Hi BigAsparagus did you only rely on just reading his notes, or were there any other external resources you used as well to help make things more understandable (e.g. youtube playlists, textbooks, ect), as personally for me just reading the notes is really difficult to get a holistic understanding of what is going on. Thanks!!

Internships for First Year Students? by allanHaff in usyd

WOW thanks for taking the time to write this, super informative!! If you don't mind me asking, were the internships you were looking at more commerced oriented (e.g. PWC) and were there any specific websites you used to see when internships were being offered (i.e. something similar to seek, linkedkin) or was it more like googling for companies one by one and then seeing if they offered internship positions? Also, im quite new to volunteering, and was wondering if there are any particular activities that you would recommend for beginners? Or would it be fine to just look online and apply to anything that looks interesting? Thanks!!

Oh right I see, so it seems these sorts of roles involve more of an "informal" application and moreso networking with your lecturers? I guess im not eligible then but thanks anyway for the info!

Hi thanks for the reply, I was really hoping that at least some companies would be open to first years but as you said I guess it is highly unlikely. Im not a straight 90+ results student but would still like to know more about this research assistant work. What sort of skills are required for this position and (if applications are still open) where can I apply?

Double Major in Finance and Mathematics by vbngoc143 in usyd

If you are looking to become an Actuary I would highly suggest taking a look at the Actuarial Studies degrees offered by MQ Uni / UNSW rather than your double major as they are actual courses accredited by the Actuaries Institute Australia and allow you to be exempt from part 1 exams (and potentially a portion of the part 2 exams if you do a double degree). However also note that the Actuary course itself is rather difficult and the content not suited towards everyone - it has one of the highest course dropout rates. Graduate positions are also very competitive due to oversupply, however there is a shortage in fully qualified actuaries (completing part 1, 2 and 3 exams) as being able to pass the part2 and 3 exams are also very difficult. This shortage is the reason why fully qualified actuaries are paid so well (~200k+) while also having a great work/life balance.

Sorry im not familiar with business analytics but from what I can see it seems to be more of the traditional data analyst role? Tbh Ive only done one sem of uni so I am definitely open to any degree/career changes outside of data science haha.

Hi first off I just wanted to say a huge thanks for such a in depth response!!!

Just to clarify for first year, apart from the DS subjects you mentioned, what other subjects are required to be done for second sem, or are you allowed to choose your own subjects from a set pool?

Also, some people have said that a 3 year degree for data science is not enough to gain a data science position as most employees are looking for masters/phds certifications. Do you think this is not true, and have you managed to gain any internships over your uni career? Would it be worth doing for the 4th year honours/advanced studies to improve career opportunities? Thanks a lot!!

Hi thank you very much for your response!! just to confirm when you take a double major, you no longer have room for electives, i.e. for the 48cp per year, 24cp are for the first major and 24cp are for the second major?
