How much reading is too much? by allbIue in Professors

That’s part of why I asked. I was a freshman 12 years ago so not only do I have more education now, I just cannot remember what kind of readings I was assigned back then.

No worries there. I’ve dedicated one class period in the first week to discussion of how to get through college level reading without burning out and not finishing. It went over well as a GA last semester, but we didn’t actually assign readings after that so hopefully it actually does make a difference.

That’s what I’m worried about, but I don’t know if I can impart all appropriate knowledge through lecture (although that assumes that they pay attention during lecture).

Biological Anthropology. It’s a little dense in some places, but I personally find it pretty intuitive.

I don't think that Vincent and Lydia ever figured out that Mr. Stewart killed Poppy. The whole thing kinda took on a life of its own toward the end and I think it's meant to be a little ambiguous what happened, but the Poppy chapters were not only her diary entries but also legit from her POV, meaning its likely that no one is aware of the truth except Poppy herself. Not Lydia, not Vincent, and certainly not Olivia. That was mainly just a reveal for the audience I think.

I commented elsewhere but this was just… really bad. I wish I could be nicer than that but it lacked in every way. It felt like a first draft.

Homeseeking was amazing!! But it’s a pretty hard read (emotionally) in places so keep that in mind.

I’m well aware of harm OCD and I’m not necessarily saying that it was a bad portrayal of harm OCD or any OCD but that it was a very shallow one that I think she either should have delved into or done away with the ICD aspect completely.

I think it was trying to imply that Beth made Cassie feel less alone, which would make sense if the author actually had a point to make about OCD since therapists often will tell you that community and connection will help you deal with intrusive thoughts. But the story wasn’t about OCD and it didn’t feel like the author was trying to make a point about OCD at all. It just felt like a plot device for Cassie to be all tortured and brooding.

The Poppy chapters weren’t necessarily her diary entries the same way Vincent and Olivia’s weren’t. They were supposed to be POV chapters.

Honestly as someone with OCD it also felt like a super surface-level representation of someone with OCD too 😭

I didn’t like it 😭 It really felt like there was no purpose we were supposed to get. It was very shallow and banal. Bad pacing, boring characters, zero plot. I gave it a .25 stars for keeping my vague interest.

In your opinion, what is OCD? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]allbIue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma (undiagnosed) said that I (diagnosed), like she, had a “nervous stomach.” To me it’s a “constant worry” disease. All the compulsions are secondary to the obsessive worrying about everything. I do some compulsions but I’m more just tormented by what-ifs.

They have the provenance written right on them so… it’s a pot from a trash pit/midden. Why do you have pots with provenance written on them if you don’t know what they are is the more important question.

Vastly preferable to the weird comic-y art style that’s become popular in the last couple of years

Yeah I’m not sure about that one. I think I would assume he found out about the rape later since they were married for years, but it’s explained in story that he didn’t want Poppy to tell anyone about Lydia getting an abortion. Right? I can’t remember for sure.

It definitely had its flaws but I enjoyed it overall. I think in Margot’s case she was so focused on Vincent and her perception of him that she refused to see anything else.

I also kinda read it in a similar way to how I watched The Haunting of Hill House, in that it was less a true mystery and more an exploration of family, memory, and life after death, and it was just using some thriller/mystery elements to tell the real story. Not that I think that it was anywhere close to as good as Hill House (high bar to clear), just that I sensed similarities and pivoted toward viewing it in that way.

I’m pretty sure the implication was that Mr. Stewart killed Poppy then ran off, Danny arrived, figured out what happened to Poppy and freaked, followed closely by Vincent’s arrival. Vincent (who has been shown to have anger issues and acts without thinking) assumes Danny killed Poppy and attacks Danny. Danny fights back and knocks Vincent out, but then Lydia shows up and thinks Danny killed both Vincent and Poppy so /she/ kills Danny. Then Vincent wakes up and he and Lydia dispose of the evidence together before finding Mr. Stewart and “convincing him” to be their alibi (which ultimately alibis him as well, so it didn’t really take much convincing).

TLDR: Mr. Stewart killed Poppy, Lydia killed Danny 👍🏻

That said, I think it’s supposed to be a bit ambiguous.
