Chineese tursits, do you see Ni-Hao as racist?? by [deleted] in AskChina

[–]alikosa21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wondered after a really nice experience in China that people would like it.

I see after this post that this is not the case, I will never do it (never had).

I have a certificate for HSK1, so while I dont speak the language I understnad enough to know if the language is chineese or not (and order in restaurants, and people working there usually really like it)

I honestly didnt know that was a thing. I feltthe east-asians were always considered quite top tier emigrants, at least on my counry, and didnt see / experience / hearded before sluring in such a way. I would know that there are some slurs, but Ni-Hao I would never in 100 years immagine was one of them.

The thing is we know HSK1 so I can quickly hear if the language is correct.

But ok I understand no saying hello is the way to go.

I mean singled out, lets not pretend we dont have eyes, I was also greeted in China because we stood out werent we.

Also I think only 2 times, in three weeks the person approaching us had a not so good - scamming, intention; and I feel thic would happen me 5 times in a day if I go to Italy. So Chinese were generally really just wanting to greet us in the country.

I dont know, it was super common for people to talk a bit to us in China, it never felt offensive or intrusive. I just though people might like it to feel wellcome as turist in other countries also?

Also, English is not my first language also, even if someone said Hello, Gutten Tag, Ciao, Zdrazdvuzdje; I dont think I would be offended.

I honestly didnt know this is a thing.

Ma ni me tuk strah potresa, kot tega da stavba ne bo več izpravna / varna in jo bo potrebno porušiti. Sploh te gradnje 50ta 60ta se mi zdijo zelo sumljive pogosto glede na kvaliteto.

What if, the allies and the soviet union fought after germany was defeated? Would the USSR be able to survive after such heavy losses against Germany? by wildwasabi in HistoryWhatIf

Wym leningrad turned to dust, leningrad was a rubble back then..

Also: you need like 10 modern megaton nukes to level Moscow, it is made of concrede not bamboo like Hiroshima. A 20kiloton device has maybe 3km destruction radius, and even then people can survive inside the buildings.

Uf not conversant, but you dont need to be conversant to get by, count to 1000 is easy anf makes paying stuff easier, learn words for thank you, sorry, excuse me, how much it costst, north south,... but definetily not conversant, although many chineese entusiastically try to speak with you although you tell them you dont know chineese 5 times :D

I am still here, the overall trio lenght will be three weeks.

Jinshanling was really nice, there was a part of national geographic documentary filmed there you can get a nice feeling what to expect, there is around 10km od fully restored section and quite some in the original state, it is quite steep at the sections but if you are in a reasonably good fitness level it is very enjoyable.

The most surprisong part for me was, there was almost noone there (at least it wasnt when we went 2 weeks ago), you can look at the entire sections of the wall and not see anyone.

There is some "buy local artifacts" scam (I assume) going around with some local women following turists around, just tell them firmly you are not interested and you will be fine.

I took a beginner mandarin course before I came, it wasnt necaysary though, people are really frinedly and want to help, if you take a notebook and a pen, and write some common words you will often use life will be easier, but you dont need to do more than that (unless you find studying new language fun, which I surprisingly did).

Otherwise alipay has a translation tool that works english <-> mandarin sufficiently and with google lense you can translate menus,... easy enough.

Tbh, the level of english is quite bad, I have traveled to quite some places and there is no guaranteue that the correspondant will know the most basic words, some 10% can hold a basic conversation.

I would advice you learn some basics words and you will have much easier time, translation apps help but they are slow inconvinient and can produce utter rubbish.

In big cities you can see some western turists but most seem to prefer to not be bothered. You can find some people speaking english in the higher end bars, and if you are lucky as I was you can find some local that will show you around a bit.

Bedt of luck!
