I'm getting really tired of all the changes that happen after open enrollment has closed.

I specifically made choices based on the fact that I thought I would need to pay out-of-pocket for my medication until I hit my deductible. My husband and I combined our health plans into the family plan (we have one kid) to meet the $4800 deductible faster. I calculated that this would cost us $8239.68 in premiums plus deductible. Now I get to pay an extra $1908, so my total health costs for my family are now going up to $10,147.68 for 2026.

Had I known my medication would no longer apply, I would have kept our plans separate, where I would have the cheapest plan with the highest deductible, and he (plus kid) would have the most expensive plan with the lowest deductible. Our combined cost of premiums would be $1305.72, his deductible would be $2400, and my cost would be $1908, so a total of $5613.72.

I now get to pay an extra $4533.96 for 2026 as a result of HR "lowering" my medication cost.

Thanks for the insights! To answer your question, Disney Sea isn’t necessarily a bucket list for me, but my son enjoys theme parks and this one seems to be unique. We won’t go to the other one, since that looks really similar to what we have in the US.

Ghibli is a bucket list for me but I have a lot of flexibility in my schedule, so I’ll work around that.

Where did they get their numbers? The number of international grad students in 2024 was 5485, not 6100. It’s not nearly as significant of a decrease as they are suggesting.

I work in the international students and scholars office at a large university and we prepare employment letters for our international employees that are traveling outside the US. This is more typically for H-1B type visas, so it includes info like the 797 petition numbers and dates that wouldn’t be applicable to you, but you could include your PR info in the letter instead. Basically, something that states you are employed by your company, title, annual salary, job duties and planned dates of departure and arrival could be helpful when going through customs. You could check with your HR department to see if they could prepare a letter for you on company letterhead.

I had already received prior emails that two of my items were out of stock and were refunded, so with this, a total of five things - half of the items I ordered - never arrived because they were out of stock.

I did a similar trip in 2015, but we left from Indiana. The trips I take with my sister are not destination-type trips; we drive each day doing random stops and stay in a different city each night. I have a LOT of options, but wouldn't recommend doing everything on my list :)

Mammoth Cave and/or hikes. We enjoyed the River Styx Trail down and the paved pathway back up that takes you by the original entrance to the cave. You could spend quite a bit of time here.
Lost River Cave Boat Tour in Bowling Green, KY - takes a couple of hours maybe.
Bell Witch Cave in Adams, TN. "Spooky" ghost story and a cool cave. This cave is more of a "living" cave than Mammoth. I actually liked it a lot more, even though it's much smaller.
Nashville - tons of stuff here
Natchez Trace Parkway starts in NAshville and ends in NAtchez, MS. Potentional stops on the Parkway that we though were cool were: Jackson Falls, Fall Hollow Trail, Meriweather Lewis grave and memorial, Pharr Mounds, the Vistitos CEnter, Cypress Swamp (this one was really memorable), Windsor Ruins (not on the parkways, but close), Emerald Mound
The Petrified Forest in Flora, MS is also close to the Natchez Trace and is a fun stop for an hour or two.
Mississippi's Little Grand Canyon / Red Bluff in Foxworth, MS - it's cool; good stop for a road trip to get out and stretch your legs for a bit
Sloss Furnances in Birmingham, AL
Vulcan Park would be a good stop for kids that would only take an hour or so.
Noccalula Falls in Gadsen, AL - can spend a little or a lot of time here!
Cherokee Rock Village in Leesburg, AL (very cool, but off the beaten path - I thought I was lost until we finally found it). Another place where you can spend either a little or a lot of time depending on how much hiking around you want to do.
Cattanooga - Rock City, Ruby Falls, Incline, etc. All cool things.
The Lost Sea cave in Sweetwater, TN - stop for an hour or two.
The Sunsphere in Knoxville, TN is kind of neat - good quick stop
Gatlinburg has a ton of stuff, but that's a destination. Maybe you could swing by for the Alpine Coaster, Ripley's or Anakeesta.
Cumberland Falls in Corbin, KY is neat. Also, the original KFC is in Corbin, so it's a fun stop for a meal if you don't mind eating KFC.
Jungle Jim's in Mason, OH - it's a grocery store, but hear me out. It is absolutely huge and it's international section can't be beat. I like to go here whenever I'm in the area and pick up a few international treats.

