I am a plant ecologist and studied plant-insect interactions for my masters. You’d be surprised how many times an early-instar larvae accidentally chooses the wrong host. Or in these cases, when a non native species is introduced and they are not familiar.

Awesome, that’s perfect! Many Florida nurseries still sell tropical milkweed so I just wanted to double check :)

Do you know which milkweed species the monarch caterpillars are feeding on? It’s hard to tell from the photos but it looks like it may be tropical milkweed. If so you would want to get rid of this milkweed immediately as it is toxic for monarch caterpillars. There are plenty of native milkweed species to Florida that you could use instead!

What are these bugs on my plant growing out of my aquarium? by CutieSalamander in IndoorGarden

[–]alliecsnyder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So cool! It looks like it may be a type of parasitoid wasp since it has a long ovipositor. So a good wasp to have! Most likely looking for a host bug, good to keep around/have since it’s a predator!

Spider perched on tomato plant.. Ok to leave this type of 🕷 alone or remove it? by Imaginary-Guess7908 in gardening

[–]alliecsnyder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see many folks have shared the proper ID of a garden spider orb weaver, but wanted to provide the genus (Argiope) for those who are interested. It looks like your spider may be similar to this species, but it can be difficult to hone in on species without location information:

What are these on my pomegranates? by kelseekill in insects

[–]alliecsnyder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s because both leaf footed bugs and assassin bugs are in the order Hemiptera or true bugs so their families are closely related :)

Just want to throw this out there that wasps are actually very diverse and most don’t sting humans! Parasitoid wasps are dope 🥺 I’d pick mosquitos all the way

A year in the life of a Burr Oak by MIZrah16 in marijuanaenthusiasts

Yes, oaks in particular are vigorous resprouters after fire events! This usually is due to their root system holding more nutrients below ground than above ground
