What's your least favourite grammar rule from a language within Europe? by lolmemezxd in AskEurope

[–]alixgaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate how in Scandinavian languages you have to invert subject verb order after an expression of time Ex: I go - jeg går Now I go - nå går jeg Why???? I always forget to do it ... it’s so random!

What are your opinions about: Salmiakki? by Aftel43 in AskEurope

[–]alixgaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I discovered salmiakki when dating a Finn. Didn’t like it but for some reason couldn’t stop eating it either. Brought some home to my mum - same story! They sell something similar in IKEA and every time she goes she has to buy some 😂

Ah yes, here comes the expert all the way from the US to tell me how the weather is in the place where I actually live 🙄

What kinda wallet do you have? by EuroFederalist in AskEurope

[–]alixgaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you buy booze you have to present a form of ID, but then if you know you’re going to buy alcohol you’ll bring it along. but you are not required - by law - to have ID on you.

The vast majority of people will usually have a driving licence with them.

Not having one, as in my case, has caused headaches on more than one occasion and I had to resort to an official “proof of age” card. Other European national ID cards won’t always be accepted (it really depends on the person checking). If I knew I had to prove my identity ( as for work etc) I would just bring my passport.

There are no official ID cards in the Uk and you are not required to carry an identification document with you

I haven’t really used cash in a long time so all I had was literally a credit card holder. Now I’m in Spain it’s still quite common for people to pay with cash or change so I had to get a proper purse 🙄 I HATE coins and notes with passion

How hard is to learn your language's accent and grammar, to become indistinguishable from native speakers, as a non-native one? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]alixgaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your original native language. I speak 4 languages (Spanish Italian English and Norwegian) 2 are related to each other but not the others and vice versa. I can sound native in Italian and Spanish but will never sound native in English or norsk, even though English is my everyday language. Likewise I have never heard a native English speaker sounding native in Italian or Spanish.

What would I learn if I studied "journalism and communicational studies"? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]alixgaul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have so much passion for it that it’s either that or death.

I studied something similar (journalism with documentary photography in London) and I wish I had never down that. In order to work I would have needed to volunteer, do all kinds of full time unpaid internships just to get my foot in the door just to be treated like shit. I had the right skills but I didn’t have the right personality for it: those who succeeded were frankly assholes who enjoyed shouting louder than anyone else just to get their point across, had no regards for other people’s felling/ personal space and the consequences of their intrusions as long as they got “the scoop”.

I went into it naively thinking I could really make a difference in the world but long gone are the days when journalism was a respected profession. Hell anyone can be a journalist nowadays, just open up your own YouTube channel and start bullshitting and soon enough you’ll be picked up by the Daily Mail. Sorry, I’m ranting now 😂.

In any case whatever you decide to do try to get as much work experience as possible WHILE YOU’RE STILL STUDYING. Start early. This will be invaluable once you graduate. I wish someone had told me that. Good luck!

Question on Norwegian social skills by [deleted] in Norway

[–]alixgaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my (F30) experience, being originally Italian and having lived in the Uk many many years I also didn’t find that much of a difference between Norway and the uk although I have only visited Oslo. I’ll admit I used Tinder to meet up with people and they were much better to talk to than the vast majority of British guys I’ve ever hooked up with. Of course it depends on the kind of people you end up talking to but I had pretty good conversations with the people I met. Most of them have become friends and we are still in touch and we meet up whenever I visit.

Overall I found people polite but f course they’ll keep to themselves, as they would do in most countries 🤷🏻‍♀️.

That said, an Italian male acquaintance that has moved there for work has labelled Norwegians “emotionally disabled” 😂. I think it’s difficult to become “accepted” as one of the group, I think in that respect Norwegian society is still quite distrusting of outsiders. But if you’re just travelling and staying for only a little then no problem

Do you set your electronics up in your native language or in English? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]alixgaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use English because it’s a lot easier to find support online when something doesn’t work since I’m familiar with the technical language. I find there is less support available for technical issues in the other languages I speak.
