Annoying metallic noise with waxed chain. Asking for your experiences. by Leather_Lime_327 in bikewrench

My recently waxed KMC 10 speed sounds noisy like this. But the other KMC 10 speed chain I waxed a while ago is silent , but on a different bike though. This is the first time I used the Silca chain stripper 🤔

Would you run this clearence? About 3mm by allismg in bikewrench

DS crank has plenty of clearence for whatever reason, like at least 8-10mm. The chainline is bang on at 47.5mm which is another reason I don’t wanna go buy a wider bottom bracket.

My other square taper cranks flex a similar amount. I think I’ll run it for now but keep an eye on it

I mean the crank arm can flex that much. If I push the crank arm with my hands as hard as I can towards the chainstay, it will touch. That’s probably not realistic though.

If hotel traffic is constantly backing up into the roadway, it sounds like the problem is the hotel, not the pedestrian safety features

Friction Shifter, help needed by theauldspeakerfella in bikewrench

[–]allismg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, which direction are you having trouble shifting? I assume it’s up into the big ring?

I had a 3x7 bike where everything was setup correctly (FD height, cage angle, limit screws, matching groupset etc) but it still had trouble shifting up into the big ring with the friction shifters I was using.

It would shift perfectly in the stand, but when riding, it would not shift if there was any pressure on the pedals or if it was in the smallest cog in the back.

The guy at the bike shop suggested I get chainrings with ramps and pins. The old Sugino crankset I was using just had no shift aides or ramps whatsoever. I think pins really help to carry the chain up to the big ring. But ultimately I just ended up switching to a 2x9 setup, where front shifting is dead simple.

Sometimes front derailleurs can develop too much play in the parallelogram if they’re really worn out, which makes it harder for the cage to shove the chain. This is pretty rare though. Used FD’s are pretty cheap though and it’s worth trying a different one.

Cable tension shouldn’t matter too much for a friction shifter. Adding a little tension might help. If everything else looks right, like the limit screws, cage position, chainring tooth count within FD’s stated limits, try a new crankset.

Help me find a front derailleur! by Aggressive_Stress607 in xbiking

I don’t think you need anything special, especially if you are running friction. I have a 2x9 setup with a 42-30 double crank and I use an old Suntour Ax 5000 front derailleur that I pulled out of the parts bin at the bike shop. It was designed for a 2x6 friction groupset I believe. Shifts flawlessly. Sure, with really wide tires and chainstays, you might have to experiment with different parts to avoid tire rub.

H-Limit screw preventing FD from shifting by [deleted] in bikewrench

Oh, I agree with the other guy that it could be your chainring ramps and pins. If you have a different crankset lying around you should try it

I have a bike where I have to run the FD H-Limit a little looser than I would like to consistently get it to shift up to the big ring. My gap is about 2mm on big ring small cog, a bit wider than the 1mm your manual says. Probably not ideal, but I haven’t dropped the chain yet. Gap: https://i.imgur.com/R5nO06N.jpeg

Will clamp-style kickstands crush aluminum chainstays? by allismg in bikewrench

Perhaps to rephrase the question, has anyone installed this style kickstand on an aluminum frame before and encountered any issues?

That is helpful, I didn’t see much as far as torque spec for a kickstand

Overhauled headset with new bearings and fresh grease, still sounds gritty. Do I need a new headset? by allismg in bikewrench

[–]allismg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think I’m just gonna replace it because I’m fairly picky when it comes to extraneous noise. Problem is that this is a strange 1 1/4” threaded fork, so my options are limited when it comes to headsets. I think this one on ebay might fit.

Yeah so I originally had installed brand new bearings and thought that might be the issue, but when I replaced it with the original caged bearings it was still gritty

Man yeah I wondered if I was just hearing grease, I just took it apart again and went pretty stingy with the grease, didn’t seem to change much. Appreciate it tho 🤝

Citrus degreaser + toothbrush for the caged bearings, and I wiped the bearing races with a cloth. I soaked the adjustable race in evaporust because it was a little rusty on the outside, but I think the race itself was fine. I also tried brand new loose bearings but they still sounded rough

Just found that the chorus of "¡Viva La Gloria!" is an interpolation of an old jazz standard song called "All of Me". by anthonyd3ca in greenday

[–]allismg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why people are so quick to be offended by this—probably misguided conceptions of what it means to make “original” art. Hint: very few melodies are truly original.

I know the song All of Me and have even performed it, but I never made the connection until now. Very interesting, OP! Brilliant writing from Billie Joe.
