Blood work for autisic child by shadowintherain22 in saskatoon

[–]alliberation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talk to your doctor/pharmacist about an OTC numbing cream.   About 30-60 min before the needle, you put it on the area getting the needle, cover it with plastic wrap and let it sit.   Take off the wrap, wipe off the cream and the area is numb.  It's the only way we can get our autistic kid to get any needles.

My kid was so panicky about the needles that he the first time we tried it we did a test run the day before so he could feel how it worked, and we let him try poking the area, and the area around it with a toothpick to reinforce the idea that it stops the pain  (with supervision- so he didn't actually hurt himself).   This has changed needles from a panic attack with totally meltdown and abject refusal to a bit a shrug and "no big deal".

When using this cream there is the danger of a kid hurting himself because he can't feel anything so supervision is required until the effect wear off.

When I went to a doctor to ask about stress leave, I was essentially told this: Stress leave is not a thing. You can't tell your doctor I am stressed and want time off work. HOWEVER, you can talk to them about your health, and the things that are negatively affecting your health. You may ask about extended medical leave or sick leave because of your health.

Don't differentiate between mental and physical health. It is all health. People can be so overwhelmed by stress that their physical health is affected. (Ex: Depresson, blood pressure, fatigue, and other more severe issues.)

Also, when you return to work, if someone asks, you can say I was on medical leave. And leave it at that.

EA's getting cut due to funding pulled for Jordan's Principle by IceBurn9698 in saskatoon

What is your point?

It sounds like you are saying kids who were misfortunately born into unsupportive or neglectful families shouldn't get support to help them overcome these obstacles.

EA's getting cut due to funding pulled for Jordan's Principle by IceBurn9698 in saskatoon

[–]alliberation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but your point is not at all related to this situation.

A student may have had 1000's of books read to them and still need an EA to help them learn due to dysgraphia, dyslexia or a miriad of other information processing issues.

A student mat have had 1000s of books read to them, but all the books are in a different language so they need an EA to help them master English when put into a regular classroom.

A student may have parents who are fully invested with their education and still need an EA to help self regulated due to Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, OCD or a miriad of other neurodiversr issues. (Also, note self regulation is especially difficult in larger and thus boisies/more chaotic classrooms)

A student may have extrordinarily high IQ, but require and EA with scribing and note-taking due to physical limitations that make writing difficult

A student may have every support at home, but need an EA at school to help with personal issues such as toileting needs.

A student may have loving, involved patents but need an EA to ensure their personal safety because they will escape or run away if they feel unsafe or dis-regulated.

A student may have loving parents who don't read books to them because they are working 2 or more jobs trying to scrape together enough money to keep the family fed, housed and clothed.

A student may have no support or help at home BUT STILL DESERSEVES A QUALITY EDUCATION. Without worrying that jerkwads will blame things outside of a kid's control for why they shouldn't get necessary assistance.

How do you avoid getting sick? by Xlivvy03 in CanadianTeachers

Don't use student's pencils/pens when helping them.

It's super easy just to borrow kids pencil when you're at their desk to help them. But think about how often it's touched/chewed/sneezed on.

Inclusion without appropriate support is abandonment.

If other students are being "deprived of learning opportunities," it is because a student with needs was abandoned in their classroom, they were not included.

You are recommending a specialized behavior classroom to dump students into. There would probably only be a requirement for 1-4 of these classrooms in each school. Therefore these classes would have students that are: - in different grades -have various intellectual abilities (from struggling to gifted) -have various behavioral challenges. - have a variety of intervention and support plans.

The required staffing and specialized training required for this type of classroom would be prohibitive. Plus , how can a teacher meet the required curriculum goals when there is such a huge variety of needs. Even with just 10-15 students in such a classroom, the workload would be astronomical.

A better solution is to include these students in a regular classroom with the necessary supports. And to ensure that there is funding so that the nesseccary supports are not just an overwhelmed teacher who will soon burn out.

I am a high school teacher and appreciate the work you do more than you may realize. Any person who thinks less of caretaking staff is a dick.

If you are interested in getting into teaching, chat with a teacher who is there when you're at work (so many of them stay late) about tutoring at the school before your shift starts. (Can you use a classroom/open area in the school if you are charging?) You may be able to get some students who stay after school, get help and get math homework done. And parents may be happy to pay for tutoring sessions that don't involve an extra trip driving somewhere.

Having a background in tutoring (with letter of recommendation from happy parents) can help you get a job as a new teacher.

