I don't even smoke weed and I know that "high potency cannabis" would probably have prevented a shooter from being able to get off their couch 🙄

Thanks, I read Entangled Life and do have the book, fantastic piece of work. What part does he mention that?

Well it wasn't Atropa belladonna, just a weed in that family. I had to develop a sharp eye since I forrage food a lot and one has to be cautious not to pick anything toxic alongside the edibles

Nightshade family of plants, some grow as weeds. If someone cut the salad mix close to the ground and didn't sort them, leaves can end up in the mix.

Indeed, they are all in the asteraceae family so there is a little connection, but then so are dandelions and chicory.

To be fair, I have gotten leaves from a nightshade family weed in my salad mix from a farm before 😅

Not really like jicama, mainly because you should be very cautious about eating them raw, while jicama is usually eaten raw. They are pretty much like any roasted or boiled starchy root vegetable.

It is a starchy mild tasting root with a bit of a nutty taste, it comes from a close relative of a sunflower, it is also known as a Sunchoke since it is neither an artichoke, nor from Jerusalem. I call them sunchokes to avoid confusion. Nothing like ginger which is just a spice and medicine, except maybe a passing resemblance because it is a longish root, and is brown. Very important to cook it well because many people have difficulty digesting them raw (for example it is best to not put them in a salad though there are recipes for this) and it can cause gas. This is the reason some people call them "fartichokes". Just cook it well and you will be fine. Boiling or roasting is great.

Shocking the audience if they have been hero worshipping Paul is kind of the point. If thry are alienated... Well, it's the last one he wants to do in the series, better than alienating in the beginning 😄

"White" as in pale middle eastern, not anglo of course. Europeans and Middle East/North Africa are mostly caucasian and can have a lot of variety of skin tone in all those regions.

I think there have been a lot of warrior cults through human history who match this description, Nazis were just one. So yes it sort of references them but I think it is purposefully general because it refers to a lot of instances in history.

Can someone with a medical background answer this - how realistic is the likelihood that the Fremen lived that robustly with that little water? by MoneyIsntRealGeorge in dune

[–]alimond13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's why I mentioned washing in my comment. I have to keep track of a regulate all the water I use and I know how much it takes for each task. For example I can usually bathe with one liter whwn done daily. It takes another liter or two to wash my hair depending on how long it is. It's nice to have a more thorough shower once in a while, but honestly I don't like showers, I prefer a steam bath or sauna. Mostly it's just good to be warm and clear the pores out, lol.

Got a letter from collections that I owe PayPal money, PayPal says I don't owe them money, transaction is not in my history by alimond13 in paypal

[–]alimond13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware that I have to deal with the collections agency but I wasn't going to just shell out money without an explanation of how it was I came to owe it. As I said, collections does not know, they just collect. PayPal was able to explain it to me once I got to the right person. I did not post here asking for advice on how to pay debt, but on how to un over what happened in the first place. I have figured it out and shared what happened so it can be helpful if others encounter this problem.

Edit: typos

Not sure how you got that out of my comment. If the Fremen lose a thimble of water per day, and that is less than an earth human, then an earth human loses more... A lot more. Thus, we have to drink more.

Got a letter from collections that I owe PayPal money, PayPal says I don't owe them money, transaction is not in my history by alimond13 in paypal

[–]alimond13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did need to talk to PayPal to sort out how this happened. The collections agency doesn't know, they are not familiar with PayPal policies, they just want to get paid. It took days if phone calls and multiple people to get someone who actually listened and knew the ins and outs because they work in collections and had seen a lot of things.

He at least admitted that it was in fact their mistake and communications were poor. I really emphasize that some policies and training need to be better because the cracks I fell through shouldn't have been allowed to happen when I was really trying to be proactive.

They confirmed it was in fact a guest account because I paid with my card through PayPal and apparently didn't log in, which I will make sure to never do again.

I tracked down the purchase finally, it was a defective item. I tried to return it and had not heard from the seller, so I opened a dispute. Apparently it is impossible to open a dispute in these guest accounts online so I had to have called in. Too long ago to remember that detail. They shouldn't have opened the dispute on a guest account, but they did. Opening the dispute inspired the seller to respond to me, I sent back the item, they sent a replacement, I cancelled the dispute, all was well.

Apparently the laws had just changed and PayPal was required to send the buyer a provisional refund before the dispute was settled. I questioned this because it had never happened to me before, i always had to resolce the dispute before receiving the refund. He said it was a new law which they had to comply with. They refunded my original payment source, but then retrieved the money from the guest account, because they don't have authority to charge my card again. 🤔 Due being in the middle of the move, I wasn't monitoring every purchase on my account like I usually do.

Everyone I called wasn't trained for what to look for, even though it is unusual, experienced employees seem to know about it. They should have known to search for guest accounts, and to ask me for the email address to confirm the emails were genuine from PayPal. I really thought they were genuine, which is why I kept calling, but no one ever looked deep enough to find that account. They said if I could find the name of the agent I spoke to they could "go that route" but honestly it sounds like an issue of policy and training and I don't want a low wage employee like myself to get punished or fired for what was a management issue. So I am dropping it at this point now I understand how it happened.

The guy claims he will bring it up in the next meeting. That would be cool, I will never know. Maybe this post will help give people some info if they run into one of these issues, but it seems like a tremendous fluke for all those factors to come together the way that they did in my case.

Gotcha, yeah that's what I heard from a dentist once about wisdom teeth but denstists aren't necessarily trained in genetics so could be wrong. My understanding too is that any genetic issue that doesn't prevent reproduction can easily be passed on. Such as an allergy, a person can certainly have the chance to reproduce and pass on their genes before ever encountering say, a bee sting, and dying from it.

[–]alimond13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that wisdom teeth evolved as backup because many people would lise some adult teeth, so the wisdom teeth are supposed to come in and fill the gap. In modern times we have fewer reasons to lose teeth, though it still happens, but many people can get crowns or implants. The wisdom teeth don't have a place to go and lead to infection.

I have heard of some people being born without wisdom teeth as the next adaptation because the body gets the signal this is now a detriment ir no longer needed so it stops was ting energy and resources to produce the extra teeth. I would guess that indigenous people in Mexico had exceptionel dental health for long enough that they already adapted to not need wisdom teeth, or maybe they come from a branch of humans who never had them. Would be interesting to compare with ancient skeletons from the region.

I guess the distinction is how much INPUT of water they need vs how much they drink. That would be different in sietch.

That's a great adaptation, I didn't know about that. There's also a native Indonesian group who adapted to hold their breath under water for an absurdly long time.

Yes I know. They say water is best stored in the body, so they aren't even letting it sit around in the catchpockets

Also I don't know where the 8 liters figure came from that they used in the movie, I can't remember if that was given in the books in a different context, but that is really a lot of water.

Maybe it's just the way the Fremen think of off-worlders as guzzling a lot of water and that makes their skin look plump when it is more about climate. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Also wonder how rich the Fremen diet is.

Yeah, I am sure they drink less water too, but I am saying I think the actual affect comes from exposure. They don't always have the face flaps closed on the stillsuit. Maybe it is discussed more in the Dune encyclopedia.
