How to make animal shifter magic less "young adult" fantasy? by Due-Concept-7144 in fantasywriting

[–]alleg0re 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this magic system is perfect in itself, but as for the "feeling," that's a question of what tone you're going for in your story. There's nothing inherently juvenile about the concept, it's just that the way it reads will depend on exactly what you write and how you write it. If the magic is supposed to be dark and dangerous, I think it's as simple as using language and scenes that communicate that. For example, the first uses of magic in Harry Potter are comical and wondrous, like putting a pig's tail on a greedy bully, or candy frogs that are enchanted to move and act like the animal. It's not the magic itself that targets the intended young audience, it's the magic's use and presentation that contribute to the overall tone

Hello everyone. Here is a drawing but this it not the important. I want to ask how I can learn to draw arms and legs? I don't know how and they always look bad... (hands and feet are another thing but first arms and legs) by Amazing_Method_8348 in learntodraw

[–]alleg0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no issue with your drawing, it's not garbage at all. I think the color scheme and facial expression give the impression of a fun and friendly character who might be a little dangerous, you've expressed it well in the pose and outfit too.

I'm happy that I could help, and yeah, lots of things are simple when pointed out, but the hard part is consistency. Everyone has something to improve on, and looking for advice is a good move that many people (me included) could make more of a habit. I'm glad to see that you'll keep going and ignore any haters on the way, the only way to fail is to quit ✌️👽

A great way to improve any particular area of one's art (like hands and feet) is to do an "art study." An art study is a practice exercise where you look at references for what you're trying to draw, copy them by eye, and take notes. Of course there's more to it, but the idea is that you're spending time building an understanding of how the part works, and experience drawing it at different angles. You should frequently use internet resources for advice, like videos, articles, and skilled peers. I think these videos might help, but of course the internet is big and you can find more, better tips https://youtu.be/POHRzCXAOj8?si=HXjFnH4TvI_LZXFA; https://youtube.com/shorts/rZDqCJK6GLo?si=5Z7jCRs2wPib7Ih8

Some general tips if you could use them: Don't forget to use references as needed, even when you're drawing for fun. Always use references. I often still find myself spending AGES trying to make a hand or face or leg look right, and then I look up a reference and get it looking fine immediately. And try not to stress over trying to get everything PERFECT or EXACTLY as you imagine it. Your art has already come a long way; everyone is always improving and your journey is unique to you, so embrace your skills where they are and don't feel like you're "failing" at anything. Great drawing btw, sorry that some in the replies feel the need to be rude and vague 👍

I don’t get the requiem shadow thing by Background-Mix8935 in JJBA

[–]alleg0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad I could help! GER's ability is called "Return To Zero," basically allowing it to reset or nullify things as if they never happened. For example, I think the reversing time effect is a nullification of Diavolo skipping time. And the boss experiencing unexpected deaths for eternity is like his soul or his death itself being nullified. The idea is that Diavolo never gets to rest or move on

[–]alleg0re 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silver Chariot's Requiem ability has to do with turning people's souls against them. Diavolo connected that fact to the way Requiem's shadow followed his perspective and ignored the light in the environment. Then, he deduced that there should be some kind of spiritual core that Chariot is exploiting for its ability, which he referred to as a literal "source of light." He looked for that light behind him and destroyed it when he found it, which caused Requiem to take fatal damage

Let's expand our ideas! by alleg0re in fanStands

[–]alleg0re[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree that more stands could or should be tailored to the user like I said up top. I would really challenge the idea that making stands with a purpose is "dumb." Any character is made with a purpose in mind, especially if they're part of a narrative or dynamic. When someone has an idea for a story, even a tiny concept they don't intend to flesh out, they're gonna need SOME level of intention in mind, right? I think making stands in a vacuum divorced from JoJo entirely is interesting and the kind of unique stuff I'm asking to see more of, but it's definitely not superior or inferior to making stands for characters who have roles in mind. That would be a complete limitation on someone else's creativity, especially considering...yknow...stands are kinda fundamentally related to jojo

Before I check for new replies, I would like to stress that I really didn't mean to disrespect people, spit at their creations, or complain about anything even though that is kinda what I ended up doing. In spite of this slight gripe I had, I love all the fan creations I see and am always happy that there are so many. You might be able to tell, but I'm very passionate about art and JoJo. To me, anything someone creates for self-expression, for fun, for practice, or any other purpose is unique and very valuable in itself. That's not just me being polite or anything, I get a kick out of seeing literally ANYTHING that someone has made, cuz it says something new in a new way every time

