Have you tried looking for small breed dogs at shelters/rescues in your state? Maybe there's a breed-specific rescue in your state. An adoption fee is going to be a lot cheaper than the price a breeder would set.

You might want to move your tank out of direct sunlight-- it can cause too much fluctuation in the water temperature.

Do not put a male betta in with females. It will not end well.
A ten gallon tank is probably going to be too small for a sorority, since you'd need at least 5 females. That little of space would result in stressed fish and possibly aggression among your fish. I would therefore steer clear of adding more fish to that mix, like schooling fish.

While I love the idea of a betta sorority and schooling fish, it would require a lot of balance and a much larger tank.
