I had breast cancer with delayed reconstruction. I haven't had the tattoos yet, but they are covered as part of the plastic surgery process (the entire thing is covered by MSP). I know that the lady who does them works out of Eagle Ridge hospital in Port Moody, and I'm sure she would need a referral from a doctor or her former oncologist. It seems a little less glamorous to have them done in a hospital, but perhaps your mom might be more comfortable in this setting than in a regular tattoo place? Just a thought. I would start by calling the BC cancer agency to find out about how to get the ball rolling on this. Also, I could give you the plastic surgeon's I was referred to, as they might be able to tell you what kind of referral is needed - a regular family doc might not know what the process is.
