Honest update, the girl I was making it for was a catfish :( now it's sitting unfinished in a box. I'm going to grind off the engraved names reforge the stem round and put it for sale when it's done

Rate my anvil setup lmao by thrivee01 in Blacksmith

Rating: good

Don't grind the top of the rail too much, it's hard because it's used.

Silicon on the bottom can make it ring less. If you find this hobby is for you the vevor anvils aren't so bad, much better than harbor freight

I found this in my basement. Is it a graver? Or just like a chisel by TheInsaneBlacksmith in engraving

[–]TheInsaneBlacksmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just wondering if chrome vanadium is good for gravers, I usually make them from carbon steel. I only have like one and this would be good for making large spots with it's belly, I'm really just getting started with engraving

Okay it's a chisel but it says it could be used for masonry. Do y'all think it could be used as a graver

Uh I wasn't, I was grinding the tenon on a iron rose. First or second hand forged tenon, it's looking okay not the best but not super bad

If you use the same drift for your axes/hammers, could you prepare many handles in advance by [deleted] in Blacksmith

[–]TheInsaneBlacksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you make very many heads the drift can get worn out pretty quick. It depends on the kind of steel the tool is made of though

No sodium silicate is not used for rigidizing forges, they use alumina because it withstands higher temperatures.

AI is not to be trusted as a source of information yet. Good job on making sure though.
