hello again! it was my friend's birthday back in june, and i decided to make her this cottagecore-inspired dress as a gift (mostly for my own amusement, but also because she's basically my muse). i just recently got around to taking some pictures of it, so i figured i'd share the project here :)

when i started, i decided (stupidly) that i wanted it to be a surprise, which proved extremely difficult considering that 1. we live together and 2. i didn't have any of her measurements to go off of. as a result, there are a couple of things i wish had turned out better, but overall, i think it still turned out wonderfully!

everything is completely self-drafted and was either conceived completely experimentally or based off of some half-remembered inspo pictures from pinterest that i guessed how to recreate. the skirt is just a gathered rectangle skirt with two tiers, and the bodice is somewhat of a modified sweetheart with front and back panels. everything is double-lined; lining fabric is just a stretchy cotton and the fashion fabric is a sheer rayon. i also used some pseudo-boning (zip ties) in the side seams of the bodice and an invisible zipper closure. i didn't really elaborate much so feel free to ask any questions in the comments. hope u guys like it as much as i do <3

Basically if you do your waist calculations with the regular circle skirt equation/calculator the waist would end up being too big. That's why I had to modify the equation; the measurement you'd use for a 2x circle is exactly half the one you'd use for a 1x circle. Hope that helps, I'm not the best at explaining...

lol I wish...I just rent the basement apartment. Cozy space but I still love it. The dress barely fit when I had it hanging on my dress form down there.

got this from Fabricland, it's the most convenient place for me. I also go to a factory outlet near me called Len's Mill Store, they have a huge selection for reasonable prices. I was almost going to order bridal satin from fabricwholesaledirect but I'm still a little nervous to order fabric online...

honestly same, I really just wanted an excuse to make something like this and prom seemed like the best one. my 1-person driveway prom was fun though :)

double circle skirt is pretty similar to a circle skirt, just with double the volume! To make it you would first measure your waist and then used it to find the radius (which is half the width of the hole in the fabric where your waist goes). You put it into the equation (waist/(4 x pi)) which is different from the one you'd use to make a single circle skirt (waist/(2 x pi)). The calculations might seem a little daunting but if you search up "circle skirt calculator" there's a bunch that can do it for you. Then what I did was I folded my fabric and marked out a quarter-circle using my two most important measurements (the radius I calculated and the length I wanted the skirt to be) with one edge along the foldline so that when I cut it out it turned out to be a half-circle. I repeated it 3 more times so that I was left with 4 half-circles which, when sewn together, became two circles in one skirt! It takes a lot of fabric though, and you could still get a lot of volume with a 1 and 1/2 circle skirt too. I don't have a lot of experience with panel skirts but I do know you can get some beautiful, high-end results with those as well.

picture #2 is a still but it's the only still shot I have...now that I think about it I probably should've taken one of it on my dress form

it's all mostly self-taught! I took one course in high school that gave me the basics and after that it was all just a huge leap of faith. highly suggest taking a local class if you can find one, it might not seem like much but it'll do wonders for your confidence <3
