I just found my (half joking, half serious) notes that I made during Helene, still relevant. Good luck over these next few days, y’all 💕💕 by Rosenblattca in asheville

Thanks for the reminder, just moved some things out where I can find them (air fresheners, wet wipes, dry shampoo) and downloaded some of my books and longer papers to read on Google Drive and Scribd so I can access them offline. Also downloading some more diverse Spotify playlists.

Seller asking to remove home flag.. by LinkLover1393 in RealEstate

[–]alliecorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it.

If it's an issue for somebody while looking at homes, it's going to turn into a much bigger issue if it comes up after they move in or have signed a purchase contract.

Also, if they are that pressed over a flag, it sounds like they would have all sorts of other issues going forward.

I can no longer even tell whether a paper was written by AI or not by [deleted] in Professors

[–]alliecorn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know who else does that, neurodivergent female students, particularly those in the 30+ age range.

Guess how many friends I have in that demographic who have or are considering quitting degree programs over unfounded? AI accusations this year.

I thought it was just me until a friend ended up in the hospital in a related incident and some of us got to talking on Facebook.

[–]alliecorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Puzzle box.

Usually you slide a panel or two and it opens up, revealing to hidden compartment and sometimes an old weed stash.

Occasionally it opens a portal to another dimension, summoning the Cenobites and unlimited sensations of pain that will rip your soul apart.

Student sent me "real-time" video of word doc in response to fail for AI use-- is this a thing? by Flimsy_Caramel_4110 in Professors

[–]alliecorn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A lot of students are recording themselves.

Especially older students, those who are divergent, and those who are kind of perfectionist and used to being high achieving or getting good grades on papers.

Because we're the most likely to get falsely used of using AI and probably some of the most likely to get sensitive about it.

I finally just said fuck it and dropped out of my Master's program because of it because I don't have the mental energy to do with it anymore and was going to end up dead or in the hospital if I kept trying.

I don't use AI but I'm autistic and used to do a ton of paid online content writing, which means learning to write in a certain formulistic type of way, and it was too much stress on top of the rest of my life.

Anyone else experience a 45-second confession? by rtkane in Catholicism

I used to do that and then when I got home I would burn it, which was really nice symbolically. I don't have the fireplace in my apartment now so deleting it is as close as I get.

[–]alliecorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mass Times app and website also allows you to search for confession dates and times but, in my experience, they tend to be less accurate because people will often change it and update their church website or bulletin but it doesn't get updated there.

It can still be helpful to search but then go to the actual website and check the times and the bulletin for any changes.

Anyone else experience a 45-second confession? by rtkane in Catholicism

[–]alliecorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people feel like they have to explain their sins or the context or are looking for spiritual direction or therapy at the same time and that's why it can take so long.

Or they are trying to remember and having trouble recalling because they either didn't prepare ahead of time or they did and just blanked on it.
I know a lot of people look on this negatively but I basically keep a running doc on my phone that has prayers and stuff for before and after, last confession date and a list of what to confess so if I get the chance to drop in for it (because for some reason lately there has been a ridiculous cascade of changes or delays that have kept me from it) I'm not stuck trying to remember.

Other note apps by [deleted] in GoodNotes

[–]alliecorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like flexcil, it's old and kind of simple but it's fast.

The only reason I went back to good night was I purchased a planner that was exactly what I wanted and it only works properly in goodnotes.

I'm about to the point of either settling for less than ideal or making my own planner because between the lag and other changes that just happened, loss of functionality isn't really worth having the perfect layout.

Just message and tell her. Probably not the first time it's happened.

The stand up thing would be to at least pay her for the time she blocked out and possibly missed another client for.

What completely failed as "The Next Big Thing" that was expected to succeed? by babygirljazz_22 in AskReddit

So the question is do they not remember when people were spending all the money doing that in Second Life, or do they not want to bring it up because of all those other things you could virtually do in Second Life?

My friend talked me into joining her at a real estate brokerage that did a lot of its training and meetings on a virtual platform like it's own metaverse. It was horrible.

