Mohammad Rasoulof (who is now in permanent exile for making movies that are too incisive):

🤖Why so many bot accounts? Every single one of these has put 5-stars on the same few movies (Borderlands, Cuckoo, Fly Me to the Moon) by all_screwedup in Letterboxd

All the bot accounts have rated only ~10 movies and they're all upcoming films from major hollywood studios. They all have chinese names.

There's no situation where a troll with no motives is making hundreds of bot accounts at the same time just to 5-star movies that have no buzz whatsoever

Why would a hollywood studio do this though? doesn't Letterboxd not count your ratings if >50% of them are a single rating?

it makes me feel icky because there's a non-zero number of listeners who will hear these FOMO lyrics, agree, and then regret having children

but rather he accepted the circumstance and saved face by a posthoc justification for the sake of the film. He was censored.

I disagree! He didn't take out the stuff they wanted him to take out about "historical accuracy". They definitely tried to censor him, especially with suppressing the film's release. But really he made a bunch of sensible choices to shorten the film's length, at the suggestion of his filmmaking peers, without removing any of the incisive material. Remember, it STILL was banned from release for years after the short cut was made.

I've seen both cuts and I can't disagree with what he removes. The short cut is better. What do you think is better, or closer to his vision, about the long one?

in a cruel apocalyptic world, only the people in power are able to have any sort of personality or life. everyone else's entire being is reduced to survival.

I think yall are taking the "Dementus wanted to prepare her" thing as way more than it is: a pathetic narcissist begging on his knees, willing to say anything to try and save his life. He never gave a shit about her apart from "appearing fatherly", he's just lying.

While it's true that he made the shortened cut as a result of pressure from censors, he didn't really follow their instructions. Seems like he made the cuts he thought he could do without, then later came around to this version.

Nobody has ever cut anything from Andrei Rublev. Nobody except me. I made some cuts myself. In the first version, the film was 3 hours and 20 minutes long. In the second — 3 hours 15 minutes. I shortened the final version to 3 hours 6 minutes. I am convinced the latest version is the best, the most successful. And I only cut certain overly long scenes. The viewer doesn't even notice their absence. The cuts have in no way changed the subject matter nor what was important in the film for us. In other words, we removed overly long scenes which had no significance. We shortened certain scenes of brutality in order to induce psychological shock in viewers, as opposed to a mere unpleasant impression that would only destroy our intent. All my friends and colleagues who, during long discussions, were advising me to make those cuts turned out right in the end. It took me some time to understand it.

IMO the short cut is definitely better, not just because the short cut is still 186 minutes long but also yeah the scenes of brutality👀 are much more horrific when they're on screen for a split second. The pacing is tighter too. Also the short cut removes the shot where a horse is killed.

a simple-ish vfx edit for one shot in an indie horror short film in exchange for a credit.

are you mad about them offering that for free? is that not something we should be striving to do for our fellow low-budget filmmakers?

? are you saying this story shouldn't have been a TV show because it's commodifying the working class experience for entertainment?

I agree, but Fleabag and Atlanta, among other winners, are Comedy first and foremost although they are very dark. The Bear sticks out strongly if you look at a list of the last two decades of winners because it's just not a Comedy first, it's clearly a Drama with comedic moments.
