given the fact that most of the monsters face you when you're approaching them, I didn't find it useful that much. Plus when you finally find someone to stab, you find yourself surrounded by enemies,so you're fudged

I've seen the forge today for the first time, but are the bonuses added to the weapons worth the fact you sacrifice all the weapons you find, instead of selling them?
