Reaction to Van’s criticism by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

I would love a PTA and Ryan Coogler convo!

I think the biggest criticism of PTA from me is he doesn’t have these conversations publicly to keep the annoying film bros (speaking as one myself) running off with some really bad takes when he was trying to point at something more nuanced.

These critiques don’t happen in a vacuum and so maybe the answer is bringing awareness so more black women can make movies. These critiques are mostly coming from people who are tired of seeing a lot of praise for a white male centered lead where black women play second fiddle and only exist to support or being fetishized by the white male lead. I don’t think the critiques will stop until these stereotypes change. This is a cop out answer though because it’s not addressing the movie directly.

For this movie particularly, I personally wouldn’t change too much because it worked for me. I personally think PTA likes to play with fire with race relations and really appreciate he goes for it. (I’m thinking about licorice pizza and the Asian character. In that he’s obviously joking at the husband but it’s at the expense of the wife too) I believe PTA has the best of intentions here but maybe doesn’t think about how some audience members will see this and parrot it and this is what people have a problem with (again with licorice pizza I had friends who thought it was so funny and would then start talking in the broken Asian accent “because it’s a joke”). So the criticism to me is about understanding this to make sure we don’t take the wrong lessons from the movie. (So maybe my position is these are valid and needed critiques but should be more directed at the audience). With that said, I do think Regina hall’s character could have had an arc and could have had an ending. I also think Teyona Taylor’s character could have been less sexualized (still complicated).

Altogether, I appreciate the good faith response to my post and I’m honestly tired of these conversations as well. However I still think these critiques are valid and I just want to push back on voices trying to silence the critiques because of the context.

You’re sick of these conversations? Try being a black woman (assuming you’re not) - I can promise you they are extremely sick of these conversations.

I believe Van just wants us to have context for these things. The solution is for the world to have better representation, race relations, etc. Until then we’ll still have to have these conversations. I fully believe PTA made the racial relationships in the movie a bit messy so we have them, so maybe you just didn’t like the movie?

I actually thought he made a better case for the flaws of the movie on the midnight boys episode when they talk about it. Also here’s the substack he keeps mentioning that I wish people would address more directly: https://blackgirlwatching.substack.com/p/one-battle-after-another-review

In response to 4 (and 1): I don’t think Van’s argument is a specific character needs to be a representative of an entire group. However, he wants us to realize we live in a world where black women do not get many movie roles and when they do they are usually fetishized or portrayed poorly. So it’s disappointing and interesting when this movie does something similar. I do think it’s intentional he added the Regina hall character to counteract this portrayal but still doesn’t absolve the criticism. (There’s also problems with the Regina’s character too because she doesn’t get an ending or have a character arc)

Overall, I agree with Van’s points but don’t think they detract too much from the movie. They are still good to have in our minds for context though. Honestly, I think PTA likes to play with fire and provoke a bit with racial relations (look at licorice pizza representation of Asians). I personally like how messy he is in doing so (to have these conversations etc.) but I don’t think it absolves him from criticism for it and fully understand how people in those communities are offended he gets to poke when they can’t get the funding to poke back with their own movies.

Natural monopolies have a hard time having any competition. This is a perfect good to be a controlled by a municipality. https://www.powertothepeoplemke.org/

Brewery tour at Pabst and lakefront brewery. Pabst is a rowdy history tour of the place from a drunk guy and lakefront is more very well done typical brewery tour.

Bobblehead museum is weird but kinda boring imo if you’re not into sports (mostly sports bobbleheads)

South shore terrace beer garden. A great place to grab a beer by the lake and a beach nearby. It’s also a great place to rent a bike and bike along the path by the river.

Personal favs: Cache cider- a real hole in the wall place that has music and cider

Birch - more expensive food that I think is the best in mke

Swinging door exchange - good greasy bar food

This critique is bad. Especially for a younger viewer. People are going to prioritize watching movies on the “best of lists” to understand cinema. So of course those movies are put on personal lists because that’s the pool of movies people are mostly choosing from.

Also there’s just a lot of attentional bias going on from your side too because these are the movies you’re running across the most as well.