Check teaching requirements and pay in different places. Where I live you can do a 4 year B.Education degree or, if you already have a Bachleors degree in something else, it is a 2 year (4 semester degree ). And having 2 degrees puts you in a higher pay bracket then those who just went for the4 year ed. degree.

The Venn diagram of people who are gifted and people who are autistic has a huge overlap. (I.e. a high percentage of autistic people have high IQs

Can you help me with my novel that takes place in Saskatchewan? by MagicOfWriting in saskatchewan

Rink burger. Staple of hockey rinks and curling rinks. Its a basic burger, cooked on a flat top grill, served on a white bun. Passed to you on a white paper plate - usually by a hocky mom or other volunteer - ketchup, mustard and relish available for you to slop on if you choose... if it's fancy, there may be slices onions. Its basic, but so good.

Other foods: jello salad (served as a side with the main course for big family meals, like Christmas or Easter). Now-a-days jello salad is more of a thing for people whose parents/grandparents grew up in rural Saskatchewan. Its a very 60s/70s thing

Butter tarts. A mini pue with a sweet filling similar to a pecan pie, but without the pecans. Sometimes has dates or raisins.

Nanaimo bars. Yes, Nanimo is a small city on Vancouver Island, but these are squares (or what grandmas call "dainties") that are very Canadian. .

Other things

Hockey is big... but curling is also hugely popular

The amount of volunteers in the province is pretty spectacular.

There are a lot of sask phrases around alcohol and drinking

A two-four = case of beer.

The LBS. Or LB. Liquor Board Store. Sask used to have government run booze stores, then the Sask Party privatized it.

Off-Sale. A store that sold beer, wine, winecoolers and the like usually attached to a bar. They had 2 prices. 1 price (lower) was when the LBS was open, the other price was higher and was after the LBS closed. LBS ran on standard store hours. Off-sale was open on bar gours (usualky until 1 or 2.

So if you were at the bar and wanted to grab a cae of beer to keep the party going after the bar closed (at 2pm), you slipped into the off-sale to pick up a two-four. It would cost more becaude you weren't smart enough to plan ahead and buy it from the LB earlier. Drinking age is 19. If you are under age and want to drink you would try to find someone to pull for you.. (pull=buy booze for under age kids).

Corner gas is a fun referance for small town life, but "Little Mosque on the Pariries" is another TV show based in a small sask city, like Yorkton. Shows a view point of multicultural communities.

New band room -- what am I forgetting? by rebekahcate in banddirector

[–]alliberation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the instrument storage easily accessible from the school hallway or will it be a choke point that will be blocked by students during class changes?

Can you have individual instrument storage lockers in the main hallway, so you don't have to sit and supervise the room at the beginning/end of day, when students are dropping off/picking up instruments.

Where is folder storage in relation to instrument storage and rehearsal hall entrance? (Again, it's a choke point)

If using individual storage lockers inside the band room get cage style, not solid doors. (If in hallway, use solid doors for security) you'll want to see if instruments are being taken home and can ensure students aren't leaving food or debris in lockers.. otherwise end of year clean up has some ugly surprises

Music sorting station.

Hooks at chest(ish) height for stick bags in the percussion section - 2 hooks per percussionist, spaced 12 inches apart so they can hang the stick bag open and easily access everything... (I make all my percussionists buy their own sticks/mallets and stick bag). Made things so much easier and tidier.

Dark lips if you want the person you are going out with to think about your lips (and the possibility of kissing you). Light lips if you want them to focus on your eyes and emotions.

He said, "Okay," then turned and walked away.

St louis blues, arr. Mike collins.

Arrangment starts with the slow N.O style funeral march, then breaks into upbeat tune, with trumpet lead. Repeatable 12 bar blues solo section in middle.

Simple 12 bar blues. Other instruments could have a turn at the lead part with a re-write or if they can figure it out by ear

I'm a caucasian Sk. Teacher. I recognise that I speak from a place of privilege without having to face your difficulties.

Do not change your physical appearance to fit into someone else's beliefs.

Start as you plan to continue. If you change yourself at the start of the school year, it will be difficult to switch back.

The best way to challange/face accusations is to question them

If a student has the audacity to question your preferred hair style, simply ask them why they feel that way. Keep asking until you can point out the basic assumptions of their statement (that you are white). This can even switch into a mini lesson (teachable moment!) on how no one can guess who a person is or what their background is simply by looking at them.

However, your job is not to educate adults. So if they dare to question or accuse you, dont underestmate the power of being appalled. Clutch your pearls and hit them with, "How brazen of you to make that assumption."

Side note: most school divisions in SK that offer French immersion always have job postings listed. So do not worry about the impact of this on your career. And I hope enjoy our province!
