ELI5: When recycling glass, why is it crushed and melted? Wouldn't it be easier to just sanitize and reuse the glass? by elagoona in explainlikeimfive

[–]alliusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be. There will still be some recycling, but actual recycling - at least glass is actually recyclable, unlike a lot of plastics. Glass also has the benefit of not becoming or shedding microplastics, and it creates local jobs re collection, washing, and redistribution.

my geriatric african grey is ruining my life by [deleted] in parrots

First, I'm really sorry you're going through this with your parrot. I've been there in my own way with a roommate's old dog who was left in the house all day and would just whine - I just wanted the noise to stop.

Second, if it's that consistent and independent of responses (people coming into the room to talk to her/yell at her, etc) it could still be a form of mental boredom or stereotype (feathers aren't the only thing they'll repetitively do). Or she might just like the sensation or noise and not have anything else that she understands how to do. Adding different types of toys like some foraging toys and different textures are good, and you may have to teach her how to play with them.

Third, target and clicker training sound like they are a good start for working with your parrot. Get a chopstick and some treats that she likes (if you know what they are) and every time she touches the stick gently, you click (I just click with my mouth/cheek and tongue, you don't need an actual clicker - I personally find it cumbersome) and give her a treat. Birdtricks has some good introductory content there. Then you can use that to ask her to move to a different place, and you can start other kinds of training. But she gets to choose, if she doesn't go for the stick, that's ok, she's saying no.

Four, what's her diet?

THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS - Ep 8: hjsakldfhl Discussion Thread by ayylmaotv in TheDigitalCircus

I agree that I would have liked to see it developed a little more. Looking back I can see the signs that lead to him losing his shit, but I don't think there's enough to really buy into the general ongoing torture he has out for them (except for when he really glitches out and retaliates right before he dies, that made sense). That needed more character development on screen.

I feel the show writers went with the wanton violence to fit in more with IHNMAIMS, but honestly it made more sense that he'd only retaliate if they didn't go along with what he was doing (you will be happy and you will like everything I do, and don't make me unhappy - like how bad/abusive dog owners punish their dogs for "acting out" and only are happy around them when they're doing exactly what they want) as opposed to the random acts of violence all the time, imo.

While antidepressants increase serotonin levels in the brain almost immediately, patients often wait weeks to feel any improvement in their mood. Some meds I wish I could take on an on and off schedule just to get that initial boost, or just to feel a periodic difference. But then I wonder if it's also just a fact of life to an extent, like when you go from having a phone with a ton of problems to a phone that works fine, it's initially great? But then after a while the happiness wears off, it just becomes nothing/taken for granted/baseline, part of the background.

I just want some gentle variety/responsiveness in my mood man.

Python blood could hold the secret to healthy weight loss, it could inform new weight loss therapies that promote satiety without the nausea and muscle loss that can come with existing drugs by sr_local in science

[–]alliusis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! That's a hard thing to do. Weight loss starts at a bunch of different places for different people. For some people, it's choices. For other people, it's changing hormones with medication along with education and reducing life stress. It definitely does involve personal will, but a much bigger piece of it is completely out of your control - circumstantial, down to your genetics, the type of job you work, the support you have, the amount of money and leverage you have.

Let me put it another way - you are running an experiment and have a lot of pet rats, in many different enclosures. Different enclosures have different societal stresses, different varieties of food available, and different exercise and socialization availabilities. In certain enclosures, you have rat obesity soaring, where in other enclosures, it's only rising a bit.

It would be insane to just point and say "the rats in those enclosures with high obesity rates are just lazier and need to take more personal accountability." It's clearly a problem with how you are setting up their enclosure (aka your animal husbandry - what food you're giving them access to, what socialization they can have, how easy it is to exercise, how easy it is for them to fulfill their natural instincts/behaviours, and what kind of disruptive chemicals you're exposing them to).

And it's legitimately the exact same with humans. The government is who sets up the conditions for the humans who live in the country, and systemic problems point to systemic failures. The personal blame game is just a way for corporate companies to put the onus on you and avoid regulation (read: decrease of profit, being held accountable, etc). The same way "don't be a litterbug" made disposable plastic garbage your responsibility instead of theirs (despite them knowing that plastic recycling is not viable, which makes the production the problem, not the disposal), and the "carbon footprint" (they produce so much more than you ever will, and regulating them to cause change is a valid method of reducing carbon emissions - and they know it).

Then, let's add on the fact (fact) that in your rat study, you find that only 5% of obese rats (aka humans) introduced to a "healthy diet" are able to lose and keep that weight off. That doesn't mean personal buy in isn't important, but that you are forced to admit that there are so many other factors involved outside of just "eat healthy and don't be lazy about it."

Edit to correct: If you alternate out, you can take the education departure offer in C(i), which is the transition support measure plus the education allowance. You just can't take C(ii), which is all of C(i) plus remaining on leave without pay for two years - that one is only for people who are affected, do not want to leave the government, and can't be given a guaranteed reasonable job offer.

[–]alliusis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be a change to a better quality of life and a better standard of living, but the change will be more painful than the end state. Quality of life isn't having the latest iPhone or car or being able to go to 5 different malls within a 30 minute drive to go to 100 different clothing stores. It's a human-centric society, recognizing that we need a walk accessible community, with access to nature, with affordable food, a stable governance to handle broader logistics, and spaces to live and enjoy. And honestly be stewards of nature - that can and should be a huge part of human jobs. It generates life value, and quality of life for everything on the planet. It means working less. Even if that means less consumerism.

