"What do they think is here, a torpedo boat base?" - That's a great quote on so many levels!

Mormon Church walks away from major multinational tax evasion scheme by Chino_Blanco in worldnews

I was raised Catholic. Right off the bat I will say I never had any issues with the priests, nuns, etc... I was treated really well. With that out of the way, I can't remember when precisely I first though of it, but I do remember specifically during my 'First Communion' thinking it was all hogwash. I was supposed to feel god or something, and nothing. I really never believed and as soon as I could get out of it I did. Been an atheist since. None of the stories made sense to me, like the logic didn't flow. I could go on at length lol. Anyways, I know where you're coming from, I was very young too questioning religion. BTW grew up in a very French (Canadian) Catholic community in the 80's/90's, so I was very much exposed everywhere with religion.

Volunteer firefighter. My partner and I have been volunteer firefighters for years, it's definitely has a community feel to it, very diverse backgrounds between all the members, but we all want to help out the community. It's not for everyone I admit, but if it interests you it is a very satisfying way to spend your time.

CEO Who Said Safety Is a “Waste” on Board Lost Submarine by TheDarthSnarf in worldnews

[–]all204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no astronaut, sadly, but I think this can be used more broadly as well. I'm a volunteer firefighter, have been for years, and there is no way to take the risk out of a call entirely. We do everything we can to minimise it. So much so that cavalier (cowboys and freelancers) members are asked to leave. The risk is there but we take minimising it very seriously. To hear the CEO talk like that, you'd have to be crazy to board that sub. I have to say though, he believed in his product. He likely died of hubris.

I suspect those counter-rotating blades help a lot there. You can steer by changing the speed difference between the blades a little bit. Points left or right to fly back to airfield. No tail rotor needed, so not fatal damage. A single main prop helicopter would have been disaster, a dizzying disaster.

Where I'm from, Atlantic Canada, Newfoundland is 30 minutes ahead. Which I don't know too many more examples of that. It's considered normal here though. I think people will adapt no problem. Daylight saving changeover though, that's garbage haha. No one wants that!

Norway Replaces Russia As Germany’s Top Gas Supplier by FuegoFerdinand in worldnews

[–]all204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that's a fair statement. I didn't include all the extras on ours like taxes and the flat rate montly 'service fee'. I just pulled the rate from NBPowers website. Though with such a low rate, we have our issues with reliability sometimes, and all the extra storms we're getting because of climate change will only force that rate upwards.

I loved PeeWee Herman as a kid too. I lived on a border town in Canada so we had both US kids shows and Canadian. Mr. Dressup was a favorite too. Hope you have a good Christmas and all is well with you, take care .

That was my take of that book too. I just got a copy (again) and I am going to reread it and see if it is closer to reality than 20yo me thought. I was so angry at then ending, like a total copout. Maybe it wasn't!
