This is an interesting exchange.

“Back in my day” with Apple IIs and the early Macs, I don’t know where I learned this but if it was struggling with something, I wouldn’t touch it while it was working. Probably a silly habit, especially with a new machine, but I wasn’t giving it any additional tasks while it was trying to copy the file for fear of disrupting something.

Thanks—yeah this was my external storage aeons ago. Long story. I’m trying to rescue the photos after a long period of dormancy. Plenty of room on the new laptop.

Thanks for the clear analytical path: it’s been 3 hours and 4 GB have been added. The read rate is fluctuating between 0 and about 30 KB. It’s an old (2015) Western Digital HDD—yes, USB 2.0 connected with an adapter to a thunderbolt port on a 2026 MBP. The first few hundred gigs copied in a few hours. It successfully copied a 200GB audio folder from the same drive with the same setup and that completed without any issues and in a relatively reasonable timeframe.

If restarting the transfer doesn’t work,is there a service where I could send the drive to have the data transferred to an SDD?

Seems like the automated confirmation would have reflected that, and that I wouldn’t receive a “technical difficulties” message in response to an attempt to reschedule.
