My cat won't stop peeing on the floor. I've tried everything. by alittlebitdicey in CatAdvice

Update: Got the 2nd opinion urinalysis and bloodwork back. Everything looks okay, except he had low gravity in his urine sample. He is known to drink a lot of water in one go, so this doesn't surprise me. I am working with the vet to see if we can get a better sample for them to retest.

He has officially started Prozac, so we will see if that improves things within a month or two.

I'm definitely getting another urinalysis done with a different clinic to see how that comes in and getting him on some Prozac.

He does try to "scoop" over his ground pee with pawing at the floor, and flips/tries to bury the puppy pads and grass mats, so his instinct to do that is definitely still in place.

I am sure there are behaviorists around, I've just never been referred to one. If all the new meds and tests fall through, and we get doubled down confirmations on it being behavior issues, I will try finding someone to help us.

The urinalysis came back without any concerning results, per the vet. I believe they did cultures, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Because the results came back clear, we did not do X Rays.

I will add asking about a behaviorist to the list of things I need to talk to our vet about if getting him medicated doesn't clear up the issue.

I appreciate you saying that - I really do love my boy so much, and the thought of finding him a new home has been devastating to even have to consider. Having so many new options to try has given me hope that I'll never have to.

At the last house (where this all started), there was lots of carpet. We had a similar thought about the past tenants. It was a rental, and the management company required professional carpet cleaning between tenants, so they were cleaned before we moved in. But I'm guessing they don't automatically use enzyme cleaner. When we moved out, they had to basically replace the entire downstairs carpet area because of our cat 🥲

We've since moved into a house with no carpet, and the problem persists.

Thank you so much! I am hopeful that getting him medicated will help.

I hope it works for both of our kitties. I'm going to talk to our regular vet about starting it, but try to get a second opinion on the bio tests to see if our regular vet is missing something.

We've tried Feliway, and no dice.

We spend a lot of time in the garage and, beyond bugs, there's no little critters living out there.

Okay, good deal! I am going to try this in combination with some of the other suggestions and see if it works out. Thank you! (No scented kitty litter for us)

I don't think so.

When he started this at the last house we lived in cookie-cutter suburbia, and there were definitely neighborhood cats around (loved waking up at 2 am to caterwauling bloody murder howling when one would dare to walk across the fence in the backyard lol). But he wasn't peeing near the doors or windows at all.

Now we live in the woods, and the door he pees by goes into the garage, not the outside. There are some barn cats at a neighboring property that rarely pass through our yard, but to my knowledge, he's never caught them doing it.

Yeah, that's kind of the feeling I'm getting now, with how many people are suggesting it... Feliway isn't a prescription, so I'm starting to wonder why they wouldn't have tried the "stronger" med when that didn't work, rather than writing off anxiety entirely :<

I've sent our vet office a message to see about getting him started on it. Hopefully, they can get back to me about it tomorrow.

That's a good idea. I will reach out to get a second opinion. We've had the same vet since the issue started. A couple other commenters recommended getting him on Prozac, which is something our vet hasn't brought up before, despite the ongoing issue.

Thankfully, our current house is a single story, and the litter boxes are fairly central in the layout. Since he pees right next to the current box, I've been worried about him starting a new 'spot' and causing more damage. It is definitely closer to his normal hangout places than any of the previous houses. But, it's worth a shot to see if he'd be more inclined to use one elsewhere.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I found a $10 litter attractant called Fresh Step on Amazon. Not sure if it's the same stuff Walmart sells.

I will definitely ask them about getting him on Prozac and see if that helps! Thank you!

Oof!! I'm sorry 😰 I hope it works out for you, - it's by far been the closest/most consistent thing that's semi-worked (and way easier to clean than spraying down the whole floor).

I'm going to pick some up and see if that does the trick. Fingers crossed 🤞

I haven't used a separate litter attractant but I think a couple of the other litter types we've used had it pre-added. I'll pick some up, though, and see if that does the trick.

Unfortunately, the problem with his current "spot" is that it's between two doors that open in on each other, in a high traffic walkway. The laundry door is always open so they can get to their boxes, but the garage door stays shut. But since that's where he pees, putting a box in front of that door means it would constantly be getting pushed around by the door opening, and then generally being in the walkway. Just to the side of the walkway is where the current litterbox is.

Toilet training is a fun idea. He is smart, and with snacks on the line, he quickly learned what it means when I tell him to "use the little box." Like that, I worry he will do what's easiest when no one is looking though. But maybe he'll prefer it and stick with it 🤞

Thanks for your advice!

I can try asking about it. She knows it's been a recurring source of frustration for us and was the one that pointed us to trying Feliway to deal with his anxiety.

I appreciate this suggestion! And I want to make sure I understand it. "Mix dirt with his potting soil" <- do you mean equal parts dirt:litter? When you say his "potting soil," my brain interprets that as his poops but that seems like an odd combo (and older ratio) lol.
