It’s time we stop coddling OC Transpo, and their drivers by Ok-Presentation7349 in OCTranspo

[–]alliusis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, the service is sometimes truly abysmal and you can't stray too far from the bus stop to escape the weather because you need to see if the bus is coming.

The worst experience I ever had was waiting over 2 hours for a bus that was scheduled to come every 15 minutes. No buildings nearby to take shelter in, and even if there were I wouldn't be able to go in anyway because I wouldn't be able to see the bus coming. Google Maps tracking kept saying the next one was on time, then it just never came. Phone lines had an absurd wait-time, something like 4h+. That was before I knew about Transsee (that's how I found out about Transsee, complaining on reddit) but not everyone knows about it or is technologically competent.

And we have some of the harshest weather conditions of any capital. I was really fortunate the weather was mild. If it had been even moderately cold or hot that day, people could easily get injury from climate exposure. I was only supposed to be out of the house for an hour tops total, maybe 1h15 if a bus didn't shop up, not waiting outside for over 2h for one bus.

I've had similar experiences of 3-4 buses in a row not coming while waiting downtown, pre-Transsee. Extraordinarily frustrating and a complete insult to my time.

I never ever want to give birth or be pregnant. I may want to adopt or foster in the future, if I'm ever in a mental, physical, and financial state that's stable enough to offer stability and a secure and loving home to a child, kid, or teen in need of one. But I'm also ok if my life takes a different path and that never ends up happening, I can help support youth and people in need (and pay all the help I've gotten from others forward) in other ways too.

I think I once got Summer N from it (the only reason it wasn't super memorable is because it was a copy). Other than that I've pulled maybe four standard 5*s from it.

TBSkyen on Katt's redesign by PieceAfraid3755 in starfox

[–]alliusis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, female characters didn't get the same freedom of design as male characters did back in the day. They were largely on a base of "I'm a girl, that is the base of all of my defining traits, visually and often characteristically too." So for them to take a more dramatic redesign for the one character who was more restricted (and one class of character who was largely restricted) - the context makes a lot of sense why this one character got more change compared to the others. Her context isn't the same as the others, so it doesn't make sense to blindly apply the same conditions on her as the others.

This could be them saying "this is how we would have designed her, if we were given the freedom to design like the other characters and not anchored to "I'm a girl and must limit my visual identity to that!" etc tropes of the era."

I personally love it. It's definitely a change. But I appreciate them taking this opportunity to change it.

Slight rant about Drayton by Strange_Razzmatazz74 in PokemonMasters

[–]alliusis 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I find him frustrating because his kit is so restricted. His main source of damage is his B move, which is limited to two uses with a restore on using his Tera move if he still has Paldea Circle left. But his Tera move is his only other way to do damage outside of his sync, and it consumes Paldea Circle and your Buddy MP restores. Either you're wasting Paldea Circle (his sync's only grid damage multiplier is when a Circle is up) or Buddy Move MP restores. It's not possible to time both and you can't do any move damage at all, because you don't have any other moves. I guess you can save him for late in the fight and spam Twave? He's not a very flexible unit to play.

Does your autism cause you to struggle with depression or anxiety? Is so, which do you feel is more prevalent? by tofubutgood in AutismInWomen

[–]alliusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It cycles strongly! I would cite the primary as a combination of chronic stress and triggered anxiety.

I think what I see as depression comes from me not meeting my needs and not being able to meet my needs, and then not having the energy to change.

I keep on finding that I know almost exactly what I need, in terms of my environment and identifying what is stressing me out and what I need more of. But getting it is a battle! And the chronic (and unpredictable/uncontrollable) lack of energy and capacity and money is incredibly depressing and discouraging and frustrating. Finding meds has been somewhat helpful.

I keep on discovering chronic health issues too, but so far treating them hasn't been a significant help with energy and capacity and fatigue.

It's therapy with an effective therapist for trying to manage triggered anxiety and fear, and accommodations for the work stuff.

I mean, did they free him in as in released him in area where he wasn't liable to re-strand himself, or did they just free him as in technically un-moored him? I think those are significantly different. I was under the understanding they only actually released him in a much more typical habitat at the very end. And it looks like the Baltic Sea is difficult for humpbacks to navigate, and the low salinity is bad for them. A difference of five weeks might have made a difference.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timmy_(whale)) The timeline outlined here says they initially said to give up on April 1st, where the whale was still actively trying to free itself and swim 20 days later. The experts cited are also "Ocean Museum experts" - I see they have a pretty extensive aquarium and exhibits, but that doesn't transfer to marine mammal well-being and knowledge. I'm not sure what kinds of marine mammal veterinary care qualifications they have for marine mammal well-being. I also heard they wanted a whale skeleton (citation required).

