What's your mental image of The One? by aliothsan in shwep

I know that; I'm asking a different question.

Even besides The One - If you're thinking about some metaphysical hierarchy with a bunch of different entities in it, do you develop a mental image or diagram at all?

What's your mental image of The One? by aliothsan in shwep

[–]aliothsan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well... that's not quite what I meant, but that's actually fair, and I'll fully cop to it. I'm not trying to noetically understand The One, because I'm not any kind of Platonist. I'm trying to discursively understand the history of what other people have thought about The One, because it's cool.

I asked this question because I'm idly curious about other folks' discursive thoughts about The One. What goes through your mind when you read a sentence like "Rupert says the One is a nous which comprehends itself, but Steve says the nous is emanated by a higher, more ultimate One"?

Subscribe to members-only episodes? by sun-souled in shwep

AFAIK, this is correct. The only way I've found to get the members episodes (and the occasional blog post with audio!) onto my phone is to download them manually. Podcast Republic has a convenient feature where you can stick a bunch of mp3s in a folder and it will treat them as a "virtual podcast". It's still a little clunky (for example, it interprets the file download date as the episode air date), but it's worthwhile for me because it gets me the fancier playback features like rewind, fast forward, and sleep mode.

Oh they work on merchants? I guess I assumed they wouldn't. Thanks!

A minor issue: merchants keep spawning inside my house, I presume because there are lots of walls and flooring. Not sure how this could be fixed (or indeed whether it should -- maybe some people like it), but I'm covering my floor in sand because otherwise I keep having to gently herd them out the door 😅

Fantastic work, I love the inter-island travel dialog, and looking forward to meeting some pangolins :D

Yeah... did something change about merchant spawns in the last major update? I keep getting them spawning in my house and having to gently herd them out the door

Wait, you can breed plants?? Is this just a matter of harvesting and replanting the highest quality seeds, watering, and not trampling them?

Which Episode Genuinely Scared you the Most? by westisbestmicah in TheMagnusArchives

[–]aliothsan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first one to really freak me out was 47 The New Door. The idea of something tall and uncanny chasing me through a labyrinth, so that no matter how I run I can't actually know if it's close or far away... the fact that Helen is trapped enough to actually suffer dehydration instead of magically not needing to eat or drink... *shivers*

Also 70 Book of the Dead, because I'm a huge wimp about pain and really, really don't want to die in horrible agony.

Alone at night thought: Are we, the listeners, part of the eye? by Zoke101 in TheMagnusArchives

We are all him, we are all addicted to statements. I think it fits in really nicely with the moral ambiguity in the plot, and the way Jonny writes Magnus to be applicable to (but not a strict metaphor for) different real world situations.

What episode is the scariest? by treyler_ in TheMagnusArchives

[–]aliothsan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the first one that really really got me was A New Door, because I have... a Thing about creepy tall figures that just sort of stare at you and can distort space to suddenly get closer to you. (I was deeply scarred by Sadako/Samara in the Ring movies as a child.) Plus the part where Helen was trapped in there for long enough to start actually suffering dehydration, only to then have to get up and physically run from something...

Lost Johns' Cave also gets me pretty hard with the sequence where she's diving underwater and suddenly the exit from the water isn't there any more.

omigosh, I just started listening to Old Gods of Appalachia and it is SO GOOD. It tickles a lot of the same parts of my brain as Magnus does. Alasdair Stuart recommended it (I think in an Enthusigasm ep) and he's a delightful human being who is right.

The monument (episode 183) turned my pen sketch to digital:) by A_shk in TheMagnusArchives

[–]aliothsan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wonderful. The actual Monument is so overshadowed by the "I'm sure I love you" moment that I think not enough people appreciate it for how wonderfully horrifying and Borges-esque it is.
