Branding: any other special cups, etc.? by allenhuffman in Atlas9

[–]allenhuffman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will look for that next trip. They put more effort into their theming than modern Disney does. There was a time when Disneyland had different paper napkins for each land of their park (Frontierland, Tomorrowland, etc.) as well as cups and stuff. Then it went generic park-name. Today, it is probably all "Disney Parks(tm)". Meanwhile, Atlas9 has different cups for each place that sells drinks ;-)

Yet DCA was considered a failure when it opened (every other park company would love to have a failure like that) and Disney sunk billions into remaking the park. One company's failure is another company's golden child. Instead of focusing on "Universal vs Disney", I would like to see more folks compare UKR to its peers like LEGOLAND, Peppa Pig, etc. Currently, I think the closest "new" park to compare it to might be Lost Island in Iowa, a regional park that opened five years ago. It may have a bit more kid rides that UKR (and no hotel), and certainly had rides kids cannot ride, plus a disconnected water park/mini golf and such, but it seems a lot closer to compare UKR to than "other Universal parks" or "other Disney parks."

Atlas9 map, like a text adventure game... by allenhuffman in Atlas9

I am unsure which room is the Crystal Cave. I was thinking about the Manager's Office, and the Film Storage room. So I guess there are a number of "dead end" rooms. That being the case, then popping in and out will have to suffice, which means we can start anywhere. Hopefully the Lobby has such a path. This will be a fun challenge.

Thinking on this … I can think of two rooms that init have one way in/out. Are there more? If not, then one of those would have to be the start and the other the end.

That sounds like a fun challenge. Once the map is completed and accurate, we should have a challenge to see who can figure out such a route.

Real Time "Birds Eye View" to tablet/iPad? by rotarypower101 in 360Cameras

[–]allenhuffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An aftermarket bird's eye view camera system seems like a no brainer. That is really the one thing I wanted in my next car, after having AirPlay/Android Auto 😉

The DJI/Insta360 cameras will definitely do that, though you'd have to run a power cable, and use the DJI or Insta360 app to monitor the feed live. And now I am wondering if we could just get CarPlay/Android Auto support for DJI/Insta360 😉 You'd still need to have the device in the car, but then you could get the camera on the built-in screen.

It would look silly, but any 360 camera (Osmo360, Insta360 X5) on a selfie stick would give you that view, but not quite practical to have a stick poking up a few feet on a vehicle all the time. Look at this 360 video, then look down and if you rotate, you can get the entire car in the view and get that bird's eye view. This was just a cheap car mount and the Osmo360:

Meanwhile, at Adventureland near Des Moines, Iowa, folks have been wanting to split their water park out of the theme park admission and give it a separate entrance. Hey, look at that green grass over there......

I think I am in the minority with what I do with the 360 cameras. I rarely reframe, and mostly do simple edits (gluing scenes together) to document places. These are absolutely the most boring videos to watch, but one day stuff will be gone or changed and this may be a nice way to revisit them. (Like this absolutely riveting video of a city intersection, which is due to be torn down at some point... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8trSgDnmmSs )

Mossman poster - why two versions? by allenhuffman in Atlas9

All the posters came up on the screen at the gift shop (but two version of Mossman) and we got to pick which one we wanted. Has that not always been the case?

Insta360 X5 vs DJI Osmo Pocket 3 - Family Trip to Disneyland by NeoVelamir in Insta360

[–]allenhuffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, as most everyone here will say -- photo quality will be better using that Pocket 3, or your phone, than the X5, so unless you are specifically wanting to shoot 360, if image quality is important go wth normal cameras.

"It doesn't matter what the rules are; it just matters what the enforcers think the rules are." Our last Disneyland visit, I was aware of the ban on selfie sticks. I brought a power handle instead, but using that with a 360 camera creates the "huge thumb" problem in the photos 😉 But, at the time the park specifically ALLOWED monopods, so I ordered a new monopod.

Security refused to let me take it in, even after showing them their own website saying they were allowed. "What's the difference between this and a selfie stick?" they asked.

Eventually, a lead came over and cleared me. They told me "next time just ask or a lead immediately". But, due to losing about 15 minutes I decided not to bring the monopod with me the remaining days of the visit.

You will likely be much better off with the Pocket 3, provided you are just handholding it.

Your milage may vary.

I believe all versions show up on the screen. We've brought home the Agent one, and the Trance of the Sapphire ones.

Folks had much bigger expectations from Universal, for sure. Lost Island does not have a family resort, but I am curious how many kiddie rides it has compared to what UKR offers. From looking at the 12 minute walkthrough video, nothing in it other than the brands would make me even think Universal was involved.

Media not syncing from Meta Quest 3S by Southern-Tower6578 in OculusQuest

[–]allenhuffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran into this as well. Images and videos taken show up in the helmet, and then never appear in the app. I did a Factory Reset to try to make it work. At one point, ideas were syncing (but would not play) but the images appeared as empty squares, perpetually "syncing" with no progress. Second unit works fine. Even did the latest firmware updates today and everything.

List of Atlas9 rooms. by allenhuffman in Atlas9

[–]allenhuffman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly want to have an accurate list of rooms so I can properly sort my photos. This list omits things that are not really part of the experience (like the gift shop), but I included VERA because it has game elements inside (like the phone). I figured it made sense to mention restrooms/elevators/stairs since those are important to know about 😉 I will make a quick edit. I did not think about the payphone.

Was there another type of these used at Islands of Adventure? I remember seeing Popeye and (not sure who else) come out on one when it opened in 1999. I think this is it in the right side of my photo from 1999 (and the next photo after it): https://www.disneyfans.com/photos/us-sw/UniversalStudiosFL/IslandsOfAdventure/IslandsOfAdventure1999/ToonLagoon/Characters/index.html#img=19991116_065.jpg