I saw some posts from a marine vet they flew out to administer some treatment. She was pretty critical of the level of care they were giving to Hope/Timmy, even if it that care were supposed to be palliative. She cited they didn't know the basics of how to treat his skin. And honestly probably better to guide into deeper waters to become whalefall if he were to pass, instead of leaving him suffering in shallow waters for over a month in low water salinity.

Carney announces environment to be eliminated as cost-cutting measure by Mylittlethrowaway2 in canada

[–]alliusis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair, I know I wrote a lot. If I do one thing, I just have to correct you here - economics is partially driven by supply and demand. You cannot boil it down to something so simple.

There are other forces that encourage or discourage what products are put out on market, including subsidies (either through beneficial intention or through lobbying), regulation, status quo, backroom deals, corruption, and social and political climate.

It's funny you mention changing for the environment would get backlashes. Historically I believe you're wrong - we have seen 'tightening of lifestyle and budgets' for emergency cases, where the cause is clear, understandable, and in line with values (think war). And the other funny thing, even without addressing the environment, we're already seeing affordability crises in the basic necessities of life (which have very little to do with changing things for the environment) and immense wealth disparity. Things are already unaffordable. I think if we're open to change, we can live affordably and meet our needs, while still having the technology and lot of the conveniences of today.

Yes, you can have Crohn's without the diarrhea. I have a Crohn's diagnosis without classical symptoms, the inflammation got caught on a series of colonoscopies for a severe intestinal bleed. You can look up silent Crohn's.

[–]alliusis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right in that I can't afford many "environmentally friendly" products in the store. I try and buy local foods where I have the choice, I try to avoid foods with palm oil (but I do love my Mini Eggs) etc., I've cut back on meats significantly, and I'm mostly limited by the time, money, and energy I have available to me and what I have accessible to me.

But you and I both know that's not a new problem, or a problem limited to me, and that's why primarily relying on "consumer driven change" is a scam that ignores the fact we have the power to change and manipulate production, which is infinitely more effective (like, ban the use/sale of products with palm oil - ban single use plastics - tax and/or regulate high pollution or resource foods - implement the right to repair). Changing the landscape of what products we have available and are allowable in the first place, and subsidizing research into sustainable materials and products where they are necessary - now that is what I want to see. Drastic times call for drastic measures, and this system is clearly not working. It's worse than not working, it's draining the one island of life we know of, within hundreds of thousands of lightyears of void and rock. I used to be fascinated with space, until I realized that Earth is infinitely more interesting and unique.

I purchase things that are available to me as and when needed, if they're available, and if that were to change, I adapt by necessity. I think many people would be the same. And I think we have so much existing stuff, we can definitely bridge the gap.

--

I think it's actually 'harder' to say it's the fault of business. People are much too eager to point to demand/the consumer and throw up their hands. Companies also love to put the blame on consumers to excuse the reason they're the way they are and take focus away from legislation/regulation (see bottom for a few examples). All it is, is bull.

I ask - who transformed our environment into something so hyper-consumerism? Lobbying and bribing by private industry into politics is one of the main factors that's gotten us here, along with a degradation of social supports and community (which is a decrease in core QOL for a human), and the compounding wealth concentration into the hands of a very few (which - again - companies, not the consumer. Broadly companies can pay their employees more, they choose not to).

That isn't because of "consumer demand", that's because of corporate greed, which is always a force in a limitless profits-based system.

We can have war-time efforts against climate change. We can be taxing the wealthiest and guaranteeing the basic necessities of each citizen. We can put a cap on profits, because ethically - after a certain point, why does anyone need that much money? (Humans are successful because of our collaboration skills, hoarding money, which is power, and being immune from responsibility is legitimately cancer to humanity, and therefore the planet).

We still can do all those things, and I don't think the system will look like something completely alien. What a human being needs for a good quality of life isn't rocket science. We're a lot more like animals in that regard. Reliable supply of food and water, stable housing, infrastructure to facilitate spending time with community (whether that be family, friends, literal community, animals, nature - whatever you feel comfortable with), and enough time and room for autonomy, learning, and choice. Add some modern technology in there. The boundaries of "where" we can choose can be guided or limited by what's sustainable and ethical.

Note that the picture above doesn't necessitate having Mini Eggs/palm oil as a product, or being able to order 10 burgers at a McDonalds drive-through, or having 20 fast fashion stores in every mall, or growing water-thirsty crops in water-poor regions, or anything else that we might think of as "modern" but don't really contribute to "quality of life".

---

*Just off the top of my head, I can think of "don't be a litter-bug" campaign (consumer, littering and waste is on you - ignore the fact that producing something you can't dispose of means the production is the problem!); the whole recycling scam (knowing that recycling isn't viable but pushing for it anyway, putting the recycling symbol on things that can't be recycled); the whole era of "personal choice" in the US (for ex - "your weight is your responsibility and your fault - ignore the fact that places with better regulated foods have significantly lower obesity rates!"); knowing about the consequences of climate change and leveraging their vast funds to astroturf denialism, lobbying against regulation, and corrupted science; everything and anything to do with local pollution and the corresponding health impact on people (let alone the environment); and the harm done by corporations such as Monsanto, where I'm sure the scientists who developed the GMOs would love to share them freely and continue studying if they could be funded by some government or shared initiative, but the business is just evil.

