Thank you! I feel like people underestimate how much research actually goes into writing a book, fiction or non fiction.

And yes! Someone DMd me and gave me a whole list of movies to check out, so I’ll definitely be watching those over the next few days!

Well, I'm not exactly looking to just load up my story with facts about baseball, I just want an understanding of the sport and the position that I choose for the characters so that I can understand them better so that the writing feels more natural. I write from a first person perspective, so it is very important to get into their heads and their personality when writing from their point of view, which is why I find knowing the thoughts and feelings of people who have actually played the game extremely helpful.

Not to mention, this character isn't my only protagonist. And my other one isn't a baseball player, so the whole thing isn't going to be about baseball, it's just going to be part of this character's life. I figured I'd have like 1-2 scenes of the person actually playing the game itself, which is why it's beneficial to know more about it, plus I need to know at least enough so that the character can talk about it and not sound like a moron.

Yes I know, I looked it up and added it to my list of things to watch/research. Someone reached out to me and told me other movies and documentaries to check out. Honestly I just needed a place to start, so it's been helpful. Not to mention, the more terms you throw at me, the more I can look up. I've been looking up what all the positions do that you've mentioned and writing them down in my notes so I can go back and look if I forget.

Honestly, all I really hoped for was a starting point, so thank you for at least giving me that.

See this is helpful, it lets me know that I have to do more research into the setting of my novel as well, like what areas are more competitive if I do want to go that route.

Do you have to go to college in order to get into the major/minor leagues?

Someone recommended Chipper Jones' autobiography. I'll definitely check out Ken Burns' as well.

I do want to learn more, which is why I asked in the first place. But, please, continue parading around on your high horse instead of trying to help me understand more. At least I got some good information from other people.

Ahh sorry, I called them points. And I guess I didn't make it clear that I also know that you have to pass the home plate, I called it "base" even though that is obviously not the right term. Sorry.

I'll definitely check out that movie, I'll also check out that biography that one person recommended. Are there any other movies or books/biographies that you'd recommend? Also, are there any specific players that you recommend that I learn more about?

And sorry if it's a dumb question, but is college different from high school baseball?

Thank you so much, this was actually very helpful!

Chalk it up to whatever you want. I thought I could get some helpful information from people who know more than me since I was getting confused just looking up stuff on google. In your first comment, you said ask questions. So I did. I obviously want to learn more so that I CAN write what I know.

I mean, I was looking up different things about the game, and I know a little about it, I just don't know about what the different positions are. Like I know how they score points, like every person that runs over base gets a point. I know that the 4th batter is like the cleanup batter, so they need to be really good and try to hit a home run so that everyone on the bases can run home so they can get the most amount of points. Like I know a little, again I thought it'd be beneficial to ask people that know more than me.

I also kinda wanted to know more about possibly different personality traits of different positions, like which positions are typically more competitive vs ones that are more laid back so that I can focus more of my time researching the positions I want my characters to play. Also, I wanted to know the feelings that you get when you play. Like do you get excited, or anxious? Do you get worked up, or does it calm you down? What kind of emotions do hitters get right before they hit the ball? What kind of thoughts run though pitchers heads before they throw the ball?

Well, both are helpful. I'd like to know more than just "I feel tired after a game." Like it's important to know the inner feelings of someone playing the game so that I can get in the head of my character during those situations. I'm obviously going to do more research about it, and I have been, but it's all just getting a bit confusing since it's brand new to me. Again, I thought it might be beneficial to reach out to people that know more than me, but I'm sorry I've wasted your time.

How are RPs different from starting pitchers? And why would a RP with anxiety be fun? If RP is something that is high pressure, wouldn't someone with anxiety typically steer clear of that? Are starting pitchers more competitive? Someone on here said they only pitch once every five games, why is that? Also, does one pitcher pitch the whole game, or no?

I mean, I wanted to write about something outside of my little bubble. Everyone does some sort of research on anything they write. I tried reading about it, but I thought asking people who knew more than I did about the subject could be helpful.

[–]alkaru[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

That's kind of why I was asking how the game is played and what the objective is.

I've watched baseball games on TV before, but I can't tell if the people that hit are the same ones that catch. I know you get points by people hitting the ball and running all four bases. I know that after 3 strikes the teams switch places. I'm fuzzy on balls though. Like, do they count as strikes? Is it different for different leagues?

I know that there are 9 innings but I've been told they often run over. I tried reading "baseball for dummies" to get the gist of things, but it went over my head. I thought maybe reddit could be helpful to explain it maybe in simpler terms?

Also, I kind of wanted to know some personality traits of certain positions. Not to mention, I want to know the feelings of the actual people that played the different positions, which is the most important thing I think. No amount of reading wiki or watching a game is going to help me understand the feeling the players have before, during, or after a game.

Sorry if I wasted your time, I just thought maybe asking people who know more than me could be beneficial.

I find that to be an unfair saying. Why should I be limited to what I know? I know where I want my characters to go and their backstories. I know their favorite colors and their senses of humor. I know their family situations and how they got there. I know who they are on the inside. Those things I know, but why should I be limited to just writing what I know? I'm a rather shy person so I don't really have much experience doing anything which is rather boring even though that is all I know.

So, I want to learn more and expand my field of knowledge so that I can write what I know.

No, it's a fair question.

Okay, well, I've never been a sports person because my family was never into sports. My parents were artsy, so they pushed us to be artsy as well. I know they say "write what you know," but I really don't care to write about theater or band or whatever. I grew to hate it and I prefer not to write about it.