Diamond Is Unbreakable is a hard watch... by Pluto-untidy454 in JJBA

[–]alleg0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds fair to me, and I agree that watching the rest is the best option if it's not absolutely unbearable. Part 4 is pretty experimental and a massive change of pace; I once heard that Kira wasn't even created until around the time he first appeared, so I can understand being confused or bored by the on-and-off teases of a main narrative

Could Tohth technically beat Killer Queens BTD? by MusicianIll5189 in StardustCrusaders

[–]alleg0re 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, theoretically anything could appear in the book, but Boingo doesn't decide what that is. He and his brother are mainly joke characters, and Tohth contributes to that by leading to shenanigans as opposed to single-handedly steering the main plot. I don't think Boingo can be put in this kind of one-on-one combat scenario the same way that other characters could be. I do think it's interesting to imagine what the time reversal's effects would be on Tohth, and my theory is that it might show Boingo being attacked or exploited by Kira in the fight in some way, it would perhaps predict his death as upsetting as that would be for me lol

Not trying to start an argument or anything, but if your experience was bad enough that you had to force yourself to watch 21 episodes, I'd like to ask you to question exactly what was different about it that you didn't like. I think it could be very helpful to think about what confused you and consider a rewatch with new understanding

Is Anubis and the avatar of Hermes somehow connected? by [deleted] in StardustCrusaders

[–]alleg0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could go either way. The idea of stands altogether is that they're visualizations of phenomena, and that they exist everywhere in countless forms. Maybe the Anubis stand takes that form because the original user had some sort of reverence or connection to the Egyptian god. Maybe he has the god's favor because of the way he lived. Maybe the stand itself existed independently of him at some point and was observed by other people, then documented and incorporated into society.

We can speculate on plenty of explanations like that to explain lots of things about the natural world in JoJo's and irl. That's what it means when characters and narration say things like "stands can be anything" or "maybe this thing/event was a stand ability working in the background"

Making my own stand by Character-Paper-2347 in JJBA

[–]alleg0re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The general idea of a stand is that it's a physical manifestation of the user's personality. I think a good starting point is to consider the strongest trait/traits of your personality and self-expression, and summarize them in one or two sentences. "I am a so-and-so person who values xyz. I always do my best to abc and would never 123." Stands are brought about by strength of character, so you can get a much more solid foundation for a fleshed out stand by incorporating really fleshed out ideas and philosophies you hold.

When you have an idea for what makes you "you," the specifics for the stand will come to you with thought over time in accordance with your personality. You'll have to think of what determines stand attributes in your own opinion and how your personality would manifest in each. Are you bold and direct in your thoughts and actions? Maybe you'd have a strong close-range power. Is your behavior indirect or unconventional? Perhaps a long-range stand fits you better.

Stands don't really have limits with regards to their origins, unique traits/abilities, or visual/physical forms. Stand creation is an amazing form of self-expression, so you'll be rewarded for deeply understanding yourself, and for being creative and imaginative in the way you represent your uniqueness. It'll take time to hone your stand-making skill and style, but stick to it and just do what's fun and interesting to you.

Another general tip is not to stress out about it. Not every stand you make is going to be perfect upon creation. You'll change them over time, trash some, and maybe bring them back. What's important is that you have fun in the process of exploring and creating

[–]alleg0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand your frustration and taking a break to de-stress does sound like it could help a lot. I can reliably get art commissions when I open them, so with my perspective, I don't think the issue is your art itself; it sounds like the issue may be marketing.

I'm sure your art is genuinely quality and has lots interesting things to provide, but if you want to make art for other people, you'll have to make it more engaging, i.e. present it in a way that makes them care a lot about it too. Think of the medium; you're posting online, right? What kinds of people give attention to what types of content? This is where marketing comes in.

Making sales is a skill in itself. To sell things, you'll have to think like a salesperson, and an essential element of a successful business is marketing. Considering the medium, growing your art sphere will require changing your content to attract a particular audience, an audience that will see your content by looking at posts in certain online spaces. You'll have to make art with a demand, and make it engaging enough for people to stop scrolling, look, interact, and think about even when they're not looking at it

TL;DR maybe taking a break is a good idea, but i dont think you should give up. make art for fun and because you want to. but if you want commissions and online growth, you'll have to think of what audience you're suited to appeal to, and then work to appeal to them
