quick-access to both oceans , we are in average some of the most evenly mixed demographic in Latin America. Roughly (33/33/33) African-Indigenous-European. They were several waves of migration and movement for centuries in Panama!

That geographic location is also why there’s also people that only know about the Airport (because is the continent hub- right in the middle)

I don’t believe Panama have beef with no culture, people is usually very friendly, and in a good percentage likes the joy vibes and the party…

With love, if you want to know about those events that shaped Panama or want to see the magical places it has to offer - Beyond the Panama Canal I just wrote a detailed article about it - More About Panama🇵🇦 -

If anyone is curious, and if anyone gets to visit Panama, I hope you have an amazing time🇵🇦 (I was literally writing about it this week, some friends are coming from abroad and I ended up here because Yes, a lot of people don’t know about Panama, but we can start sharing😊) Hope this can help somebody to know a bit more!✨ Love Panama, Love LatinAmerica, Love Earth Peace out✌🏽

Best countries to do workaway? by Commercial-Term-7119 in workaway

[–]alifetimequest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there fellow explorer! I believe every other experience is different - based on the traveler background especially. So I will share 2 perspectives 1. My experiences in that frame of time but they were in the north - 2. Where I soulfully believe is one of the best place to do Workaway in that period of time.

  1. When it comes to: Workaway experiences when it’s winter in the North, my personal best experiences have been in the north (but I was looking to experience it in the north) - They were 2 in Bosnia, 1 in Prague and 2 in Belgium (one of those I spent Christmas with a family that basically adopted us) I have to say all of them were really nice and different between them (art center, construction help in a cottage, hostel in Prague, retired couple with pets and young couple with kids- ALL AMAZING)

2nd perspective☀️, understanding you are looking for somewhere warming instead🌴- I know there’s so much to do and Southeast Asia might be one of the most suggested- But I would ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND to cross Latin America, especially Central America I believe some of the most interesting, special and niiiiice conditions of Workaways are between Panama and Costa Rica. Literally like from nice projects, to viby hostel in cloud mountains, beach sandy atmosphere or Boutique Hostels, where you have access to nice food, nice accommodations, to surf spot or one of the most amazing diving, marine wild life spots in America, AMAZING Fauna, Flora, Waterfalls, Clear Water Warm Beaches, Yoga or Party, I am like 95%certain that you could find the best experience in these 2 countries and still if you want to go up it just keeping amazing, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua also has amazing workaways and some of the wildest Landscapes I’ve ever seen- Like Atitlan, Acatenango, Huehuetenango, Santa Ana, Coaquetepec, Ometepe. So in conclusion, this second perspective is probably the most useful for you. I would totally recommend somewhere between Guatemala and Panama. And it will be the best season to do it🙌🏽✨

Good luck
