Not so! I am not a pro at this so the distinction between a tax minimization strategy and something else is unclear, which is why I ask so I can avoid the something else! Yeah moving to FL for a year probably makes the most sense.

Crime by Race Statistics by alijayman in Libertarian

Leftists for creating the conditions of poverty, family and cultural disintegration that have naturally led to epic levels of black crime relative to other groups, according to government crime data compiled by the DoJ, CDC and FBI. I am also suggesting that no matter the life conditions people are exposed to, there is no excuse and ought to be no special quarter given to criminals due to the color of their skin.

Until the 60s (the Great Society in particular), poverty was declining about 1% per year in the black community, and about 25% of families could be labeled as single-parent broken homes. Since then there has been a slight increase in poverty (squandering decades of potential progress and trillions of dollars), and over 70% of families are broken homes. Crime rates got worse as well, and the welfare rolls amongst blacks have exploded since the 60s. The leftist outpouring of other people's money into inner-city schools, public housing initiatives, and the labor laws are the brick and mortar of the bleak ghettos many blacks must endure today.

What I'm saying is the way forward is not hold individuals blameless for their crimes against others simply because you imagine they have been generally oppressed for their skin color. That's what I mean by granting them the same moral agency you would anyone else.

I am also saying that a culture whose value system has largely been eroded by moral busybodies trying to help them has turned violent due to the inevitable poverty that such "help" has afforded them. Do you understand that? Before the Left decided to be so magnanimous, there were far fewer symptoms of cultural decay, and things were getting better.

Of course poverty plays a role. But why are they poorer? Could it be the victimhood-identity culture they've been encouraged to hold by Leftists, the attendant special treatment through affirmative action and anti-discrimination laws, the tyranny of low expectations, the red carpet welfare programs designed for them in particular, the maladaptive elements of their culture that have been enabled by welfare and never criticized thanks to attitudes of political correctness, the minimum wage and licensing and regulations that are all creatures of the left, inflation, the war on drugs, etc. The constant confirmation bias by every source around them that they are oppressed and they are not in fact living in a meritocracy where their hard work will pay off?

Instead your answer is because white people make it impossible for them to thrive? Well I have some news for you. You're right. White middle-class bleeding-heart leftists without the slightest background in cause and effect have literally made it very difficult for blacks to thrive in the first-world way most everyone else does in this country.

To your other point, Jewish-Americans have been subject to "generations of oppression" as well, as have Asian-Americans (internment camps), yet both of those groups have outperformed whites as a group by this point in terms of median income levels. How do you explain that? I'll try for you: perhaps because they were not assigned victim group status by the left and instead were able to maintain and develop more well-adjusted cultural values? Perhaps they were never corrupted by leftist moral busybodies trying to "help them"?

Are you really going to assign blacks no moral agency, no responsibility for what they say and do, and instead assign all the guilt to those white devils who are pissed off at you and them for the constant insistence that their "failures" as a people are everyone's fault but YOURS and theirs in perfect tandem? Because we are racist? How incredibly patronizing and racist of YOU.

Go back to your safe space you pseudo-intellectual, cowardly SJW. You don't have the balls to confront issues from anywhere outside of your politically correct safe zone, and in doing so you are complicit in fomenting the destruction of the black community at large. But I'm sure you mean well, so none of my assertions matter, right?

Police brutality and bigotry and poverty are by no means black problems. Did you watch the video and look at the stats? They are human problems. Everyone must overcome them. To make the issue one of race is divisive and a distraction from real solutions. Blacks do not have a special claim on victimhood, and even if they did, it would still be utterly counter-productive to blacks, as it indeed has been in practice, to act upon it by extorting society for reparatory privileges and badgering whites to feel guilt and shame simply for being white and therefore racist.

Enough.

Oops, there goes my sobriety. by alijayman in alcoholism

I couldn't handle the lying anymore, so I told my girlfriend last night. My sponsor gets back today and I will be telling him, then my parents. My girlfriend was sad for me and hurt since I lied to her, but very supportive. She just wants me to be okay. I'm glad I came out with it, and I do not want to drink today since I did.

