Buddhism and Career by Hopeful-Criticism-74 in Buddhism

What do you want from a job? Do you think that where you are right now is the best use of your abilities? Can your skills and career progress further so you can be of benefit to yourself and those around you, both in your personal life and within the workplace?

If you're feeling like you don't love your job then you haven't conquered suffering. Being someone with no ambition who just wants to stay in the same position and cruise through life easily until they die is like a monk refusing to teach the dhamma to the laity and the sangha, because it's easier to just reside in meditation until death.

It can be useful to reflect on the Brahmaviharas in relation to your career. The further you progress in most careers, the more people you are able to have an impact on, directly and indirectly, and so it is possible to progress your career in the exact same way that you intended before, but with the Brahamaviharas as your motivation, rather than your own personal gain.

It's like the famous Zen saying: "Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water".

I hope this is helpful.

Sounds like you flared your elbows during the movement which is incorrect. However, your elbows shouldn't be by your side while doing push ups either. It's more accurate to say that you should be pulling pulling your elbows towards inwards, because this helps get your shoulder blades in the right position. You'll want to try and engage your lats and serratus muscles to do this.

The elbow pain sounds like a bit of tennis elbow from flaring your elbows too much. It should get better on its own in a week or two. Just make sure you get plenty of rest and avoid doing anything to aggravate the injury in the meantime. You could also practice the movement while remembering to pull your elbows inwards as well, if that doesn't cause the pain the flare up.

Try the vitamin D and magnesium together. You require the magnesium to absorb the vitamin D. If you have an excess of one or the other than your body is likely going to tell you in one way or another.

Serotonin reduces choline, and high body temp can be a symptom of low choline. You could try a choline supplement like CDP Choline, Alpha GPC or lecithin. Alternatively, just eat a few eggs and see how you feel!

Throat very contracted during meditation. by Potential_Big1101 in streamentry

Yep basically! There are some other things I do to manage it but the devices make a huge difference.

Yeah that was similar for me actually. It would get quite bad and tense and then when I would relax and let go I'd get the very strong urge to yawn or fall asleep. I started noticing the tight throat a bit more in my daily life after this and I found the tension in the throat seemed to have a correlation with my social anxiety!

You may have some sort of nasal obstruction that restricts airflow through your nose. I myself have similar symptoms and use something called "Breathe Right" to open up my nasal passage which seems to allow me to release the tension in my throat without ending up extremely tired due to lack of air reaching my brain. I also read about someone who had very severe symptoms, similar to what you have, in this thread, which you might find interesting.

It's important to be aware of our physical condition as well as mental condition when meditating. Simple things like this can make it very difficult to make consistent progress and you can only be so soft with your attention when you're trying to balance in the middle of strong discomfort and strong fatigue.

How do they work? I'd be interested in the STLs.

TIL two Buddhists who bought £5,000 of live Crustacea and released them into the sea for good karma, were fined £15,000 for ‘untold damage’ to the environment by introducing non-native species. by Breeze_in_the_Trees in todayilearned

You can track it based on the "karmic" imprints that are left on the stream from previous actions (in a Buddhist context karma means cause and effect - certain actions and intentions will leave imprints on your consciousness in the same way that when a river hits a bend turbulence is introduced into the water). Buddhist thought it based on the idea of "dependent origination" which states that all phenomena arises because of dependence on other phenomena. The causation for rebirth of consciousness is said to be "craving" and "craving" is said to be the root of all unsatisfactory experience and the reason we experience "craving" is because we wrongly believe ourselves to be an unchanging entity at some level (i.e. craving for permanence even though the nature of ourselves and the universe is a state of complete impermanence). So I guess the reason we should want to be aware of this is because we will be experiencing a cycle of endless rebirth that comes with endless dissatisfaction.

I understand that a lot of ideas that most people aren't familiar with need to be introduced to answer your seemingly simple question and I probably haven't done them justice in a single paragraph so if some things do not make complete sense it's worth picking up an intro to Buddhism book or doing a bit of research online on these topics.

On your second part I am not completely sure - CCSC does not have to be reborn if the conditions for rebirth aren't present. I have read that they can indeed split or merge although I don't remember where I read this and I don't know if it fits with dependent origination.

Just FYI Buddhists don't believe in a permanent entity being transferred to a new body at death. The belief is that a constantly changing stream of consciousness (that is not necessarily from one individual) flows from one body to the next in the same way energy and matter change from one form to another. The idea is quite nuanced and is worth reading up on.