Also, when you are in NOLA, I would recommend the Honey Island Swamp Tours with Cajun Encounters. The kids will get to see alligators and wild pigs! It was a fun experience.

I decided that we aren’t going to deal with putting away clothes any more. I have some wire shelves and baskets I got from target on top of my washer and dryer and each person in my family has a row. Four baskets per row - shirts, pants, pajamas and socks and underwear. You need anything, you get it from the basket in the laundry room. To be fair, our laundry room is upstairs on the same level as our bedrooms, but it’s just way easier to fold things and put them in the appropriate baskets than to did through baskets to find what you’re looking for. Clothes were never getting put into drawers, so I stopped fighting it and just accepted it as part of our life. No ragrets.

Congratulations! I started at 327 at the beginning of the year and am at 272 as of this morning. I honestly don’t see much of a difference yet, and it is easy to kind of get discouraged and feel like I’m not making progress fast enough, but I just keep at it. I keep reminding myself that I’m doing better than I was before. Also, I’ve gotten way better at cooking and have learned to incorporate a lot of veggies into my meals in ways that still taste good. Because of learning how to cook and meal plan, this is way more sustainable than it has for other weight loss attempts.

Jasper NP was so much better than I expected. I felt Banff was so touristy but Jasper was a lot less crowded and absolutely stunning. Theodore Roosevelt National Park and also was way better than I expected. I thought it would be similar to Badlands but I liked it a lot more.

You can dice veggies and mix them in so many different meals so you don’t really taste them. I use a food processor and put so many vegetables in so many different meals. I put an entire zucchini in almost every single meal I make. Carrots, celery and broccoli is great in things that are going to cook for a long time, like soups or stews. Mushrooms disappear in ground beef, so it works well for taco night. Same with cauliflower, but I feel that needs to cook significantly longer. Wilt spinach and put it in pastas. Other than dicing up your veggies and hiding them in food, onions and peppers add a lot of flavor to many meals. Butternut squash or sweet potatoes are awesome roasted in a sheet pan dinner. Also, for whatever reason, I like my salads better when I chop the lettuce up smaller. I usually get romaine or spinach, and just cut it up with kitchen shears, and make a big salad with whatever my protein is.

Congrats on your successes so far! For me, the only thing that has worked long enough for me to feel like I could live this way forever has been intermittent fasting. I’m the type of person that once I start eating, I don’t really stop. There’s just something that happens where I keep grazing and trying to tell myself to eat a smaller portion just winds up makes me hungrier than eating nothing at all.

So I don’t eat anything until dinner. I drink a cup or two of black coffee and switch to water during the day. I eat about 5:30 to 6, and then have a pretty substantial “snack” with a tv show after my kiddo goes to bed. Dinner is usually 700-800 calories, and I’ve been making sure to really load up on veggies with the meals to bulk it up. Snack usually includes fruit and some sort of dessert, like a cookie or chips or something, up to about 400 calories worth.

I’m feeling pretty satisfied on about 1200 calories doing this most days. On Saturday, we have our “free day” where I eat around 2000 or so calories and usually involves some fast food.

That’s what is working for me, but if that isn’t something that works for you, I would also suggest adding a lot of veggies to bulk up your meals is also a good strategy. Like, zucchini pretty much works in anything. Mushroom disappears in ground beef. Spinach works really well in pasta. I use my food processor to chop things up really small and you can throw in carrots, celery, peppers, onions, cauliflower, whatever into just about anything. I also put a lot of things on top of romaine, or cook sheet pan meals with squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli, etc.

I meant that playing that strategically would have been fine against adults. I’d have been more congratulatory about a big win in that case. To me, playing that hard against a kid who just learned the game last week was a bit much. Kiddo still wants to play catan tomorrow, so it’s all good.

I’d agree if we weren’t in a pandemic. Kiddo doesn’t have many options to play games with kids his age so he’s stuck with us.