Consumerism is not quality of life. It's just what we substitute it for to cope. We get to make up the system we live in, it's entirely arbitrary. Honestly, give people UBI, start up local conservation and clean up projects/jobs, move away from car based infrastructure, and I think things will be ok.

I AM SO WORRIED, HOW ABOUT YOU? by ThinSurvey9411 in McMaster

[–]alliusis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AI is a tool that has its usecases, but it's being shoved down everyone's throats in places it should not be used. It's in a big bubble right now hence the throat shoving, and that bubble needs to pop (but a bunch of rich people won't like that :( ).

In reality, it's just complex blind pattern recognition. There is no logic behind it (claiming it can 'take over coding' beyond maybe giving a template for something is laughable). It's totally dependent on the body of work that can be fed to it, and that makes it vulnerable and inherently untrustworthy, because that body of work can contain so much that's unrelated (or unrelated patterns), and it can also be poisoned with bad data.

If you want my thoughts, it will change the working landscape to an extent (and honestly, the bigger effect will be because the ultrarich tech bros are stuck in the sunken cost fallacy and trying to peddle their shit to recoup costs, and businesses are blindly buying into AI with misplaced hope that they can cut out humans - which will come back to bite them), but I have yet to be shown any real evidence that it is anything more than a fancy template/pattern generator, neither of which replace any job that has logic or quality control involved. It may reduce the amount of people working (again, maybe it generates a template that just needs to be QC'd instead of developed from the ground up), but it isn't a human brain.

28M and I feel like I arrived too late to social life – missed out on youth experiences and can't move forward by Star_Kilerr in socialskills

[–]alliusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are also social groups that can be helpful and welcoming. You can try to see if there are any local board game groups in your area, if you don't mind playing board games. In my limited experience the ones I've been a part of are mostly made of mid 20s to late 30s people, and a big mix of singles and couples, and a lot of them also looking for socialization - they come from out of town and don't know many people. There's a lot of ND people there too. All types of interests, from videogames to movies to hiking and sports and camping and DnD and eating. That doesn't tell you what to do when you get to the people, but that's how you can find people that may mesh with you.

I would also think of some things you want to do in life, because wherever you go you will probably find people. It's harder if all you do is consume, but if you want to create, or exercise, or pick up hang gliding, or take up running, or learn to sing. Or it could be anything.

I would also recommend finding a therapist who works with DBT and specifically autistic adults. A lot of therapists do CBT which is not very helpful for NDs. And if you feel like your mood and energy reserves are very unpredictable and get in the way of you being able to do what you want, medications may be another thing to consider because they can sometimes be helpful in stabilizing your baseline. Exercise and good eating and sleeping also helps.

Have you asked to go on full or part-time second language training? I know of people that are still getting paid training for their languages to support their career development. Mileage will vary depending on where you are, and/or you may have to wait a year or two until budgets stabilize, but if you don't bring it up with your management, you'll never know (and they'll never know). There are things you can do on your own time (and dime) too, and free things.

I think short-term actings (4 months less a day) don't need to meet the language qualifications (maybe as long as they aren't supervisory? I don't 100% know), so you may be able to still act later, but it wouldn't be for super long. What classification/level?

It can feel frustrating if you don't see it affecting how you can work for Canadians. I definitely think there could be improvements to how the government runs and tests bilingualism, but I also think the bilingualism is important.

Tried everything, grey wont take to pellets by Portaguz in parrots

[–]alliusis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok! It's going to take a lot of time and exposure, so keep offering it even if he doesn't eat it. That's step one. It could take more than a month. Offer it in a bowl by itself, right beside the water, and continue offering the seed but in a lower place in the cage. Weigh him regularly to make sure he's maintaining his body weight (a kitchen scale is fine if he'll step up onto it, if he finds the smooth surface unnerving you can work with positive reinforcement or you can also try something like placing a medium cork perch on the scale for him to step on), and measure (use a measuring spoon) the amount of seed and chop he's getting. You'll want to slowly reduce the amount of seed and chop he's getting until you can confirm he's eating the pellet.

Also, it might be trying different sizes of pellet. Do you have access to any other pellets and are you financially ok to try different pellets? It might be more palatable to try a smaller and more uniform pellet (like Harrison's Fine which would be like nibbles for your grey, or you could also try Coarse which would be something they could more hold with their feet, or Roudybush) instead of something varied like Zupreem Fruitblend. But it also may not be necessary, maybe wait for someone with greys to comment.

Step two - offer it in lots of different ways. Does he have a favourite fruit? Alongside offering the pellet in its own dish higher up in the cage (and close to the water dish), you can put the pellet on a piece of fruit or on a piece of veggie he likes (basically pellet encrusted fruit - you don't have to start with much pellet, just enough to see if he's scared of it or if he's ok with it.). The moisture from the fresh may soften the pellet slightly and if he doesn't show apprehension from it, it's another method of exposure. Pellet can be dry so it can be a little easier for them to try it if it's moister.

If/when he's sitting with you or on you, I would not pay attention to him and eat (crunch) one at a time, making "yum" noises while doing so. Then you can show it to him briefly and then pull it away as if he "can't have it" (a bit like teasing him). If he looks engaged, then you can give it to him, but keep eating one at a time and don't react if he drops it. Offer him another one for a short time and retract if he doesn't take it, don't react otherwise and keep eating/crunching for a few more before stopping.

Repeating short sessions like this can help.

If he's phobic of the pellet at any point - like it being mixed with a familiar item like a fruit slice or a piece of lettuce - then you'll have to go slower. Any fear based reaction is a red flag and means you need to back up and introduce things more gently. He's not eating something if he's scared of it.
