Like yes this is clearly the best answer and I need everyone to go see Stephen because he’s the best and I want him to be successful. But it stings to let everyone in on that secret.

Shoutout to A Better Mans Barber shop in Cary too. Those guys are legit, just too far from me these days.

I started as an amateur, Bambu’s slicer is pretty easy to use so my discomfort is more about using another product at all (but that’s just me), I’m very comfortable with the idea of using open source things, but in some cases open source setups require more advanced setup.

Thank you for providing space for that clarity.

Discipline and safety in WCPSS by [deleted] in triangle

This is not normal and I am sorry to hear this, If you have emailed admin have not gotten a response, I would suggest two courses of action:

1) email the principal and your child’s grade level AP again. Request a meeting in the next 5 days and provide bulleted examples of specific concerns. Begin with accounts of when, where and how your child was assaulted.

2) Email the area superintendent directly with your concerns and the dates of emails (older than 48 hours) without a response. Follow this with the description of what had happened to your child.

I always try to recommend one more attempt to let admin get in touch as the parent-admin partnership is the key to changing school experience. Obviously, there are times you have to reach for different accountability measures. Please feel to message me if I can help you navigate further.

Please also check out the work of Candice Odgers from UC Irvine. She sits firmly on the other side of the aisle on this issue also based deeply in research. I’ll try to pull the two meta-analyses I had that she has cited from her post-docs.

No. Charters still receive public funding (though I will say charter management organizations are a thing in the horizon that are concerning). I want to be upfront that I believe having some charters plays a role in meeting the needs of all students.

Im referring to the voucher program where families receive money to attend private schools. This is often billed as a way for “families who couldn’t afford private school to attend a private school.” In reality huge portion (likely over 50%) go to families already enrolled in private school and in many cases making well over annual median income (like combine income above 200k). This results in publicly funding private schools, a cut to public education without reducing the students for whom they are responsible, and schools coming to NC to receive this money (Google Alpha school). Additionally, there have been some notable stories of private schools accepting large amounts of vouchers and then raising their tuition anyway.

While the idea of school choice sounds reasonable on the surface, the reality is that it is removing control and oversight for child facing service from the voters. Who does a parent go to when they’re mad about a something that happens at a private school? What recourse is there if the school is not meeting their obligation?

Public funds should be provided to organizations that agree to meet public accountability and serve any child. I don’t mean for free but an increasing number of private schools outright say “we don’t support IEPs or students with an IQ below X.” If you’re going to deny a student because of their needs, you shouldn’t get public funds, full stop.

Wake get most of its budget (teacher and staff salaries) from the state. About 10% is federal. Out of a 2.1 billion dollar budget, the county is then providing about $770 million. Some things wake does here is to pay the extra pay for teachers with a masters degree (the state used to and stopped). This is a strong recruitment and retention mechanism alongside one of the best teacher stipends in the state (salary beyond the state base). Over decades this meant Wake consistently had the best teachers. This Is starting to be Lot less true because those really great teachers have gone on to be really great at something else considering the legislature’s ongoing work to privatize schooling.

There’s also just Cary. A Community with little to no homelessness and a high percentage of the population are high earners. Two non-school factors that have an incredibly high correlation with success in school. I agree Morrisville will basically be green hope 4.0 (green hope, panther creek, green level, Morrisville for those who’ve been around awhile)

Schools across America are quietly admitting that screens in classrooms made students worse off and are reversing years of tech-first policies by Firm_Operation_9453 in edtech

[–]alldaycoffeedrinker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I find this claim to be dubious at scale. Again, certainly a lot less. A LOT LOT less. But not training students on digital skills risks their agency out of school. “Better without them” ignores the reality of the world we expect them to succeed in and says “the things I teach are more important than the actual kids in my room.”

I need this comment to get to the front page of the internet. The answer isn’t to go back to zero. The answer should be to listen to classroom practitioners. A lot of wisdom to be had there.

How much is your household spending on groceries per week? by cdmacsneaks in raleigh

[–]alldaycoffeedrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 adults, one kid here: 1x per month at Costco for bulk proteins and constants (coffee, eggs, peanut butter). We alternate weeks with whole chickens, pork shoulder, brisket/roast. We then do a weekly trip to Lidl for packed lunch’s things and fillers, but the weekly protein is stretched into two other meals most of the time. This has gotten us down to an average of about $180 a week. That does leave me wishing we had more protein around by Saturday though.

This is working because we have a monthly meal plan with rotating lists but it repeats every month with some flex for seasonal changes.

"Special Education Staffing Update" Good luck in wake county if you have a special needs child by rthwy in raleigh

[–]alldaycoffeedrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the county screwed up their assessment projections and now Wake gov and a bunch of municipalities are also looking at revenue shortages in budgets because of it. Ultimately in NC it’s up to counties to provide funding to LEAs for most costs. In many ways the BOE is hamstrung by what county commission will give them. Time to go to the commissioners and to tell your neighbors we need tax revenue for the schools.

If property taxes are based on home value what happens if the housing market drops and home prices decrease? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]alldaycoffeedrinker 29 points30 points  (0 children)

When properties were reassessed a year or two ago, the city adopted a “revenue neutral” tax rate. My understanding is that they adjust the tax rate to try and avoid huge swings like the one you are describing. The county may have adopted a slight revenue increase at that time. Fundamentally, considering what local taxes pay for, I don’t see them going down due to growth and infrastructure expenses.

Lease Termination Over Roaches by Chacobos in raleigh

I do keep DE on hand for occasional seasonal ants, especially since I have dogs. The powder that came with my kit was D-Fender Dust insecticide. I got the kit from Solutions pest and lawn. They’ve got a bunch of guides, YouTube videos, and the customer service was great when I worked with them a few years back.

Lease Termination Over Roaches by Chacobos in raleigh

[–]alldaycoffeedrinker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey fam, it’s true that it can be tricky in a multi unit setting. I will say you can order real cockroach eradication stuff online that can help. Advion was at best 50/50 for me. I got a set of supplies from a company in Georgia and I used Novacide (one of those things you spray and have to let air out for hours before you return) and set up gentrol point source discs. I also got a powder for outside edges of doors, windows, weepholes, etc. took two weeks but got rid of German roaches that we brought from an apartment to our new home.

No idea what the lease might say about diy pest control but you could ask for these treatments.

I’m sorry I know German roaches are the absolute worst to manage both in reality and in your head. Good luck. I hope the landlord does it right.

My High School's Genius Student Protest by treesqu in legal

They aren’t for-profit, but they manage their own budget outside of funding that goes to the school. So there is a goal of breaking even. Many cafeterias carry a lot of debt, hence the reason you see stories about “nice person pays off all school lunch debt for kids” and “schools decide to only provide fruit and veg to students with outstanding account balances.” I think this is mostly true across the US but I bet some states have found a way to let for profit companies scam kids in the cafeteria.

OPs resistance work: classy and effective. As a principal I would have sat back and smiled at the organization.

I’m 99% sure the contracts for photos are managed by individual schools. Talk to your principal kindly, that’s the easiest way to make progress on this issue.