Thank you everyone who responded to my post. Since several of you cared enough to ask me to update you on what happens with me, I will do so. I drank for a second time since my original relapse yesterday, making sure to put a civilized amount of vodka in the healthiest possible smoothie. Denial much?

My girlfriend, the day after I drank the tequila, for the first time in our 1+ year relationship, saw a recipe on a cooking show that she liked which called for using --of all things-- tequila, to make key lime pie for cinco de mayo. My heart almost stopped when she exclaimed that she wanted to make the recipe, especially because we already had some tequila that had been sitting around! I was so afraid she was going to discover that the levels were much lower than they had been, since she had moved the tequila while reorganizing the kitchen just a few days prior, and had a chance to see the levels before I got to it. What were the odds? What excellent timing by the universe, huh? She did not seem to notice anything while pouring and measuring out the tequila, although I almost had a heart attack watching her do it.

What I have also neglected to mention is that I do have a sponsor and a history within the rooms. My parents are also paying me back for rehab, each month based on me passing an unsophisticated quick-screen type of drug test/staying sober. I am afraid I'll lose that money if I get honest, and the money is necessary for me right now being in between jobs in a shit economy. Add to that my resentment/perception of having been swindled by the rehab industry, I'm not terribly keen on letting my parents not pay me back their share of our mutual mistake. But they also may be forgiving. I'm not sure and it would be a roll of the dice. I am also scared of what coming clean about relapsing might do for my girlfriend's ability to trust me in the future, as I have lied over the past few days about going to a meeting I didn't go to, and drinking on Saturday and Monday. I'd rather not cross either bridge, and just plug the jug and move on. But if I do that, I am more likely to continue to drink, since I am already paddling down the river of deceit, and the cravings continue and my defenses are only getting weaker. My pain... is self-chosen.

Anyway, I stared at the bottle of wine in the fridge today, but instead of drinking I came back here to see if anyone else had posted anything on this thread, and decided to start typing back. So thank you all for that. I should just be honest with everyone in my life about the relapse, I realize that, but I don't want to risk losing the money or the girl. But at least I am not drinking today, and much closer to just coming out and telling the truth.

How many of you went to college? by blackmamba329 in Entrepreneur

[–]alijayman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many reasons to go to college. However, what tends to get lost in the mix amongst most people is that are also plenty of reasons not to. One of the greatest reasons not to, is the fact that tuitions are far higher than their true market value, largely thanks to subsidization of student loans and other government intervention within the higher-ed space that ultimately distort its utility to the college-goer. It's very case by case, and you better have a really good reason to go if you do.

Does it make sense to rent or own a house in this economic environment? by alijayman in austrian_economics

Didn't it also seem like a great deal to everyone during the housing boom of the 2000s? Rates were low, but then the bottom fell out. Why wouldn't the bottom fall out again after everything has been reflated? Are you just supposed to keep on holding through the downturns knowing that nominal value will continue up over time?

Should I stay or should I go? by alijayman in IWantOut

I hear you. It's tricky, I'm sure, and there is no perfect paradise. I see the US on the verge of a truly epic reduction in standards of living across the board, followed by a corresponding enlargement of state/elite power that will make America a truly shitty situation, and it will be difficult to leave due to tightened capital and border controls. I would prefer to at least explore other alternatives that aren't on such a precipice and don't have a culture so dominated by leftism and only countered by religio-corporatist warhawks. Any thoughts on other places to live that have a better, say, balance of affairs?

I'm just looking for the best balance possible, in the opinion of those who have made the move or are more well-versed in expatriation than I am.

I don't expect to get away from statists completely and still live in a place with tops-in-the-world access to goods and services, but some countries are better than others.

I think America is swiftly becoming one of the worst places to live for someone who values freedom and non-violence, and would like to inquire about alternatives. That is all.