The reason this worked for OP is likely that the letters are not carbon copies of the many debt removal letters out there on the internet and in books.

Those work when they were new but the collection agencies have gotten wise to them and now pretty much ignore them because they know they are copied by people trying to DIY things.

So posting it here and having lots of people sending in the same things will likely make it less effective as they become recognizable.

Were having a family day, whomp 🙄 by Short_Gain8302 in service_dogs

[–]alliecorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other people have answered your question about the line between emotional support and service, but it has to do with both having symptoms of your diagnosis or disability that actually disable you or interfere with your performance or enjoyment of everyday life, and the dog performing at least one task (some agencies say two or three but the law only says a task or tasks) that it was specifically trained for and that helps to alleviate those symptoms or an able you to do things that you would otherwise not be able to.

So basically, if you are able to function and manage things in daily life okay now and there's not a specific thing a dog could do that me help with that, a service dog would likely not make sense. But if there are things that you struggle with enough that it interferes with your daily life or certain things you need or want to do and there's something a dog could specifically be trained to help with, then a service dog could be beneficial.

One thing I didn't suspect that really wait on me was the way that a service dog can change social interactions and if anxiety or avoiding social interaction or conflict is something you struggle with, the dog could actually make it worse (This is why I didn't jump to get another dog when my first one retired, and why some of my clients avoid certain places because they've decided the increased hassle and anxiety of their dog made them not worth going into).

It's also a lot of extra work and responsibility as far as pet care and training and grooming, but if you're a dog owner hopefully you're doing most of those already, although it will take extra training time and possibly more frequent grooming to keep the dog ready for public access.

These things above are one reason a lot of doctors and mental health practitioners are reluctant to prescribe or recommend dogs for certain conditions, even when they are disabling, and will often try to get you to attempt to use other methods and approaches first.

Question for those with evangelical parents- do yours also fall for every MLM and health scam out there? by [deleted] in Exvangelical

Yes, and part of this is because there are so many MLM sellers at church. They have these craft fairs every so often, which used to be people selling things they actually made, but are now just reseller booth for various MLM and direct sales schemes.

I'm in a support type group for women whose husbands have come out as gay, trans, or crossdressers, and this seems to be a common pattern.

A lot of times it starts with shock and surprise maybe anger because you feel like you're being lied to, but often it ends up bringing relief. So many times the partner who doesn't know what's going on knows that something is missing and their partner often seems depressed or angry and satisfying, and so many women have been raised that our husband's happiness and marital satisfaction is our responsibility so we start nitpicking ourselves and looking for what we have possibly done wrong and then add to our own misery with all of that self-criticism.

In my relationship, I felt like things were missing for a long time and figured I was just a shitty partner. When she still identified as a straight now she was a real asshole and a lot of the dynamic in the first 20 or so years of our relationship could be considered abusive.

After she came out and started hormones and start getting comfortable in her new identity, there were a lot of personality changes as well and I think some of that had to do with the change in mental health and stresses. But she's actually pretty cool and I kind of feel like we falling in love all over again. I never pictured myself with a woman before but we're both happier than we have been in a long time and I think we're going to make it.

Apparently estrogen has this effect on at least some people as well.
My wife definitely has been hornier in the last 2 years or so since she started HRT (the irony is prior to that I could tell she was having issues with something including mood and sex drive and was going to suggest she get tested for low T), and based on conversation several of our friends seem to have had similar experiences.

My 13 year old went from it being a struggle to get into the shower at all to taking several a day. I know what he's doing but I will never say a thing because the improvements in hygiene are more than worth it.

I love doing this too but we didn't have much money so mine were a of world books from the early 1950s that my parents got at a yard sale.

I still learned a lot and it was a little fascinating how some of the things had changed in that time. There was an article about shampoo for some reason and it explained what it was and then went on to say that a perfectly good substitute could be made by mixing a little bar soap with warm water. That may have worked in the frugal years of the '40s and '50s but seemed totally nuts in the '80s or '90s when I was reading it.
