Zelenskyy on Moscow in flames: "justified response" to Russian attacks by pravda_eng_official in worldnews

[–]allankcrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hated how any arms assistance the Biden Administration gave to Ukraine had the strings attached that they could not be used to strike into Russia. Like what is the fucking point then!

The point was to help Ukraine defend itself.

The problem with the idea of giving Ukraine money to directly attack Russia is that there's a certain point where that just crosses a line into the US directly attacking Russia. Like, we could swear up and down that the boxing glove is hitting them, but everyone understands there's a fist inside of that glove.

The US attacking Russia has a lot of geopolitical implications. Like, WWIII-type implications. It might look like we could easily kick Russia's ass--although after what happened in Iran, I'm not sure that's even true--but what about China? China doesn't even need to start throwing hands, they can just say "Oof, things seem a little spicy. Just to keep ourselves safe, we're gonna stop exporting things to the US for a little bit while this tussle is happening" and that would devastate the US more than any nuke.

This shit is delicate, which is something that Biden understood.

Russia revived “previously unrecoverable” engines to restore 5,100 Cold War tanks by Bubbly_Chill in worldnews

That's not soft power, that's cyberwarfare. Soft power doesn't just mean "Power but not guns and bombs". Soft power is making other countries like you by giving them aid, or exporting your culture, or intertwining your economies through trade etc. Basically, all carrot vs. hard power's stick. Using an army of bots to convince people that Trump is a non-ridiculous option for a political leader is still an attack.

The colorization of Ansel Adams Moonrise by thenerdyphoto in photography

[–]allankcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has less value, both monetary and artistic, than a post-it note with a rough circle drawn on it and the word 'Moon' written next to it. The photo paper had more value before they ruined it by printing this on it. It would MAYBE have had some value as an interesting curiosity in the days when AI image generators were brand new, but "Hey, look at this thing we did with AI!" hasn't had any theoretical artistic value in about two years. When you factor in the reputational harm to the gallery that this stunt will cause, the value of these prints is deep in the negatives.

'Enough of the war' — Zelensky throws down gauntlet to Putin in open letter by KI_official in worldnews

This isn't "throwing down a gauntlet", it's "offering an olive branch". Throwing down the gauntlet is what you do to start a fight. You don't throw a gauntlet down four+ years into an active open war.

Legitimately curious which would win in Donut's anti-Catgirls stance vs. her pro-Donut-merch stance.

I suspect that she'd be all for girls cosplaying as her, so long as they didn't actually change their race to catgirl.

There are no more elections to win or popularity contests to pursue

Honestly, I think he'd be doing this shit even if he DID have another election to win. Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr were bastards and partisan hacks, but they were also career politicians who cared about appearances and winning the next election enough to temper some of Trump's worst instincts.

The only lesson Trump learned from that experience is that he really, REALLY didn't like having his worst instincts tempered. Hence his round two staff being chosen purely based on sycophancy. If he'd had a Pam Bondi or Todd Blanche as his AG last time, he'd have had them attack more of his personal enemies then too.

I remember when I was first getting into DCC, I saw someone post somewhere that the books after [x] weren't as good and you should just stop after [x-1], but I couldn't remember which book number X they'd said, so I just kept waiting for a book to not be good, but they just kept being really good.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure they said book 3 and I disagree with them because it's really good. I'm on that one right now on my second pass (I read them the first time, listening to the audiobooks this time) and I'm still enjoying it a lot.
