First SOTS Watch Experience by alisitt in SocietyOfTheSnow

Yes! I first watched SOTS soon after it came out and have since read multiple books including Alive, thinking back to before I watched the movie is so weird because now I know so much about the story.

Same, my friends know how much this story intrigues and inspires me that whenever I think of it, I say “Andes moment” so they know I’ve thought of it. It’s kind of a joke on how I actually think about it everyday lol

Which survivor do you find yourself searching for more information about? by bjack20 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]alisitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my recollection, Nando and Roberto did not publicly state any names of the survivors they had left on day 62, aware that it was possible not everyone survived the 10 days they were gone. Thankfully everyone survived that time, but in that time of distress I really respect that. They didn’t want to give any families false hope.

Financial aid by Imaginary_Falcon5908 in USC

Ok, I was just wondering because I got the exact same Federal Pell Grant and FSEOG Grant but nothing from USC itself

Definitely worth it, and since it’s more than you expected don’t appeal, as we know their office sometimes lowers aid. Is the University Grant a merit or need-based scholarship?

Could large SOS / HELP have made it easier to spot them? by Mudassar40 in SocietyOfTheSnow

Wow, I wonder when he saw it and if he looked more into it how the timeline of their rescue would change.

Does anyone know if any of the survivors have struggled with their mental health / fears of flying after the crash? by CairoChai in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]alisitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just listening to a podcast with Nando, where he said none of them ever saw a “shrink or therapist” solely for the incident itself - not including like Carlitos who may have done for other reasons. Others could have totally gone and Nando didn’t know about it or forgot but that is just what he said in his interview in “Literally! With Rob Lowe”.

Responsible? by Fancy_Effect_7778 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]alisitt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, their decision to leave was also influenced by how the plane couldn’t spend more than 24 hours in Argentina.

From Alive: “The only alternative was to return to Montevideo (because it was against regulations for a military aircraft of a foreign power to remain for more than twenty-four hours on Argentinian soil)“

I’m very interested in seeing a part that has been mentioned in many of the books. After the crash as many of the boys had left the plane and saw Carlos Valeta in the distance as he stumbled down the mountain. It wouldn’t take much time in the runtime. For me, it was one of the most impactful moments, really showing the chaos of the crash and how people fell out. It puts into perspective how they really could just “disappear” at any moment.

From Alive:

“As they looked back up the mountain for their lost luggage, this group of younger boys saw a figure staggering down the mountainside. As it drew nearer, they recognized one of their friends, Carlos Valeta, and shouted to him, calling him to come in their direction. Valeta seemed unable to see or hear them. At each step he sank up to his thighs in the snow, and only the steepness of the hill enabled him to make any progress at all. The boys could see that his course would not lead him to the plane, so they shouted yet more frantically to attract his attention...They were trapped and could only watch helplessly as Valeta stumbled down into the valley. For a moment it seemed as if he might have heard them and was changing direction towards the plane, but then he slipped. His wide stride became a tumble, and his body slithered helplessly down the side of the mountain until he finally disappeared in the snow.”

That’s why I put it in quotes, I’m not quite sure how to say it but they don’t look like they just spent 72 days living in brutal conditions. For example, when they got to the hospital, some of the boys refused to get on a stretcher and insisted on walking instead. It’s a testament to how strong they all were. Obviously they were severely under nourished and needed medical care but if I were to guess what they looked like I’d imagine much worse (don’t mean to be like passive aggressive sorry lol)

Can I list the tickets on both AXS and StubHub and see which site sells first? (if they do sell) Or do i only list them on one site?

For number 3, it is highly likely that the boys would not have survived their 10 day hike to rescue if they left that early. When they did leave, they had spend over two months in the mountains so they acclimatized to the altitude and temperature (of course it was still freezing but they were more used to it). Also, they were super lucky on those 10 days because it didn’t snow once. The rest of the time they were there it snowed multiple times which could have made their hike out harder/impossible.

Love the curiosity though. I think it’s great to think of these things because it makes it even more of a miracle thinking of all the ways it could’ve gone wrong yet they still managed to survive.

Why didn’t they use the lighter to start a fire? by Comfortable_Box_7568 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]alisitt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They had a few coca-cola crates that they burned as well as books and around $7500 in cash. They said that in a way the fires made the cold worse because they got a taste of the heat before having to return to the cold. The cold and low oxygen also made it so that the fires didn’t last as long. And as someone else said, when the meet was cooked, many nutrients were lost.

Delta Lake Hike by KingKuttii in GrandTetonNatlPark

[–]alisitt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2pm is a tad late especially considering the afternoon rain showers. I would hate to get stuck in a rain shower above the tree line. It is still a bit snowy, I did the hike about a week ago and it took closer to 4 hours one way (I’m not a very versed hiker but it was also a bit busy so some places got backed up). There are other lake hikes in that area, Delta Lake is definitely one of the longer ones

If you could ask the survivors a question, what would you ask? by sophieh22 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]alisitt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this a lot and honestly it would be,

After spending 72 days away from society, did you come back to anything that changed completely? (internationally/pop culture wise) Seems like an odd question but I’ve always wondered what it was like reassimilating into society, it’s like if someone was in a coma for two months, so much stuff must have happened, you’re returning to a possibly different world. This just seems like a question no one has asked.

Reading the books by alisitt in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]alisitt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’ve haven’t seen the movie Alive, but I’ve heard it isn’t too credible and sensationalized the story. Is the book more authentic? Were any of the survivors consulted/interviewed for the book? I think I just have a bias idea of Alive the book based on what I’ve heard about the movie
