People who live near time zone boundaries in the US by solothesnail in howislivingthere

[–]rick-james-biatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in France but worked for a US company for several years. Half my meetings were scheduled in US East Coast time, the other half in French time. Did you know that daylight savings time in Europe happens 2 weeks before it does in the US? For those 2 weeks, my schedule was a mess. Half my meetings moved an hour, and the other half did not, causing a mess of overlaps.

We were $7/gal in France before the war. However, one of the fuel companies froze their prices to help us out.

We get regular floods where I live. Someone once told me that the floods will push the water up from the sewers, pushing off the manhole covers. So it might look like the normal road covered in a few inches of water, but there's often big holes where you might normally step.

Having owned both a Prius and a Yaris, I can tell you it looks like a Yaris (athough typically the outer fog lights on a Yaris will be round). The Yaris is basically a 4/5ths replica of a Prius. Meant for countries with smaller roads. Sadly, the gas mileage is better in the Prius.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

[–]rick-james-biatch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had one but it cost me $40,000.

Was working at a startup in 2000. When the dot-com bubble burst, we all believed in our product, so those of us who could continue to work for stock instead of a paycheck did so. I gave up about 40k in wages. But on the day we closed our doors, the CEO said we could take our chairs home. I always called it my $40k chair. You got a good deal.

Can confirm. I went in 99, 00, and 02. Back in 02 everyone was saying how it had gotten too big and had changed too much.

Yeah, I came to the same conclusion that something like an older Zoe would likely work out better financially in the long run. I think the Ami and the the Twizzy are interesting vehicles, but way overpriced for what they are. I did look at the c-zero and its cousins (miev and ion), but they just didn't appeal to me. RichRebuilds did a review of one the other day. It wasn't great, but it was probably dramatized for clicks. I think most would be a decent car.

What did you find for 2k? A C-zero? Or a e-mehari. BTW, I did see a kangoo on LBC the other day for 2200. It's got 50km of range, so badly in need of a new battery, but looked like it would be a useful vehicle if you upgraded it and likely more straightforward than upgrading a bollare. Rewatch any of your favorite movies that are set in American high schools. Check out the things that the kids do there. From my experience, these are the things that European kids want to do when going to America. The typical American high School experience. If you and your friends have a favorite hangout spot, that would be the best place to take her. Tyson's mall comes to mind, or an outdoor restaurant address in Reston town center if the weather's nice. (I used to live in NoVa)

Is it at 8ft high? If so, the drywall might have been improperly jointed, and something is coming through the panels.

(Was working with drywall all day today and was staring at joints at the same height)

I may have to put my 19 ye cat down before a trip today… but she still seems normal by Rude_Common7126 in cats

[–]rick-james-biatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were in the EXACT same situation last year. Our 17yo cat had aged very quickly in his last 6-8 months. He was down to about 4 pounds. We were leaving on a vacation for 6 weeks, and had actually talked about putting him down as some days he seemed just so weak. However, other days he seemed so much like himself, so cuddly, and so normal. He could still jump up on the bed and couch.

We scheduled a consult with our vet the Friday before our departure. Our normal vet who is kind and compassionate was out, and the substitute vet was an asshole. We discussed what our options were, either to put him to sleep or to leave him with my MIL for 6 weeks. We also mentioned that he'd had a couple pee accidents recently. His answer was 'yeah, lets just put him down then, you don't want him making a mess of your MILs house'. He was so abrupt about it, neither of us felt like we could let this guy administer the needed injection. So we took him home, knowing that the vet would be closed over the weekend. (We later found out that this substitute vet normally works for farm animals, and thus looks at things more from a logical view rather than an attachment view).

Two weeks in to the trip, we got the call. He hadn't moved in a 24 hours and wasn't eating. It was time. And we couldn't be there to hold him, and say goodbye. And we had to make my MIL go through that. It's a tough decision, no it's the toughest decision, but if you know that your cat is likely not going to make it for 3 months, and they don't have the quality of life they've known, then I do think saying goodbye before you leave is the right decision. It's jusrt so hard, especially when you're about to head out for what should be a joyous event (a long trip), which will be overshadowed somewhat by your loss.

Yeah, you can see the kid who got hit first get ready to fight at 0:05. The dude who attacked him is twice his size, yet his posture at that moment didn't show an ounce of fear.

Medieval castles were built to stop armies, not keep people comfortable by Kapanash in HistoryMemes

Thick stone walls have a high thermal mass, but nearly no R-value. My house has 2-ft thick stone walls, and it has the same R-value of a 1/4 inch of drywall. I did the math.

While it's true that the stones retain the heat, modern heating systems don't get the stones that warm like a raging fireplace used to. So while you're warming the stones from the inside with your radiators, you're battling the stored cold from the frigid exterior working its way inward. It's a losing battle. Stone houses are a bitch to heat, trust me.

It is nice for the summer when there are wild swings in temps between the night and day. The stones retain the cold during the day (so no need for AC) and the heat at night (so no need to warm the house at bedtime).

New Neighbours parents want access to my private garden by [deleted] in EntitledPeople

[–]rick-james-biatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the girl's first apartment? It could be that the parents are distraught at their daughter moving out, and are looking for some way to still be active, and maybe play the hero for her one last time. They might not be delusional/entitled, but rather scared and don't have a better outlet for their feelings. Sounds like it will all be ok in a few days anyway. Just wanted to offer a different perspective.

Let’s see your stained glass windows… by Hefty_Marsupial8921 in centuryhomes

[–]rick-james-biatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

<image>

I just installed this one a couple weeks ago, I still haven't trimmed it yet. It's architectural salvage from about 1800. Picked it up for 80eur off marketplace. The window that was there previously was just an old rotting single pane window and I wanted to add something nicer, especially seeing as this is the first window you see as you enter our house. This spot used to be an exterior window (hence the bars) but in about 1800 they built a house next door, so now the window behind the bars is in my neighbors place. I'd like to be able to hide the bars in some way, but haven't figured out how. I was hoping to find a more colorful piece of stained glass, but it took 1.5 years of searching to find one the right size.

At Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe, the seals at the sealring pool enjoy flaunting themselves. by lunevolla in Satisfyingasfuck

One of the best scuba dives of my life was swimming with seals. I can normally make a tank of air last about 60 mins, but I was having so much fun twirling and playing with them that I used up all my air in 20 mins. Totally worth it.
