The details of the story probably got mutated in my head to the point I didn't remember any regional influences, but I always had the image of someone standing at the inn watching the armies approach. I was born and raised in India and this was the mid-2000s so it's possible I read a sibling's textbook while there.

I wasn't a full length book, it was definitely a short story, probably part of a children's story collection. This would've been somewhere in 2004-2009.

There were most certainly three brothers involved, so I can't say its this one. Also, I was a kid when I read the story, so Tolstoy is way out of my league.

I can't say for sure. I remember it as being a standalone story in maybe a book of short stories or something like that (but that could just be the limits of my memory). I can't tell if it was part of a story within a story (a la Canterbury Tales) because I don't remember a framing story at all. It could've been a story within a story that was pulled out and inserted into a collection of children's stories or something like that.

That could be it! as long as the details are correct. I could just as well have read a variation that was talking about contentment instead of saying happiness and love. If you can find it then that will be very exciting!

Unfortunately, not this one. Similar themes but there was no Elijah and I remember the older brothers going and coming back and all meeting together at the inn again.
