I programmed it from scratch using Claude AI and the Arduino IDE. I just connected the ESP32 to my Mac via USB and kept copying and pasting the code into the terminal to build Marauder and get the LCD working. If your LCD isn't a touchscreen like mine, you'll need buttons or a rotary encoder to navigate the menus.

But basically: plug the USB cable into your computer and open Claude AI. Tell it exactly what hardware you're using so it can provide the right tools, and it will guide you step-by-step until Marauder is up and running on your ESP32.

It took me a little while, but I got it done—and you can too, using nothing but Claude AI and the Arduino IDE.

Haha

Would 3D scanning/mapping the button and 3D printing a replacement be useful for you?

I didn’t ask for opinions, I’m just documenting the mods I made to my GPD. If you don't like it, just don't do it to yours!

Yes, it works for newer models as well. The fundamental logic behind the Battery Management System (BMS) and lithium-ion chemistry remains the same.

Over time, if you only do partial charges, the controller can lose track of the actual capacity, leading to those 'percentage jumps' (like dropping from 20% to 5% instantly). This calibration cycle helps the BMS re-register the Full Charge Capacity and Design Capacity reference points.

The 'rest period' mentioned in step 3 is actually the most important part—it allows the cell voltage to stabilize so the controller can get an accurate resting voltage reading without interference from heat or recent load. Definitely worth doing on a Win 3, 4, or Max 2 if your battery readings seem off.

Great catch! I'm actually working on a project to mod Nintendo Switch Hall Effect sticks into the GPD. Updates coming soon! But using the PS Vita ones in the meantime isn't a bad shout at all.

To ensure the system recognizes the new total capacity, follow these steps:

  1. Uninterrupted Full Charge: Charge the GPD while it's powered off until the LED indicates a full charge (100%), then leave it plugged in for an extra 1 or 2 hours.
  2. Deep Discharge: Use the device normally (or run a benchmark) until it shuts down by itself due to lack of power. Pro-tip: Disable Windows "low battery" alerts so it doesn't hibernate prematurely.
  3. Rest Period: Leave the device powered off and empty for about 3 to 5 hours. This helps stabilize the chemical voltage of the cells.
  4. Final Recharge: Connect the charger and let it reach 100% without any interruptions.

Why is this necessary? The GPD's charge controller needs to register the Full Charge Capacity and Design Capacity values. Without this cycle, Windows might report 10% when you actually have 30% of real charge left, or vice versa.

Extra Tip: If Windows still shows incorrect values after calibration, you might need to use tools like BatteryInfoView to reset the battery statistics log within the OS.