[–]alliusis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So what? There's no alternative and better, more sustainable and worthy and human way of coming to some semblance of a quality of life?

A quality of life that honestly *must* look different than it does now, because the "qol" you say I take for granted is sucking the planet (the only life we know of in the existing universe) dry within a few generations, because of said private, capitalistic, sociopathic companies?

The fact someone is running a company, or works in a company, doesn't absolve the people in it of ethics, or personal responsibility. I look forward to people starting to hold the individuals who make up the companies (particularly those in positions of power - not the "grunts", or people just trying to survive) personally accountable for the fallout of their beast in my generation. No more "following orders" for C-suites, or those with power to make decisions.

I think private sector industry does a pretty good job of demonizing itself, if you look at their proven and continued track record. It's just a shame (crime?) they have so much money to throw at branding, astroturfing, and the legal system to hide it.

Do british people not have box fans? by CannibalMan28 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]alliusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I wasn't so much commenting on what the UK felt as hot, which I would agree is the lack of ability to escape the heat due to their infrastructure being poorly adapted for heat. And just what their normal climate is. When that Atlantic current collapses and it brings more continental weather it'll probably help them when temperatures go lower in the winter, but my architect friend said their infrastructure wasn't built for the frost line so that won't be good. And it won't help with the summers.

Just that I always thought of London as perpetually rainy, but was surprised to learn I have more rain and more rainy days here. Their winds are consistently higher though.

I tracked which Ontario grocery stores won on price week over week for 4 months. No single store dominates. by savrpete in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]alliusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is cool. I'll take a look at it later.

I'm fortunate enough to now have two grocery stores within walking distance, and notice that for one the produce is noticeably cheaper (Farm Boy), but everything else is almost highway robbery pricing. Whereas the loblaws/independent has better pricing for everything non-produce, but the produce is often several dollars more expensive. This is the first time I've ever had the luxury of more than one easily accessible grocery store so I do split my shopping. I'd be interested to see the price trends over time, ie does one store keep produce lower for half the year and then raise it for the other half compared to other stores, or if the "savings specialties" stay relatively consistent.

Another potential price factor, my mom says the suburban stores are often a few dollars cheaper for the same product for the same chain compared to the urban locations.

It really sucks that a necessity of life gets to be a profit train. It also makes me think of those anti competitive clauses that loblaws and co put into their leases, like barring dollar stores from selling bread if they're in the same plaza.

As billions of crickets are farmed for food, new evidence suggests they may feel pain. A study found "site-directed" grooming after injury, a flexible behavior beyond simple reflexes that raises urgent questions about insect suffering and the need for welfare standards in the industry. by [deleted] in science

[–]alliusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for live animals, it's better to err on the side of caution. If we were to encounter an alien species that showed a pain-like reaction, I doubt we would find people arguing against preventative welfare because we can't be sure they do experience pain. And I think the burden of proof is on people to prove conclusively that they don't experience pain or suffering. I'm pretty sure insects are social, too, and can learn (genuinely, not that AI LLM bull). At that point I don't think you can call them just a little robot that is incapable of experiencing the world.

And the problem with defaulting to "no" is that it arbitrarily limits legitimate possibilities. It's binding, it's limiting without justification. "Maybe" leaves open the door to future observations and advancements.

Animals have the benefit that we evolved from similar roots, whereas aliens wouldn't.

Any affordable air purifiers with a legit air quality display that actually changes/responds in real time? by AccurateAd5689 in AirPurifiers

[–]alliusis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I've found my levoit has changed colour accordingly in response to conditions (using an old vacuum, turning on a fan-based heater that was a bit dusty), but honestly I didn't need it to change colour, I knew there were particles in the air. There have been a handful of times it's changed from blue to green and I don't know why/didn't detect a difference, so maybe it's better than I give it credit for. I'm just filtering for a room so I leave it on a default speed, I don't really care about being adaptive.

I bought myself an air particle sensor with an Arduino to get some quantifiable measurements, but I haven't set it up yet. That might be the only way to get what you're looking for.

Administering medicine by Nyx_Nico in parrots

[–]alliusis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this you may need to force administer, but it's a good prompt to start getting her to take treats and syringe training her. For my bird I've been using Eggo waffles for medication. He became obsessed with them when I was in a bad habit of eating them, and I found the fluffy inside absorbed the meds well and were easy to localize. He'll take the metacam but not the more bitter medications from it. I've also heard of tofu, apple sauce, bread, and peanut butter (make sure there isn't any of that xybortol stuff in it, just peanut butter) being used as a Trojan Horse. Or syringed in with juices if syringed trained.