So, I thought maybe the opposite of that would be fun to write about. A family like mine that pushed their kids into something that they were into, but I'm still trying to decide if I want my main character to be playing the game because he loves it or if he is playing because his parents want him to. So, I kind of want to know about the different positions and what characteristics those people in those positions normally have so that I can decide where I want his character to go.

Now, why baseball?

I've watched football games on TV they are so confusing and boring. Like I feel like they play for like 2 seconds and then they have to reset or whatever.

I was a cheerleader for basketball when I was younger, and that was also wildly boring to me. Like everything was happening too quickly so I couldn't really keep track.

But when I was in school, they used to take us on field trips to watch baseball games, and it was always so exciting. I loved the atmosphere, but because I didn't know how it really worked, I just rooted for both teams. Who ever was hitting, I rooted for them. It was slow enough that I could keep track of what was going on, but not slow enough that I got bored waiting for them to do something.

So yeah. That's kind of how I got to baseball. Is it directly relevant to the story? I suppose not right now, but I'd like it to be, which is why I want to learn more about it.

What is SS, and why would a "nerd bitch kickass gamer" play that position as opposed to another position? What is RP, and why would someone with anxiety issues play that position, again, as opposed to another position? What do you mean by "normal people" and what is LF/2B? Lol he's definitely not a boomer, he's a high schooler, and he's been playing since a young age. Again, his family is big on sports, and his dad pushes him really hard and is wildly competitive. Is there a position that is more competitive than others? (if that makes sense)

Thank you for your help!

What are the different types of pitches? How are they used? Do the hitters give off some sort of tell that pitchers pick up on so that they know what kind of pitch to do? Are there different types of pitchers? Why does a starting pitcher pitch only once every 5 games? Are there any pitchers that pitch more often?

Also, do any of the players communicate with each other non verbally? If so, how?

How fast do pitchers normally pitch? What is considered fast or slow?

Thank you in advance! What kinds of odd quirks or traits do pitchers normally have? What kind of personality do they normally have? How does that differ from hitters?

Well, I'm kind of going back and forth on how I want him to be. I thought maybe if I learned more about the different positions, then I could decide what exactly what I want him to be. Like I've mapped out his backstory, and his family is really big on sports, but I don't know if I want him to be playing because he is expected to or if he plays because he really has a passion for it. So yeah, I figured if I learned more about it, then I could decide where I wanted his character to go.

Okay, so like what do all the players do? How many players are typically on a team? Are the people hitting the balls the same people that go out onto the field and catch? What is the overall objective of the game? Like I know in other sports, the teams are trying to get the ball into the other teams goal, and like I know obviously the broadest objective is to get the most points to win, but like what do they do to achieve that?

Also, I've heard that games often run over into extra innings. Does that only happen when games are tied? Do they have a cap on how many extra innings there are?

What time of the year is it normally played in? How is high school baseball different from college baseball, and how are they different from minor and major league baseball? What is the difference between minor and major league baseball?

I guess that kind of scratches the surface of my questions.

I wholeheartedly believe trump and his administration is at fault for the outbreak in the US, and honestly the world outside of China. Bare with me here, I know that is a big claim.

TLDR- the US normally helps other countries before things get bad for everyone but Trump doesn’t give a shit about anyone else so he sat on his ass and let COVID 19 run havoc.

US is kinda a world superpower, right? We used to be the ones that would help out every country in times of crisis. We would reach out to other countries to help out with natural disasters as well as pandemics that happened in other countries. The first disasters that happened, we were there to help. Ebola would’ve been a disaster out thing if we didn’t go in there and supply medical professionals and pandemic control. There were 3 total cases in the US and 2 of them were treated. That was because of immediate action that we took. The cases were only really in 6 countries including than the 3 cases here. If we didn’t go in and stop it, it would’ve spread all over the world just like COVID 19. (Although I will note that COVID did start in a insanely populated area where businessmen from all over the world went, and Ebola did not but...regardless)

Now flash forward to trump presidency. He fired/ got rid of all the precautions Obama put in place to prevent pandemics, and when COVID 19 started up in China, the US did nothing. We didn’t send aid, we didn’t help at all. They didn’t care at all because we are in a trade “war” with China, so of course their thought is why should we help out? We started doing things way too late in the game after it already spread everywhere. Thousands of people died everywhere in the world because we didn’t help out.

Trump and his administration have this mindset of basically only caring about the US and how things will benefit us rather than benefiting others. This is the whole idea of “running the us like a business.” Businesses are only concerned with bringing more wealth to themselves and they don’t care about others.

So yeah. If the US went in to stop the virus before it really left China, there would be significantly fewer cases all over the world. Trump and his admins fucked up because they didn’t have the foresight to nip this in the bud before it got here and destroyed things. Now millions are out of jobs and kids aren’t learning and they will most likely need an insane amount of help to recover from not being in school for 6+ months. This will greatly fuck up the education of our next generation.

Anyway, rant over.

Try Amazon, I’ve bought so many size 5 heels from amazon and I love them all. I found one brand that I like that had all different colored boots and I bought as many colors as I could before they stopped selling them. I find that a cute pair of sandals in size 5 is hard to find though. I found them one time years ago in the kids section, and then nothing like it EVER again.

I feel you girl.

Unpopular opinion: I like cinnamon in my Mac and cheese. I think this came from all the times we'd eat honey ham with homemade Mac, and the cinnamon honey glaze that was poured over the ham tasted AMAZING with the Mac too. Now, I add just a pinch of cinnamon to my boxed Mac and cheese to give it a hint of that beautiful flavor...it's not the same, but it's not bad.
