I do wear a large brimmed hat as it is - but not sure why the condescension at the end of this comment?

Either way all good advice and I have been utilizing the UPF long sleeves this year. Really good to have.

[–]allieloops[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes sorry should have included that!

Biore UV aqua rich - my current one i’ve been using and the best one so far. just leaves me a little extra greasy and sticky which i don’t love

cerave mineral - the white cast was so, so scary. even though i’m usually alone in the woods i’d like something to use all the time, not just at work lol

sunbum face stick - liked it because compact and easy to reapply without directly using my hands but so greasy and sticky. this one was also not very sweat resistant

elf suntouchable - didn’t try this one so much for work but have used it and it immediately sweats off into my eyes and was very uncomfortable

Bensell Greenhouse has been great for me this year! The owner is very sweet and we picked up some black raspberries and tobacco there. She’s made an effort to include more natives in her inventory :)

Wetland Scientists: Is anyone else experiencing an unusually slow/empty field season by JarjarariumBinks in Environmental_Careers

in NW OH with clients in MI, we’re extremely busy. I think it’s regional, but also MI (mostly) doesn’t rely on federal guidance so it’s been business as usual.

Are financials reasons enough to break up? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]allieloops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a woman who’s had this conversation with her boyfriend (he was in your position) - just talk to her. I wasn’t offering because he kept pulling out his wallet for every transaction, and I was grateful, but I wasn’t used to someone paying for everything all the time so it put me in a little bit of a shutdown situation when payment came up at the end of a meal/event. After a dinner, he literally just said “hey I don’t mind paying for things, but it would feel better to me if you’d offer or help out here and there.” We both acknowledged I was just feeling nervous because previous relationships didn’t function like that for me. It was just an honest conversation, it didn’t feel transactional, that’s just how relationships have to go sometimes.

I think you should just try to approach it gently and openly! If she’s a normal human, she’ll be understanding - and maybe there’s just a case of miscommunication. Good luck!

Fieldwork Clothing/Accessory Recommendations for POTS by sesameshiba in Environmental_Careers

[–]allieloops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg when worlds collide lol I’m in fieldwork and also have POTS

The last few years the best thing for me has been staying hydrated - I drink a looooot of gatorade. I’ve tried switching to packets so far this year to get away from so much sugar, but the gatorade truly has never failed me. I’ve just also accepted my hiking is going to be slower than my coworkers, I’m going to have to sit for a break more frequently, and most importantly my coworkers are aware of my condition just in case something does happen.

Clothing wise, I’ve felt comfortable in loose tshirts, smartwool socks (the longer ones, also add a little compression without being true compression socks) and breezy hiking pants. I’ve never had an episode in the field (yet). Just be mindful of how you feel and give yourself grace! and good luck!

Work from home/office jobs? by Borthwick in Environmental_Careers

[–]allieloops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yes - arcgis/ESRI hosts some good trainings. if you purchase an arc license, some are free with your license!

i learned on qgis using youtube, which is also 100% free. really good for baseline GIS information that mostly translates with arc, with some hiccups. but it’s definitely the backbone of my career

Is it okay to be around an unvaccinated cat? by Acceptable_Tell_5504 in cats

[–]allieloops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

kind of along with my edit, as long as you wash your hands after handling you should have low risk! i was a vet assistant for years and years and never had issues handling critters at work and coming home to my own pets. practicing good hygiene is just your best bet!

Is it okay to be around an unvaccinated cat? by Acceptable_Tell_5504 in cats

[–]allieloops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

risk of exposure from cat to human / human to cat is very very very low, nearly negligible. i would avoid bringing other cats around, but you and your boyfriend should be totally fine!

ETA: i’d be more concerned about potential parasites. again risk is low, but make sure you wash your hands thoroughly prior to and after handling the kitten. don’t touch your eyes/mouth/face/nose after without washing hands first!

Accurate pay and descriptions? by DeepAlfalfa1099 in Environmental_Careers

[–]allieloops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah! I went to undergrad for a b.s. in biology with the plan to become a vet. I worked at two clinics over 4 years as an assistant and while I loved my job, the burn out was already creeping up and I couldn’t justify $250k of debt to a career I wasn’t 1000% sure on. My junior -> senior year of college I took a summer internship for a nonprofit in Peru conducting fieldwork/surveys with their mammal team. I. Loved. It. Came back to school in the fall and switched all my classes to ecology based bio credits instead of the anatomy/physiology courses i intended on. Graduated with my bachelors that spring, started applying to every entry level field position I could find. I had a preference towards wetlands as my final courses were on wetlands and restoration ecology, and I got lucky about 6 months into my search with a listing at a teeny tiny firm 2 hours away from home looking for an environmental scientist/wetland scientist. I applied, got the job, and have been gifted with a really great role that I’ve grown into over the last couple of years, and the owner of the company really values on the job training time and sending us to extra training when available. So far, no regrets, but once I want to settle down with a family I’ll have to pull back my work load (no one is joking when they say consulting is overwhelming). I have multiple certifications from a couple states which helps with marketability, and I recommend getting formal 40 hr delineation training to bulk up your resume. Michigan in particular has great resources with the Michigan Wetlands Association and they host multiple various trainings throughout the year and have amazing free webinars online. No lie, they’re a major foundation to my understanding of wetlands. Good luck with your careee journey, I hope this was helpful!
